I'm an american Citizen currently Living in the UK and I'm planning to move back to the US by sometime around the end of next year.

I am currently looking at moving to either Oregon or Idaho at the moment and I also plan on getting a gun as soon as I can.

But I can't find much on current up to date laws on guns and bladed weapons (I collect Knifes and Swords).
sofar the most ricent I can find is the 2002 laws on the NRA's site, and I was wondering if there was a place with more up to date info that dosn't require 2 weeks of reading and a law degree to understand...

As for what kinds of guns I am considering getting (not including the Licances or Permits to have them).
Also as I am reativly new to the ban and pre-ban stuff (moved here in 95) any info on what states it covers (if not all) and any other possably usefull info would be appriciated.

a 45 or 50 cal Simi Auto (Probably a HK or Magnum (Pre-Ban Normal Magazines))
M16A1 (coustom self built hybryid full auto w/ pre-ban mags)
Grizzly Big Bore 50BGM Single Shot or a PSG-1 (if I can find a good deal on one)

Any info on Legalatys regarding such weapons in those states will be Very usefull...

-Thanks:)

Ditto on packing.org. Oregon politics are greatly influenced by the liberal population mass in and around Portland. To my knowledge, idaho does not suffer from a similar large liberal population mass.

Zedicus, Idaho is a very, very gun Rights friendly State. You wanna buy a machine gun or two and shoot 'em?? Legal here. CCW Shall Issue. Take a gun safety course, and the applicaation is, I think, $40. It was a few years ago when my wife got her CCW. Took her four weeks, IIRC.

Pistols? Whatever you want. Rifles and shotguns, same. Open carry of handguns is legal.

Buy whatever ammo you want. Private party sales and trades are not restricted, and you don't have to go crawling on your hands and knees to beg Big Brother and Big Nanny for permission to save your own life if some cretin attacks you.

If you're a hunter, there's great hunting here. Fishing? Some of the best. Fantastic outdoor sports. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States.

Come on over: the living's fine.

J.B.

Idaho Sounds good sofar:)

What about Laws Regarding Carrying (Concealed or Otherwise) of Knifes and Swords?

I collect Knifes and Swords, and carrying a 3' Katana or other silmmalar sized bladed weapon tends to freak out Police a little I am told...

over here in the UK it's more or less illegal to go beyond your front door with any bladed weapon of any size, and when I lived in Callifonia the Limit for a non Folding Hunting Knife was 6 1/2" blade unconsealed & 3 1/2" for a folding Pocket knife...

I have other Off Topic Questions about Idaho, but I think I'll wait an drop you a PM or e-mail about those...

Though Idaho is a more "conservative" state, it is not neccesarily the most gun friendly state. Getting a Class 3 signoff in Multnomah County is ok now, since the new sheriff told Vera Katz to "f off" in regards to class 3 sign offs.

In actuality, Oregon has less gun laws affecting CHL holders than Idaho does. With a CHL, open carry is legal everywhere except for federally prohibited areas (post office, court, federal buildings) and state courthouses, and that's it.

Also, it's easier to live in Oregon than it is in Idaho in terms of getting carry permits. As a resident, an Oregon CHL is SHALL ISSUE. If you live in Idaho, an Oregon CHL is may issue. Idaho recognizes all out of state permits.

Liberal does not neccesarily mean anti-gun here in Oregon. They've tried many times to put schools in as prohibited areas, with no success. Oregon has it's Schumers and Feinsteins, but most of the Democrats here won't listen to them, because outside of Portland and Multnomah county, very pro-gun, and very moderate to conservative.

Idaho is an Open Carry State. This means that you don't need any kind of permit to openly carry a handgun. Additionally, you only need a CWP (concealed weapons permit) if you are traveling/residing in an incorporated city, logging camp, mining camp or railroad camp. All other areas - feel free to conceal, on your person or in your vehicle.

While traveling, simply put your weapon on the dashboard (loaded or otherwise) if you don't have a permit and travel through one of the afore mentioned areas.

Idaho is a Shall Issue State. The requirements for training are minimal and if the sheriff decides you need such, then you get to choose the method of proof of training. In most of the counties, your DD214 will suffice as proof of training. As will your Hunter Education course or just about any NRA approved gun safety course. Some sheriffs don't even require that you show proof of having had formal training. If you are less than 21 years of age and can show some need (your job?), you can get a special permit to carry concealed.

I understand that in Ada County (Boise) and in Blaine County (Sun Valley - Hollyweird North) the sheriffs require a specific course. Most residents comply as they simply don't know Idaho law - Which states that should the sheriff require proof of gun handling/safety, it is you who gets to select the type of proof. The statute even lists several types of acceptable proof. Should the sheriff not accept your "proof," you have legal recourse against them. All in the statutes.

You can carry anywhere in the state except in courts and detention facilities or on school grounds. There is an exception to schools. Dropping off or picking up your kids? Legal to carry. Need to have access to the buildings? Ask the School Board for a "hall pass." :D

I don't know of any sheriff that has declined to sign off on a Title II weapon. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, just have never heard of it happening. Most sheriffs will sign off as long as you let them fire it a bit! :what:

Idaho recognizes all other States' permits, however, the permit must be in your possesion. You are not required to tell an officer that you are armed or even have a permit, should you encounter a traffic stop.

In view of this, please tell me how Oregon is better, Lonnie?

If you want to nitpick and get into specifics....

You can carry into the schools without their permission. The law specifically exempts CHL holders from the prohibition on carry in schools. You do not need a hall pass, or anything else for that matter. That is much better than accidently ending up on school grounds to play baseball practice with your kid.

I'm also thinking tactics in terms of positioning yourself for a CHL in Oregon. Non-resident permits are on a may-issue basis for contigious non-residents.

Oregon is a class 3 state, too.

Nit pick? Lonnie, you took one paragraph to nit pick...and some of us are working on that particular "problem."

Can you carry openly most anywhere in Oregon without a permit, as you can in Idaho?

Can you carry concealed without a permit in Oregon, as you can in Idaho?

What are the training requirements in Oregon? Look, I'm all for us civilians getting training, but I don't believe it necessary in order to exercise a right. Idaho's requirements are at best, minimal. I'd much prefer something along the lines of Vermont or Alaska....wouldn't we all?
