Man dies outside apartment in shootout with robbers

Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Houston police are investigating a fatal shooting of a man in a robbery attempt outside his home just after 11 p.m.Saturday.

The victim, Reyes R. Anzora, 28, of 10300 Wilcrest, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Two men approached Anzora's brother-in-law who was walking toward Anzora's apartment when two men chased him, put a gun to his head and demanded his wallet, police reported.

Anzora opened the front door and tried to defend his brother-in-law with a revolver, shooting one time toward the suspects, police said. They returned fire, hitting Anzora in the chest.

The two suspects fled northbound on Wilcrest, driving a sky blue 1990-1992 four-door Toyota Camry with dark tinted windows.

Anyone with information may contact the Houston Police Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

I bet he didn't know how to use that gun too well if at all.

I wish we knew more about the physical environment, it would help give a better understanding of angles of fire and such. That's a tough situation though, with the BGs holding a pistol to a loved one's head. In that situation I'd pray that my practice would pay off with an accurate shot. Sounds like this guy missed...wonder how much he practiced?

A noble effort on the dead guy's part, too bad the hoodlums won :(

I am sorry for the two victims. Hope the police catch the BG's.

Hate to Sunday night quarterback but you have to use cover if it is available and it should have been if he was shooting from a doorway. He should have leaned out just enough to aim and fire. Realistic training is very important.

Being armed and willing to fight to protect yourself or your family is only part of the equation. Learning how and when to fight is crucial for anyone who goes armed.

Sh*t happens.

Having a gun does not guarantee one's life.

When someone has a gun to your head is not a good time to start shooting. The BGs had every advantage. I doubt if anyone could have produced a better outcome by firing.

In this case, I think the brother in law should have just given up his wallet.

Of course, the brother in law probably didn't have much say in Mr. Anzora's decision to shoot.

And even then there's no guarantee of success and/or survival.

In most every gun fight, someone's gotta lose.

Damn well said.
Then there is Murphy's law.....someone's gotta win the gunfight.

Sorry the good guys lost this one. :fire:

In the place we lived in in TX the front door was pointed straight into the carport and neither side of the entrance hallway had anything to use as cover. Sometimes you just don't have that option. In our case if you were going to go to cover first you'd either be firing into the fence for the front yard or have to stand about 5 yards farther away and shoot inside a small hallway :what: . That'd wake you up.

The way most modern homes are built, I kinda doubt that much of anything short of a major appliance would provide you with actual cover. :cuss:
