a really neat trick posted by yellowhammer on edcforums.com

for knives with a thumbhole, you can make your own "Wave" feature (ala Emerson) by attaching a zip tie to the hole, then trimming it down as much as possible. the raised part should be faced outward, ie in your right pocket for a right hand draw, clip it so the square part would be on the outside right of your pocket (unlike the picture below, which is opposite and he said he flipped it around)

another member verified that it works like a charm.

I've gotten it to work OK with a delica, it works really well with a Spyderco Karambit (I have a Endura-4 wave, and the karambit actually works better than the Endura, probably because the blade doesn't need to open as far), I can't get it to work with a Yojimbo- the blade shape is very different than the endura/delica knives.

my 'ghetto'd ' kerambit:

Why do anything "ghetto"?

Just pay the $60 for a waved Endura, or pay more for a nice Emerson or P'Kal. They're good knives worth the money. The "ghetto" wave is just that, ghetto, and it only works sometimes (in my experience).

Next we'll have THR guys shooting thier pistols sideways...

cracked butt,

Be very careful with zip tying the Karambit. Most people discourage it, due to the sever angle of the blade, and it's length. Many a pocket has suffered it's wrath, and some thighs.

I've zip tied the Yojimbo, and while it doesn't work like zip tying the Delica, it can be done.

All I saw on the main page is The "Ghetto Wave" and for a second I thought this was a thread on gang signs.

Not a bad idea IMO. I've got a cheap folder that I lost the thumb assist for, I'm now looking for zip ties in my tool bag.

I've done the zip-tie-wave and have carried that way for about 18 months. It really is not quite the real thing. No matter how tight I connected the zip tie(s), it would invariably end up rotating around. It is definitely not as reliable as a real wave. it's not that big of a deal on a utility knife but if you use that knife for self defense...

When I read the title of this thread, I thought you were referring to dremeling the tip-up spyderco knives to make a ghetto metal wave. In fact, I literally finished removing the top half of the blade on a spyderco matriarch. It waves every time. Last week, I did a small benchmade griptilian. If you own a dremel and the metal cutting wheel, it costs just as little as a zip-tie.

The only problem with the factory waved endura and delica is they are really thin blades. I'm sure that ernie emerson will not allow spyderco to wave something beefy like the manix, and so we'll likely never see it. :(

I thought the "Ghetto Wave" was a fixture of inner city ballparks.

I only use that setup when carrying it in jeans pockets where the blade doesn't have room to move, when I put it in a cargo pants pocket, the ziptie get removed.

The only problem I have with the waved endura is that its almost impossible to remove from my pocket if I'm seated, such as in a car. The metal wave protrusion grabs the fabric of my pocket and locks the knife into place, so there is some applications where a 'ghetto' wave might be more desirable than the real thing.

The wave is a hook that catches on the inside of your pocket and opens the knife when its withdrawn from a pocket.
