Gun Control Ad Highlights Jews on NRA 'Blacklist'

Gun Control Ad Highlights Jews on NRA 'Blacklist'
By ERIC MARX
FORWARD CORRESPONDENT
In their latest campaign against the National Rifle Association, gun-control groups are highlighting the names of Jewish organizations and individuals found on an NRA-compiled "blacklist," in what observers say is an effort to spur one of the gun-control lobby's key constituencies to action.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence-Million Mom March bought advertisements in The New York Times and other publications last week inviting gun-control advocates to "join the honor roll at www.NRAblacklist.com."

The NRA's register of those it considers enemies contains the names of many different organizations and individuals, including tennis commentator John McEnroe, newsman Walter Cronkite and rock star Bruce Springsteen. Yet fully a fifth of the names cited in a list of 35 featured in the Brady Campaign-Million Mom March ad belonged to Jewish organizations or individuals.

"They were consciously or unconsciously acknowledging that American Jews are an important demographic in the universe of domestic social policy and social organizing," said David Twersky, a spokesman for the American Jewish Congress.

The AJCongress appears on the NRA "blacklist" and in the Brady ad along with Hadassah, former New York City mayor Ed Koch, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, actor Billy Crystal and comedian Mel Brooks.

The advertising campaign is being waged amid a fierce battle to influence legislation pending in Congress that would sunset the assault-weapons ban and provide civil immunity to gun dealers, manufacturers and distributors.

A spokesman for The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Rob Wilcox, said Jewish groups such as the AJCongress and Hadassah were chosen for inclusion in the ad because they represent the American mainstream.

"It's the same way we picked the NAACP instead of the Black Panthers," said Wilcox, explaining the selection of Hadassah and AJCongress. "We wanted to use highly recognizable names that clearly explained the widespread attack on every aspect of society."

Jewish groups that are on the NRA "blacklist" but are not cited in the Brady ad include the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, B'nai B'rith, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the Jewish Labor Committee, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

Five religious leaders are singled out by the NRA, including Rabbi David Saperstein, the chief lobbyist for the Reform movement; Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Rabbi Paul Menitoff, executive vice president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

No bodies of the Conservative movement make the NRA list, despite that movement's pro-gun control positions.

Menitoff said he didn't understand the point of publicly labeling one's enemies.

"I don't know of any self-respecting organization that creates a blacklist," he said. "It's beyond the pale. It has no effect on our stance as an organization, and I can't believe it would have any effect on any other credible organization."

You can make up a pretty long list of Jews who are supporters of the Second Amendment and freedom in general. Maybe Horowitz or Gorin (jewishworldreview)will come forward and make Sarah Brady look like F---o the Clown.

They could do it with one hand tied behind their back.

"I don't know of any self-respecting organization that creates a blacklist,"

Of course you don't. Leftist groups (see PETA, NAACP, Rainbow/Push, etc) do it all the time. Heck, the NAACP put an entire state on its blacklist. Of course, when they do it, it's a "boycott" not a blacklist.

Or maybe these groups all just lack self respect, and that's why they're all so angry at the world. Any pshrinks want to psycho-analyze them?

I'm Jewish and an NRA member and see no conflict. The groups were singled out because as groups they have vocally supported anti-gun policies. They were NOT selected because of religious affiliation or skin tones.

By the way, I wish every American Jew would read the postings on UseNet. The hatemongering bigots ought to be enough to turn any anti-gun Jew around 180 degrees. I don't think it is insignificant the last time a white supremacist decided to go and kill Jews, he selected California, a state in which he could be certain none of his targets would be armed and able to shoot back (Buford Farrow, 1999).

The best --- in fact, the only -- reasonable response to hatemongers, racists, and bigots is to speak softly ... and carry.

Hmmm. I bet JPFO is not on that list.

Let me ask a question: what do all those Jews on the NRA blacklist have in common? Answer: they're all very liberal. IOW, being Jewish has nothing to do with it. I would also say that they haven't been reading their OT very closely or they wouldn't adopt their anti-Jewish, anti-Christian gun-control position.

Bill Clinton - big Jew for control?
Sarah Brady - big Jew for gun control?
George Bush - quits the NRA - big Jew for gun control?

Given the racist trash at the gun show, I wouldn't blame Jews for not thinking gun rights are worth squat.

Neither Sarah Brady nor others of her ilk, including "Jewish Organizations" ever spoke for this Jew, who has been a Life Member of NRA since the mid 1970's, despite questions concerning exactly what the hell NRA is sometimes up to.

Countless Jewish people could stand up and support the NRA publicly, as many do. But somehow I doubt the press would give it much attention. It'd take away from their ability to play up the NRA as a bunch of white racists.

I, too, am a pro-gun Jew. I'll come right out and state that any Jew on the NRA's list belongs there, not because they are Jews, but by virtue of being anti-gun . I'll bet anyone big bucks that no pro-gun Jews (or Christians, Moslems, Buddists, Martians, etc.) appear on that list. Appearance on the list depends on your stance on guns, nothing more and nothing less.

IT IS DESPICABLE THAT ANYONE WOULD POINT OUT THE RELIGION OF ANY PERSON APPEARING ON A LIST THAT, ON ITS FACE, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RELIGION. Since The Forward is notoriously liberal, the term "despicable" easily applies in most cases, and certainly does here. Religion has nothing to do with one's stance on issues related to liberty - unless, that is, you are a liberal and it can be used for political gain.

I suppose that, according to the paranoid anti-Semitic fantasies of the idiot liberals at The Forward, the following people must be crypto-Jews: Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Janet Reno, Ted Kennedy, Sarah Brady, Andrew McKelvey, Rosie O'Donnell, Mel Gibson, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, John Kerry, Dick Durbin, that irritating McCarthy broad from Longgggeyeland, Michael Moore, most of the California, Maryland, New Jersey, British and Australian governments, etc., etc.

This Jew is NEVER going to give up his weapons until he's dead. I've simply got too many dead relatives in Europe from 2 generations ago that testify to the powerlessness of an unarmed Jew. The fact that my wife's uncle (an uninvited guest at 4 of Herr Hitler's lovely camping facilities and a witness to the murder of his father and brother) carries a gun constantly and owns a machine gun, merely reinforces my determination. Anyone who attempts to disarm me will be, in light of history, viewed as attempting to kill me and will be treated accordingly. If the liberal Jews, or anyone else, doesn't like that - well, F'em.

This guy is such a panty wetter! Please! The ADL, SPLC and a ton of other Jewish groups make up enemies lists all the time. I guess it's OK when it's a liberal group, but not OK when it's the NRA?

I was born Jewish and I'm ashamed that this idiot speaks for anyone Jewish!

Grr. you guys are so fast..

Most of the crew from JewishWorldReview are pro-gun. I heard some interviews with them before, and they all but TRAMPLED on the "didn't you see Schindler's List" jews as they called them. (ouch, HARSH!!)

panty wetter.. hehehe
