A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

...

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Strange how gun control laws have only gotten stricker over the last 10 years, but incidents like this happen more fequently. It's pretty obvious, more rules WILL NOT WORK.

I think HR-1022 just got a major breath of new life with this event, even though an "assault weapon" was not used, they will see it as plenty of justification. I also think there is a 99% chance now of some majorly draconian gun control laws marching through congress.:fire: I hate to say it, but this event could be the "one" that changes public opinion against us.:fire: :uhoh: If this happens, the GOP won't resist these bills in Congress due to the shift in public opinion.:fire:  I truly hope this does not happen, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm pretty nervous and frightened about the future of our gun rights and the 2nd ammendment. This is scary.:uhoh: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we (gun owners) and the NRA can effectively combat this inevitable, upcoming assault on our rights.

As long as we think its cool, or we can be recognized faster, if we use course, foul, insulting language, in home, public,or work, we will have a hard time finding responsible people who can raise responsible citizens. We turn loose our children on the computer so they can play games to learn tactics similar to the VT shootings and others,(Columbine).
When we are forbidden to monitor what our own kids watch,Movies,Utube,Myspace, the deciding force in the home has evolved to be the child. While we are making dinner arrangement, SISY and junior is in the bedrom computer leaning how to take out as many Porkons as posible before they are Neutralized.
"We are so proud of our kids, There is no one that can tell them what to do, or us. Parenting is my job #$%^&*(."
"Kids go to your room!. I,m watching sports"'

This is the mentality we face. This student's father wants heads to roll NOW and he would go to his daughter's side but... there are no readily available hotel rooms nearby. :barf:

John and Jennifer Shourds of Lovettsville, Va. demanded the immediate firings of University President Charles Steger and Virginia Tech Campus Police Chief W.R. Flinchum who he said "screwed up" the handling of separate shooting incidents that left 33 students dead, including the shooter.

The Shourds said they received a phone call from their daughter, Alexandra, a freshman at the college in Blacksburg, who was unsure of how to handle a vague university e-mail received around 9:20 a.m. regarding the first shooting incident that happened at the West Ambler Johnston Hall around 7:15 a.m.

Since that call, Shourds said he and his family have felt anger, fear and indignation over the day’s events. The Shourds have been trying to contact their daughter as much as possible and John Shourds said they would have been on their way to see Alexandra had they had any success in booking hotels in the Blacksburg area.

My personal view but I think the VT administration is going to be a lot more concerned about what may happen to them as a result of this disaster than we need be about the loss of gun rights.

I. This was not a "routine" school shooting. This was not little Johnny stealing his father's unsecured pistol and shooting other defenceless youngsters. This disaster occurred to a great extent because the college administration disarmed young adults some of whom were of legal firearms carrying age. The victims were young adults who would have been perfectly capable of defending themselves had they not been prevented from doing so by college policy. The fact that the college confirmed this policy after a high-profile court case clearly makes them solely responsible for the policy.

2. There will be legal action on behalf of the families involved. Who are their attorneys going to go after. The college or (on the last information available), a 24 year old chinese national?

3. As a result of this tragedy the US public in general is going to see the fallacy of "Call 911 and wait for the police". The police were on campus, they were already chasing the criminal and they still could not protect the majority of the students who were killed.

4. Banning so called "assault rifles" is not so difficult because a relatively small part of the population owns them. Banning semi-auto pistols is another matter because they are the defence weapon of choice for most of the people who buy a pistol for home defence. The reaction to banning pistols would be much more dramatic than it is to the banning of "assault rifles".

5. This tragedy clearly shows that restricting firearms as a "safety policy" in colleges, and for that matter ordinary schools, is a worthless effort.

Can't go and comfort his daughter because he can't find a hotel room?
Anyone here feel like admitting something like that on national news?

This isn't what happens when you "let people have guns", as some IQ challenged individual posted on another site. This is what happens when you don't allow people to have guns.

"joining the police force is like going into the Marine Corp. You might have to sacrifice your own life for someone else. Its part of the job."

For about 1/3 the starting pay, of the average journyman. We ask a lot of the people we like to ridicule when we're caught speeding.

We can't get rid of the sicko's in our society for the groups that will not take responsibility for their action.

John Shourds said they would have been on their way to see Alexandra had they had any success in booking hotels in the Blacksburg area.

I love my daughter, but not to the point of discomfort to me?

What a sack of rocks.
I bet the daughter being raised under that pin head didn't even realize she's only worth a hotel room.

Hey shooter, look at who we are dealing with in the gun control crowd, the Brady Campaign and the VPC. These people are not logical nor are they rational. They don't care what the facts say on the gun issue, they don't care that society's ills caused this trajedy, all they care about are draconian gun laws and bans. They will use this trajedy to advance their twisted cause, this is despicable, but they will do it. The tactics of the gun control groups are despicable.

This difference is that you, I, and the other folks here on THR are rational, logical, and use common sense. We have to understand our enemy here, that's what they (the gun control groups) are, our enemy.

VaTech Murders

Just one little ol' pistol and a skilled user could have ended the killing.

I hope SOMEONE puts some heat on the VT administration for prohibiting guns on campus while it was legal under State law. I heard one or 2 people mention it on the news in passing, but thats about it.

I think that VT spokesman, Hinckler should PERSONALLY go to the families of every student killed and have to explain that he happily succeeded in killing a law that would have allowed at least some VT students a means of self-defense.

For about 1/3 the starting pay, of the average journyman. We ask a lot of the people we like to ridicule when we're caught speeding.

Just because LEO's don't get paid $100k a year doesn't mean they shouldn't have to risk it all to stop this kind of stuff. That is their only reason for being here in the first place. Speeding tickets just fill up the gaps between serious events like this. If they don't want to risk it then they should hand over their badges.

Pay means nothing. Fire fighters risk their lives almost every single day. Hell, more than a few have died just fighting forest fires. They don't make much more than the average cop. Their job just does not lend itself to "letting your self go".

i am reserving comments about the motives and people involved until more is known, but like most here i am sick of the nonsense that will come from the anti lobby as the result of that.

for that reason, i am buying a gun this week. been thinking for a while on what to get

As I feared it's already starting. The media is starting to twist things to make it sound more sensational such as Geraldo Rivera saying the shooter was carrying automatic weapons. Others are talking about hi-cap mags and many other things have already been said elsewhere too, too many to mention.

Again the law abiding gun owners are going to suffer because of some nut-job murder, a murder who isn't even an American.
