During the video taped interview by cops at the scene which was shown at the trial and televised, George Zimmerman says his firearm was loaded with 9MM hollow point projectiles.

The autopsy report shows that the bullet fragmented into at least two pieces.

Apparently, the hollow point round was effective, but Trevon replied after he was shot, "OK - you got me." So, according to George, Trevon lived for a time after the direct shot to the heart at near point blank range.

Based on this, I am assuming that the 9mm is the very smallest round I would consider carrying for self defense. I'm not real comfortable with 9MM but these guns tend to be small enough for pocket carry.

Frankly, the 40S&W is a much better choice.

Expecting instantaneous death from a gunshot is unrealistic. A hollywood myth. Even a shot that penetrates the heart does not instantly kill.

Handgun rounds may be effective at stopping an attack, but even a very good hit doesn't necessarily turn the lights out right away.

All knowledgeable trainers teach that when one must shoot, one must shoot until the threat stops attacking. The old saw about "with a .45 you only need one shot" (or similar statements) is just so much repeated ignorance.

With that, I'm going to close this one. We aren't going down the Zimmerman-Martin road, and we have had HUNDREDS of threads on 9mm-vs.-.40-vs.-.45 and similar caliber wars.
