Been wondering what everyone's opinion is on a good quality, but affordable self defense ammo. Specifically something that's readily available at Wal-mart. Affordable is important because I'd like to be able to buy a few boxes to make sure they feed through my XD9 without any problems. Right now I'm carrying ball ammo and I just moved into an older apartment and its got me realizing that ball ammo and thin walls probably wouldn't mix well if I ever had to use my gun

Winchester white box 9mm JHP or Remington JHP 115gr. Im sure they both work the same, but I carry Speer GoldDot 115 +p.

this is what I use.

Works damn good in testing on water bottles, always expands, its cheap, its accurate and well it comes in 50 round boxes!

I'm a big fan of 147gr Gold Dots. Keep in mind that the ammo will last for a while- so once you decide that you are satisfied with the function and accuracy, you won't need to keep buying it in bulk.

Federal HST is only $25 a box of 50... Seems like pretty excellent ammo to me. I've put a few hundred rounds through my carry gun to make sure it shot, not one problem. How it operates in human tissue I'll leave up to others, but the material I've read has all been very convincing.

I am not sure what options walmart will offer other than the plain jane Winchester stuff. May check around your local gun stores to see what they offer, but doubtful it will be as cheap as the winchester stuff.

I kept my guns loaded with WWB JHPs for the longest time, and never had any doubts. Always worked fine in all my guns.

I just hope Walmart never gets out of the gun game like i guess Kmart did, not sure if Target ever had ammo or guns

The Target here doesnt but i didnt know if years ago they did or not,i assumed they never did but wasnt sure

I don't think you mentioned caliber, but regardless, I have to agree with johnle.

Winchester White Box 147gr JHP has tested very well, and that would definitely be my budget carry ammo choice.

I choose to buy Federal HST 147gr +P, but wouldn't feel too badly about loading up with the WWB in 147gr.

WWB 115 JHPs

I use WWB 115 grain JHPs. I've read several claims that said they performed exactly like Winchester Silvertips. In fact, I've read that they were the same, minus the silver plating. Steven Camp speaks well of them. I think they were his third choice for personal defense rounds.

At Wallmart you are going to be limited (as others have said) to WWB JHP.

Why limit yourself?
Many online ammo shops offer premium JHP for around $20-$25 per 50 (for 9mm).

Federal LE HST 147gr 9mm is a good round and cheap enough to buy 5-10 boxes to test reliability & function.

WWB 115 fmj, WWB jhp 147, remington umc 1154 jhp. all feed reliably in glocks and xd...

I've been buying/shooting the Winchester 'Personal Protection' 147gr HP 9mm and 180gr 40S&W HP offerings for a while. They are not the cleanest shooting and they use stinky powder :) but this stuff has functioned 100% in all my pistols and the quality of the ammo looks to be acceptable.

A box of 50 is still under $20 for both offerings at WallyWorld.

Wha? Walmart WWB is very very cheap. They are talking about JHP, not ball.

I occasionally buy WWB JHP for a "reserve", but I do carry it alot. Not in .40 (the 180gr. JHP has a very small opening, looks like it wouldnt open very much), but the .45 ones always seem very nice and the 9x19 JHP are always nice, particularly that our local Walmarts stopped carrying the 115gr and switched to the 147 (I like that weight better).

ever hear of aquilla ammo? they make ammo specific for not going threw walls and its pretty cheap. 17 for a box of 20 in my area, that being said ive never used it but a friend of mine will swear by it.

With genuine Federal HST or Winchester Ranger going for $25 bucks for a box of 50 on the web I can't see the logic of buying defense ammo at WallyWorld. It might work OK...the key being "might" but do you want to mess with "might" when your life is on the line?

Cheapest 40S&W Ranger 180gr that I can find is $30/box. When can you get it for less?

What do you think that it 'might not' do? It's consistently gone BANG! every time I pull the trigger.

WalMart logs and records all ammuntion sales, including photos of the buyer. They then turn those records over to the police to do as they want with them.

Find another source of ammo.

As to penetration, most pistol bullets will penetrate about the same in drywall. Even shotgun birdshot will pentrate two sheets of thin 3/8" dry wall. The fact is that there is no absolute guarantee against overpenetration in the situation you describe.

Federal and Speer Lawman here too.

I would be most concerned that the ammo wouldn't expand well (especially through heavy clothes), or that it would fragment, and not penetrate well. This was an issue, with older generation bullets...even the high end stuff. Now there is new ammo that has been proven out by Law Enforcement agencies. Until similar tests are run on the WallyWorld stuff, I'll stick with the proven stuff.
