Hello . I just got a Springfield GI the WW2 copy with the low profile sights. Ive heard that high standards and other companies gi model cant feed hollow points. So will my Springfield GI be Able to feed them? thank you

every firearm is different. before you go and by a lifetime of any brand of ammo, try them all. You will be surprised on your results

Oh heck yeah - it'll shoot just about any bullet you throw at it. You just might have to adjust the round's OAL so that it's reliable.

I load my own ammo and have successfully shot Gold Dots, XTPs, Golden Sabers, and even SWC's thru my GI model without any issues.

Some Factory ammo "might" give you an issue or two - you just need to experiment a little with different types.

I just went to the range with my son's new Springfield 1911 Micro GI. This is the 3" barrel ultra compact model. I fed it Winchester 180gr hollow points and Speer 180gr Gold Dots. It ate these hollow point bullets like it was starving.

I hope your experience is the same.

If it is any help, Gold Dots feed in everything I've tried them in.
Experimentation will give you an answer, and perhaps next time you should do your research before buying a firearm.

Ya i didn't really care if it fired hollow points or not just bought it cause i wanted a 1911 and it looks awesome also a Springfield. Worse case scenario ill just use my 357 as my carry. From what you guys tell it should be just fine thanks again for the info.

I never got around to shooting HPs through my GI - I didn't have a CCL at the time - but it ran lead SWCs just fine. I know that's a bit of an apples/oranges comparison, but a long-time 1911 shooter at church told me if a gun will run SWCs, it will run durn near anything - "Flying Ashtrays" (HPs with massive cavities) might be an exception.

Golden Sabres and Gold Dots both function fine through MY 2 1911's...A Springfield 4" Champion and 5" GI-45.

Your Mileage Will Vary. Test before betting the bacon on them. Around 1993, shooting Budd bought (IIRC) a Springfield 1911. It ONLY ran with USGI Ball ammo...NOTHING else. A trip back to the factory, and then it ran with anything, including the 185-Gr "Super-Vel" HP's.

The smoothest and best functioning HP rounds through my SA 1911 GI model have been Golden Sabres. 100% reliable. Gold Dots run 100% reliably through my Kimber Pro and probably would also through the SA but haven't tried yet.

It should feed any reasonable shaped hollowpoint. Look for a bullet with a rounded profile (not conical-shaped) and a relatively narrow hollowpoint cavity. The Winchester 185-grain Silvertip, while not the latest or greatest, is a reliable feeder. The newest, highest-tech bullet in the world will do no good if it is hung up on the feed ramp.

Never figured the reason for an HP in a 1911. RN feeds great and, if GI hardball will knock a hash soaked bolo wielding Moro looney on his butt, that's good enough for me.

The RN 45 ACP round was designed by a genius, John Browning, to put large diameter a slow moving bullet into the bad guy with resulting serious knockdown power, tissue damage and big time pain. All those thousands and thousands of dead Moros, Germans, Japanese, Koreans and VC can't be wrong.

again guys thanks for the help i should be going out on Friday or this week end and shooting some ball ammo and some hollow points.

Let us know how it turns out.

I personally would not feel in the least bit bad it the plain RN feeds better and that becomes the carry round. It's a lot cheaper and you can practice much more with the round you carry.

HPs IMO are a solution in search of a problem. I worked 9 years as a VA shrink and talked to many WWII, Korea and VN vets who got effect knock downs from GI ammo out of a 1911 or a 1917 revolver.
