Weird range pick up brass.

The first one is a 9MM fired in a .40.
The second one is an example of the guppy belly brass from a seriously unsupported chamber.
The first one is more ignorant than the second....
Both these statements are true.

Although it could also just be carelessness. It is one of the pitfalls of converting your .40 to fire 9mm and forgetting which barrel you have installed

This is just some of the weird stuff I find. I bet it would get your attention when it went off.

The really scary thing is you see a lot more of these than one would think would be normal at least the 9MM in the 40 that is. Also there are many glock shooters that do not reload that leave behind guppy belly brass.
I wonder if anyone has bothered to do a study on accuracy differences of supported chambers vs unsupported chambers.

It gets your attention, because generally, it will sound like a weak report and will not cycle the slide back. So, you tap and rack and hopefully you notice the severely expanded case. If not, then you fire again, and go through the same motions. -- I've seen a buddy of mine do it on one of my Glocks (G22 firing 9MM). After a couple I came to look and then we noticed that he had loaded 9MM in the .40. I still have a couple of those cases on my bench somewhere.

As to the guppy belly brass, even with some very old Glocks (17 and 22) I haven't created brass like that. But, my 9MM Bushmaster tended to do something similar as it would start extracting the case before enough energy had dissipated. It tended to be most of the way around, but scary looking brass. Still have some of those on the bench as well.

The extractor will hold it against the force of the fireing pin ... usually but not always , depends on the extractor .
So much for headspacing on the cartridge mouth !!!

I have heard many (on the internet lore) say they fire .40 out of a 10mm chamber on purpose…

EDIT:
Should say from a semi auto…

I shoot .40 out of a 10mm GP 100……😎

I'm surprised a 9mm would fire in a 40.
The rim is held by the extractor against the breechface. The case isn't head spacing on the case mouth
Yes, why 40-9mm conversion barrels work fine without changing extractors.

And 40S&W could fire in 45ACP also. ;)

Yes, I want Glock 20 SF (10mm) to shoot 40S&W reloads as I have plenty of 5 gallon buckets of brass and 155/165/180 gr bullets (10mm brass is harder to come by).

While I could use 10-40S&W conversion barrel with shorter chamber, I would have no issues shooting 40S&W rounds in 10mm with longer chamber (It would be like shooting 9mm with very short resized 9mm case length that is "head spacing" off extractor).

Yes, I found a .40 shot in a .45 on our range......and it looks just like that only bigger and with a split down one side......was looking for my photo to no avail. But there was only one........wonder why? :)

If I find it I'll post it. I'm curious how is felt and how it ejected......must they have been hand chambered?

After making similar mistakes myself, I now tend to carefully choose what I take to the range at the same time. For example, I no longer take 44 Mag and 45 Colt revolvers together.

Both of these I found last summer at the outdoor range I go to. The 223 caught my eye while picking up a the end of the visit. The 9mm I think one of the kids stepped on, or at least someone did.

A 9mm round will load into certain .40 s&w magazines and sit down in there somewhere in between round numbers 1 and 15..... Quietly.
Easy mistake if you're careless and slightly dis organized.
I've also noticed how dazed and confused some people get on a live fire range, I can see this happening to an "experienced amateur" quite easily.

Question: Do you think they even know it happened? Probably not. No course corrections achieved other than to reiterate to us on the number of morons out there!!!

I had an Astra A-100 9mm that I loved and extra mags were expensive. At a gun show I found one but it was a 40 and the dealer said it worked perfectly in a 9mm so I got it and he was right. Fed 9mm with no malfunction for years and the only difference I could see was it was marked 40. I had no 40 cal pis at the time so no worries about mixing it up.
