Finally took my model 12 to try out trap for the first time, after high power. Took me the first round of five to figure out I was loading the shotgun wrong, firing on an empty chamber and having to pump it again to load the shell while everyone was waiting, made for a very flustered first round. But once I got that sorted out and started busting some clays I had a ton of fun. Loved blasting those birds into itty bitty pieces, I think I'm hooked. Ended up hitting 14/25. Now I need a new shotgun so I can shoot steel shot 5 minutes away from my house instead of driving 50 minutes.

Welcome to the wonderful world of clays. Busting clays is instant gratification. A couple things...

With pump guns, just drop in a round and close it up. I see so many folks trying to finagle the round into the chamber. With all pumps I know of, dropping the round in the port and closing it up is all we need to do. The round will feed.

You know not to use your 12 with steel. Good. There's a world of steel friendly shotguns out there, save this one for lead, bismuth and what ever soft nontox shot comes along.

Besides a new shotgun, you need a few things. You already have eye and ear protection, get a belt and pouch or vest to carry ammo and some basic tools.

My pouch holds a choke tube wrench, range tickets, gloves, a pencil, a dead AA battery for blooper rounds, a few extra rounds as well as a box or two of ammo.

HTH....

Hey chickenfried, now all you need to do is try out a 28ga shotgun. :D

I figured I'd say it before sm comes along. ;)

Probably does not come as a surprise that I have in fact rec'd quite a few PMs , Emails with 28 ga being the subject. I have been both Cursed and Praised - kinda depends if it was the one buying it , or the one using it. :D

chickenfried - Congrats on a great gun , that Model 12 is one fine gun. You are doing fine , just keep at it, and if get a chance get some lessons, and find an old Publication by Fred Misseldine " Score Better at Trap". try www.abebooks.com

Non-toxic for clay OR does it have to be Steel. Reason I ask if you were to take up reloading, and reloaded Bismuth, that would work in that Model 12 - have to pattern and all..still..

Then again wouldn't hurt to have a 870 for a knock around, do all gun when you don't want to shoot the Model 12. Will handle steel shot, options of chokes, and 'similar' manual of arms to the M12.

Then again, I do subscribe to Redundancy , don't mean one of these cannot be a 28 ga. I mean a 870 in 12, works just like one in 20 and 28 and .410...

Then again I have also said "collect the whole set".

humm...rec'd some interesting PMs and emails about that too come to think about it... :D

I'm really torn right now. On one hand I think next time Big 5 has the 870 express on sale I'm grabbing one. But I do like nice wood and deep blueing, so a wingmaster is also on the brain. Then there's the whole affordable o/u or sxs to catch my eye. Decisions.......Decisions.........Boy is life hard :)

My $0.02 worth: if you want a Remington, it's worth taking the extra time, and paying the extra money, to locate a good-condition used Wingmaster rather than buy an Express. I've gradually replaced all my Expresses with Wingmasters, and now have only one Express left, an 20ga. Youth model. The fit, finish, and quality of internal parts of the Wingmasters is just superior, period.

Around here, one can find used WMs for about the same price as new Expresses or less. Even if one has to swap out a barrel to get choke tubes, it's not expensive.

I like older WMs, as is obvious. The Expresses, however, are darn good shotguns.

Guess what just went on sale at Big 5? But I think I'm going to hold out for a used or new wingmaster. Any idea of how to decipher remington serial numbers for date of manufacture, and after what date were the WM's rated for steel shot? Thanks for the suggestions guys.

NO need to decipher numbers or barrel codes, fried. 800-243-9700 is Remington's CS line. Give them the serial number and they will tell you what year it was made.

If it has choke tubes, it's steel capable.
