Well, I went and did it. New Colt. (Yes, it's a 1911.)

Ever since they got this new Government Model in the local shop, I'd been eyeballing it. Something about it was very appealing, moreso than a Springfield Mil-Spec. I can't say what. I even had a dream about it, though.

So, I figured, what the hell. My student loans came through, and I've paid for my up-and-coming fall semester of college, and I've got plenty of money in savings now for when I move to Utah next year. So I treated myself.

Bought one of the new rollstamp Colt Government Models. Chose this over a like-new-with-box (had only been test fired) Springfield Mil-Spec, which cost $450. I paid $610 for the gun, plus about $35 in taxes, and six dollars for the Permit-to-Purchase.

As soon as I finish my McChicken, I'm going to take it apart for the first time and give it a good cleaning/lubing. (MY CZ-97 and Model 57 need cleaning too.)

I'm not happy with the gun as is, though. These checkered grips have got to go. And eventually, I'm going to get an ambi safety put on (being left-handed, and all).

The gun's fit and finish are top-notch; it's every bit as smooth as my CZ-97B. The matte blueing is even and nice looking. The gun also points very well; point it at something always seems to line the sights up, too (the CZ-97 does this for me as well, and this is how I tell if a gun "fits" me or not).

Colt's new rollstamp is a DEFINATE improvement over the old M1991A1(TM) that they used to have. The left side of the slide is marked Colt's Government Model .45 Automatic Caliber and has a little horsey on it. The right side of the slide is marked -Series 80-. All in all, a very classic looking pistol. I love the spur hammer and clean slide, too. Very GI looking, but with better sights. It's exactly the kind of 1911 I had wanted. You can keep those front cocking serrations, beveled magazine wells and commander hammers, thanks.

The trigger is very crisp, too. The safety is familiar because my CZ-97 has the same type of frame mounted safety. The grip safety...you don't even know it's there.

All in all, I'm very happy. (Of course, for upwards of six hundred bucks, I fricking better be...)

UPDATE: The insides of the pistol are coated with what for the life of me looks like sawdust; it's a brown, powdery substance. I don't know what it is or why it's there, but ti's packed in in some places. It's not rust or anything, it's just going to be a pain to clean out.

Awesome, congrats. I know you've been thinking about a 1911 for a long time.

cheers

Well, I got all of the crap cleaned out of there finally. There were literally solid chunks of this stuff inside the guide rod (it's hollow) and up in the recoil spring plug. I have no idea.

In any case, One thing I notice about the pistol is that when there's a magazine in place (one of the two mags that came with the pistol, each marked "Colt 45 Auto" with a little horsey on the baseplate) the mag release button is VERY hard to push. Keep in mind, being left handed I push this button with my trigger finger. It's VERY, VERY stiff. I'm hoping it'll losen up with firing, or failing that, new magazines.

Any ideas?

It's just new.
Try disassembling the catch and lubing it. The real fix, is just use it, and it will get easier to operate.

If after the above, it's still to stiff for you, buy a reduced power catch spring, but be careful it's not TOO weak, or you may have problems with magazine retention.

"Everyone needs" a 1911..... :D

But as you have a CZ-97, the Colt may disappoint. Everytime I shoot off my 1911 against my CZ-97, the -97 wins hands down.

Lets hope its not your last.. those little ponies get addicting.

Soon you'll have a stable full.

Great purchase. The price is a little steep, but as long as you are happy with the gun. I have one of the new roll marked stainless gov't models, excellent shooter. The dimple throating makes it very feed reliable. I bought mine stock, and it is going to stay that way.

On the bottom of your magazines in addition to the markings you already stated, do you ha "C" or an "M" stamped on them?

Magazines are marked "C", which I'm told is Colt factory, as opposed to "M", for "Metalform", who makes most of the mags for Colt, Springfield, and Kimber.

The price might seem high...but keep in mind that all prices are higher in my area.

Typical examples:

Springfield Mil-Spec: $515

Glock 21: $610

HK USP: $749

As for modifications...I'm adding the ambidextrious safety (eventually) only because it's required for me to properly operate the pistol. I really can't use the safety when holding the pistol left-handed.

Being someone from the southern part of Michigan, I can say that you paid what I'd expect to pay locally. :)

Enjoy your new Colt, they've been making fantastic pistols these past few years!

Nice score.
I have 2 Kimbers and a Colt Commander. The Colt outshoots the Kimbers easily. In fairness though, the Colt spent a brief time in Colt's custom shop for minor trigger work and some polishing. I do get somewhat of a chuckle though reading some of the posts concerning "tight fit", since the Colt rattles like a bucket of bolts when you shake it. Doesn't seem to bother it in the accuracy dept though since it shoots off hand sub 2X caliber holes @ 7 yards w/any ammo. I have to go with Hydra Shoks or handloads in the Kimbers to duplicate that.

and six dollars for the Permit-to-Purchase.
:barf:
oughta refer to that as an infringement fee.

Well, that's Michigan for you. Everybody up here in the UP is pretty conservative, just abouts (except for that one cluster around Marquette). But because of old Union ties from the mining days people vote Democrat, which is why we've had a nozzle named Bart Stupak as our congresscritter for as long as I can remember.

And, of course, there are all those liberals down in Wayne County around detroit. They're the reason Granholm won the Gubenetorial race.

Must buy Colt Combat Commander! Must buy it Now. Oh wait I dont have enough money saved and NONE of the local stores have them.
I love a good Colt 1911. My favorite is currently away having Heine sights installed.

Congrats on your new piece, I know you will enjoy it.

Ps Check out STI's new ambi safety, they have a new way of attaching the the right side paddle. This is important because the old style ambis could have the right side paddle walk out and lock up the gun.

Cool gun.

And once you get to Utah and get your CCW, you don't have to pay anything extra when you purchase your gun. Not even $5 for the instacheck. :)

That brown stuff inside your Colt is....well.....it comes from horses:neener:

Happyguy:D
