Well a certain unnamed devious board member :neener: (who'll probably comment shortly) has introduced a hankerin for a .22 pistol , having a new game to be played which puts a revolver guy like me and my 617 at a disadvantage. I've owned a Ruger Mark II 6 7/8" bull bbl. some years back , and while a decent gun , didn't much care for the mag release (heel type) or the razor sharp undercut front site , needed a leather holster with a sight track built in for any hope of a draw.

I know things have changed over the years and there have been many new models including a MarkIII version of the Ruger with a button mag release, sooo what do you have and how do you like it ?? Function , accuracy etc.. , 22/45 ? S&W / Walther ?

Can probably swing anything short of an S&W mod 41 , thats gettin out of my range for this niche in my collection.

A fellow I shoot with just brought a Browning Buck Mark. From what I've seen of it, it's a much better design than the Ruger Mark II I bought a year and several months ago, which has been a complete waste of money.

I have lots of .22 pistols, but my preference in a full size model is the Browning Buck Mark. Grip angle and controls are similar to the venerable USGI 1911A1.

The MOST FUN .22 I've shot is my 1911 with the .22 Marvel Conversion.

1911 platform
accurate and reliable (with cci minimags)
regular mag release
familiar functions
and jus' looks damn good (compared to a ruger! *ducks and hides*) :neener:

oh did i mention 1911 platform? :D

Look at the Walther P22 as well. I recently obtained a couple of these for use in training new shooters. It's a smaller, more compact gun than the Ruger or Browning, but plenty accurate, and after several hundred rounds apiece through mine, it's clear that the early magazine/feeding troubles in this model have been dealt with quite satisfactorily.

Buying a Buckmark was one of the best decisions I've made and my overall shooting has improved for it. I agree, the grip size and angle; plus the trigger reach; are similar to the 1911 and practise time on the Buck leads to improvement on the 1911's.

I can shoot 500 rounds on the Buck for less than 50 on the Kimber and then switch to the Kimber or Springer when I'm warmed up.

I should mention that the Browning is simple to take down for cleaning and maintenance too.

I am totally pleased with my Buck Mark.

Its most noteworthy feature, particularly in this day and age, is a trigger sweet enough to pour over peach ice cream.

It is highly accurate and, after a brief break-in period, has been 100% reliable for 1000+ rounds with a single cleaning.

I also prefer the Buck Mark's looks to the Ruger Mk II/III and S&W rimfire pistols (as well as the Neos rimfire phaser ;)), but that is an individual factor.

Heck Ray!!! Browning has got this about sewn up - so far!!! Well, I have to say I have yet to try one and so am not on firm ground to comment on the Buckmark.

My 22/45 is great for feel etc - only prob was that cycling I mentioned to you - whereby now and again it won't fully eject and empty gets caught up right beside new round - on inside! I got the Volquartson special extractor - which I hope to fit this week ... then we'll see. Several guys there have Rugers and seem well happy with them but other types too - just can't think of what they all are.

Maybe have to look into Buckmark myself - with all this good press goin on!!!

Think I mentioned - this week's bowling pin is off - whilst they finish new lighting but hopefully next week on Wednesday we might be go - hope so and that I can make it over, and you too perhaps.

Later

Gee Chris isn't that .22 a bit "anemic" for your taste. :p

Try some of the finest grit of Scotch-Brite [tm] on the chamber only. Maybe follow up with Semichrome by Happich [tm] and on the feed ramp. See if that 22/45 won't run.

Oh...Win X22lr ammo. ;)

Steve ... anemic?? haha well - guess it don't quite fit in with the hand cannons! LOL But hey - read my sig line re .22's!

I will probably do a bit of polish on the relevant areas when I take it down to do the extractor - and hopefully things will run better. I got the impression from the other guys at the club that they mostly went for this extractor mod with Rugers ... so am hoping it'll be a fix.

A point re MkII's etc and my 22/45 ... the one thing re the 22/45 is the controls are sorta ''1911'' ish .. and so a tad more ergonomic I find ... tho the slide lock button has wicked sharp edges!

Browning Buckmark.
I think brand new mine was like 350.
And it's got a SWEEEET :D trigger, plus it's got a natural fall to the hand feel and it just looks good. (rugers might be indestructable, but looks ain't high on their list. life's too short to own ugly guns. )
Or, if going for real class, go Colt Woodsmen.
I want one of them real real bad.

Hey Chris I tried to email you in regard to your 22/45, I never had a problem with the ones I had ...I guess with that "high dollar" satellite and "puter...an email from a poor Southern Boy using dial up ISP can't get through. :p

BozemanMT,
Dang first I hear you are shooting skeet, now I read where you shoot Buckmarks...and consider the Colt Woodsman a great gun as well...Allright in my book...well we need to talk about a * ahem* certain mutual friend...umm...Sandy makes the Salsa, what do we need Larry for? :D

Ruger 22/45. 4in barrell, I can shoot mine (cheap) and the old man can shoot the 1911 I got him....great father-son bonding (when it happens) :scrutiny:

Had it for 4 months put about 5000 rnds down the tube, I think I've had about 5 maybe 6 failures to extract. Only problem is loading the mags but the callouses are starting to form. (got one of them "ultimate mag loaders" on the xmas list) :D

SM,
if it goes "bang" or burns gas, I like it.
We need Larry cuz ............................
Well, now I"m not sure.
larry? ;)

I have a Ruger MkII Competition model and it is a great gun. When I first got it it was a jammo-matic and I called Ruger and they sent me a new bolt assy. That fixed any and all jambs, it runs like a top. I have a Leupold 2x scope on mine and I can get 4" groups on a good day at 100yds.

If you aren't willing to spend the money for a Smith 41 and want a decent general purpose target and hunting pistol that makes a great plinker too your options are, the Browning Buckmark line.
The Ruger MK2, Mk3, 22/45 pistols or the Sig Trailside line.
Pick the one that feels the best and doesn't scare your wallet, they are all good gun designs and all will serve you well.
Ruger spare magazines will cost you the least amount of money.

Hey Steve ... email prob? Hmmmm . was that using my old addy or new? Your last email, the long one .... came thru fine but the reply I made to that had my new one as a reply addy. Could be if sent to old, the spam deal has picked it up - I may find it when I go check.

S&W 317 kit gun

its super light, and a FUN gun to shoot.
I buy the 22lr value packs at WALMART, 550 rounds for under $9.00
In a year I have close to 4000 rounds out of it.
Its cleans up well, looks brand new.
