I know there are a couple of people who work with locks professionally on the board. To they and anyone else with real world experience please jump in.

My personal vehicle is a van with an AMSEC HC1854 RSC (VSC? ) mounted inside. (You should have heard the shocked voice from the car dealer when they let me know that the "safe" I was having them install was a "G-g-gun safe" ) The safe is also completly surrounded by a bunk made of 1/2" wood with a lifting lid. I received one with a mechanical lock ( I did not care, it was cheaper and they had it in stock) . While the RSC is used to transport firearms, self defense firearms are not stored in it so speed of opening is not a issue.

Chicago cold weather has started and I am noticing that it is more difficult to get the lock to open now. It frequently requires 3-4 attempt using the combination to open it. During the summer it would only take 1-2 attempts per opening.

I am now wondering if this could be due to cold weather or if vibrations from being mounted in a vehicle could be affecting it. I do not have access to an appropriate size garage to due a quick warm/cold comparasin. I plan to do so the next time I take it in for service but thats not for another 8K miles.

Did I make a mistake? Should I have gotten the electronic one? I was told it was possible to switch them. Is that correct.

Again anyone with real world experience please jump in.

Thank you

PS Having a RSC for firearms was not why I got the van but it sure is a real nice fringe benifit:cool:
