Good old Wally, one of only two men to have survived the full bite of the dreaded Gaboon Viper.
The book by Capstick about Wally DOES mention the 30-30 lion hunting by the Latter. He regularly shot elephants with a 318 Rigby, with good success, so he must have been an incredible shot. I don' remember him ever using anything but a 375 H&H on buffalo.
John Hunter, when he first got to Africa, shot hundreds of lions with a 275 rigby AKA a 7X57 Mauser. But I am getting off topic.
I guess a 30-30 will kill just about any soft skinned game, anywhere, with a good bullet placement. If you read one hundred year old gun ads the thirty thirty was considered more than adequate for anything in North America. And a 35 Remington....why that was the Hammer of THOR!!!
Nowdays, both rounds are considered deer cartridges only. I don't think either has lost any power over the years.
I think the answer lies somewhere in between. But I also think I would not hunt dangerous game with one.
