VZ-24: Elevation adjustment question

Yeah, I know, "it has a ladder sight!"

I can hear it now, but the problem is the rear sight BEGINS at 300m, and who knows what type of ammo that was calibrated for. I can tell you that the hot Romanian stuff you find nowadays is still rainbowing at 200yds and impacts several FEET high at that distance.

So, before I go monkeying with it, I was hoping to find out if the front sight is adjustable for elevation. Any takers? Thanks!

The other problem you have to remember is during WW2 most 8mm was heavy ball. So the rear sight was probably calibrated for heavyball and romanian 8mm is around 150 grain making it light ball. So given that they arc differnent I wouldn't be surprised if your sight regulations didn't match the point of impact for your given range. I have the same problem with my K98. I just move it whatever direction it needs to go as it is a range only gun.
Aren't those sights only drift adjustable.(I don't have a VZ24) I thought they used different height front sights to adjust elevation. Either by exchanging for a pair of a different height or filing it is how I would do it. Don't ask me where to get a different height front sight without filing it because I don't even know where to start looking for one.

Yeah, so my question is whether VZ-24's have adjustable front sights. Since the rear sight is clearly marked for elevation, I don't know without asking (or monkeying, which I am trying to avoid).

To adjust elevation on the front sight you have to change the height. So you will either need to file it or get it another front sight that is a different height. Those old rifles aren't threaded to go up and down.

The Mauser's were calibrated so that the average German could aim at the enemy's center mass and be able to make a body hit at normal ranges.

If it shoots high at your range of interest, you need a TALLER front sight.
Brownell has a blank Mauser blade you can file to zero.

the least amount of monkeying occurs if you just pop out the rear site, replace with s&k scope mount, use LER scope/pistol scope. I know some people have a serious aversion to scopes for whatever reason, but there's no other way to get on target without either a REALLY weak load or replacing the front site post.

There is ONE other option. using jbweld you can build up your front post and then file it down slowly to a point at which you are on target. I can't see that coming out in a visibly appealing final product but I have seen it mentioned. vz-24's are fantastic guns though, enjoy yours.

I do already, at ranges of 0 - 50ft...

I am already planning the scoping project, just as you describe. My hope was to figure out something that could be done quicker, as there is a vintage rifle competition coming up!

Easier to load your own ammo. I have found the sights to work pretty well using 198 grain bullets over 47.5 grains of Tu 5000.
