Looks like just the thing if you need to light a campfire and you're all out of matches.

Also: is that an upper sideplate screw? Do all the X-frames have those?

Hi there,

It kind of looks like a "The Man from UNCLE" revolver!

I wonder if you can buy one without the "blast deflector" on the muzzle.

I guess that are trying to keep up with Ruger's shortened version of their "Alaskan".

What's the weight? And does it require that thing on the end of the barrel be present to use it? It looks like a nice handgun.

59+ ounces. That's over a lb. heavier than my .454 woods gun. I'm into minimum weight on my hip, this one is too heavy for me.

Looks like a good marketing move to me!

Ruger recently came out with its "Alaskan" which is a 454/45 "snubby" marketed as a "bear stopper" and, although Ruger has not produced a lot of them, sales have been brisk.

If you read comments made by us gunnies about the Alaskan many say that they would buy one if it had a longer barrel (3" or 4") and that is just what S&W has come out with in the its 460 "snubby". Plus, it can utilize three different rounds i.e. 460/454/45. I see it as the perfect combination gun for bear stopping, concealed carry, and cowboy shooting. Who could want more?:neener:

Not nearly as good looking as Ruger's Alaskan, which is also more than 1 lb lighter. (Have Ruger & S&W switched brains?)

The whole vibe of a .460 XVR snubby seems wrong -- the .460's market niche was supposed to be a rifle-like, high-speed, long-range hunting round, whereas the .500 S&W Mag. was the heavy slammer.

Other than the prospect of using cheap .45 Colt ammo (and there are lots of lighter, more affordable short-barreled revolvers available for that) I don't see why a S&W fan would choose this gun over the .500 Mag snubby, especially now that .500 Special ammo is available. The .500 is your Smith bear stomper.

460 snubbie is LARGER than it looks online

The picture misleads its size. the reason it's so heavy is because it's built on the same frame as the 500 and larger 460 revolvers, just with a shortened barrel. go to the gun store, look at any one of them with the frame, and then visualize the 3inches more; it'll be quite larger than the ruger alaskan. I stlil want one though, with the 500 4" as well. sweeeeet!

Ugly and Ackward

Smith and Wesson has become so over-rated that they can develope and sell heinous looking firearms everbody talks constantly about. The short barreled 500 and this stupid looking short 460. Come on...

MrBigStuff, Nobody is forcing you to buy one. If you don't like them, fine. But some of us do. Just like girls, some like redheads some like blonds, it is all personal choice. But thank you for your feed back. I will take that it into consideration next time I am shooting my 4 inch 500 Mag. (Not):neener:

Well, now that the 5" version has come --- I think I'll shift over to it.
