Trying to decide on a Pre-Election Rifle

My pre-election rifle is a DPMS LR-304 AP4. I chose a 308 in a smaller barrel size so I could at least have a decent handling rifle with fairly good range and power. I did get an EBR because of the upcoming election. I just have no faith with Republicans now introducing the insane AWB.

Ok, I've decided that I'm either going to get the Romanian Ak for $350 or snatch up the WASR they had for $425. The WASR seems a little more solid, has a large muzzle brake, and a folding stock.

What other differences should I know about?

Be sure to invest in magazines. I don't know if you were buying guns during the ban but magazines were alot more expensive then particulatly handgun magazines.
Strangely the AK mags were cheap back then but I would definitely make sure to stock up on plent of mags in the case standard magazines are permanently banned.

Was going to build another AR--dealer had a new stainless Mini-14 marked off $50 down to $599---since I have a bunch of factory hi-caps already---I put it on lay-a-way.

Folks, if we do get another AWB, there are likely to be some significant differences between the new one and the old one.

I don't think that buying lowers with the intention of buying uppers and parts kits later is a good idea. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they add provisions that prohibit buying uppers and such. Remember the ATF barrel ban of what, '05?

I also doubt that they will allow selling or buying high cap magazines. We may not even get magazines over 5 rounds.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with Cali style laws, at a minimum.

The rifles grandfathered in, if we even have that, could not be sold or passed down in the family.

I'd rather buy one or two complete, working rifles, and a pile of good magazines and ammo, and spare parts, rather than buying 5 or 6 lowers and hoping later to buy spare parts kits...

I fear we may soon be wishing for the good ol' days of AWB 1, where all we had to do was omit the flashhider and bayonet lug, or throw on a silly thumbhole stock...

Any solid AR platform in .223. Magazines are cheap and readily available and ammo is about a ubiquitous as it gets for a centerfire rifle.

I bought a few ar lowers, they run about 130 if you don't price shop. You will always be able to get the parts but might not be able to get the lower. Last time a bought a rifle had had them add on an ar lower so I would not have to pay for another background check.

A WASR is Romanian, just a cheaper, less-than-mil-spec Romanian. The "good" Romanians are the "G models". I'd be willing to bet that your $350 Romanian is a WASR, too.
Still, if they check out, you might outa grab them BOTH !! :D

I am unfamiliar with alot of this, does this mean what I think it means. I could get the lower now and build it later. I already have a RRA entry tactical w/ Eotech sights and Surefire M500A, but I would like eventually set up another for long range, maybe even in .308, but I was really leaning towards something in Remington 700 next, just afraid I won't have the opportunity for the former if things go south.

And YES I DO VOTE, but look around you!

Just got mine, CZ550 Safari Classic in 375 H&H.

Schweetness - pics, pics!

How, Just took some pic but when I try to upload attachment from computer iit says file size too large.

What I'm Buying

I have most of the older military style rifles already in my collection. I think I am going to buy an Alexander Arms Grendel 6.5mm before the commies take over in January. It may run you a little more than $1000 depending on who you get it from but I think it's well worth it.

The performance of that gun and that particular round surpasses the 5.56 NATO and the 6.8 SPC by far in my opinion. :uhoh:

I've shot a couple of these and you just can't beat them. It can hit better than most folks can shoot.

My 2 cents

Molon Labe,
Joe

That rocks, jking! ('cept for the tablecloth) :)

Well, I'd have to say that before I pop a Cialis when me and the Missus are plannin a romp, I like to shoot a nice .50 cal muzzleloader to get my adrenaline going - oh wait, you said pre-e-LECT-ion rifle.....nevermind.

Pre-Election as in possible gun control?

If, you are thinking that one of the candidates might possibly make the last country on earth where law abiding citizens can legally own and carry firearms like Canada, you should keep in mind New Orleans after Katrina, as in gun seizure. And if you think they wont FORCIBLY take it from you, keep in mind Waco.

The only firearm that might be left in the hands of the living if the A-C takes over could be the black powder non-cartridge guns. So, get one of those, lots of primers if you don't have flintlocks, lots of powder, and either lots of bullets, or lead and casting equipment. Don't forget the musket pistol. Perhaps a blunderbuss.

We need to focus on congressional races etc. Either candidate will sign any gun-control measures that cross his desk. Neither one is a champion of fourth amendment rights. So don't make "guns" the litmus test - both fail.

Sleepingdog,

I might be out of the loop but I havent heard of anyone, Republican or Democrat, being accused of unresonable search or seizure. Can someone just assuage me and tell me you are talking about the Second Amendment? :scrutiny:

Whatever you decide on, make sure you can mount a bayonnet on it - one never knows what might happen once they get the stupid "assault rifle ban" passed again you might need it to repel a "drive-by bayonnetting" :what: :D

I'd like to spend around $600, but am willing to go to $1000. I'm open to anything that's relatively light, can mount a red dot scope, and has a 20+ round magazine.

first get that AK for $350 then get a AR lower for about $100 and a Del-ton kit for $465 that'll keep you under $1,000. and you have both rifles.

or you can get 3 other rifles...

Saiga .223 = $320
Saiga 7.62x39 = $300
Saiga .308 = $450

Considering the underlying principle motivating the purchase, get an AR15. I'm reminded of a former co-worker who objected to only conservatives displaying American flags in their cubes - so he, being far from conservative, chose to display a ... hammer-and-sickle flag.

keep in mind Waco.
Keep in mind that nothing like Waco happened again for 15+ years. The feds kept Waco in mind too.

If you have a 1000.00 budget. I would get an ar15 pistol, then later on you can always put a 16' upper and stock on and have 2 ar's. If a ban does become a real issue, you now have one very sought after pistol/rifle ($$$$investment). When putting a full lenght upper on, you have to do the stock at the same time, never put stock on short barrel config. or buffer tube on long config.

If you already have a decent rifle or two, I'd consider buying ammo.

It's the next thing the anti-gun folks are going to attack, hard.

I have faith that Heller and subsequent court actions will eventually prevail, but it may take years for acceptance of guns (and ammunition) as a basic civil right. Meanwhile, the busy little beavers will keep chewing away at whatever they can get their teeth into.

Not to encourage hoarding, just planning for scarcity.

Watch the politics, folks, don't want to stray into that and get this thread locked.

Take politics to APS if you want to discuss them...
