OK,the wife wants to go to NYC and see a show.....I know I can't bring my CCW,what about one of those colapsable batons(asp)? Are they legal for a civilian?Either that or I was thinking of getting a walking stick w/ a heavy handle........

Tony - walking cane (heavy handle sounds good!) ... and your keys. That I fear may be best you can hope for. Sure as heck, a baton is major no-no!

You actually WANT to go to NYC???? Oh well ... watch ya 6 :)

How about a

4 C-cell Maglite in your hip pocket? You know, to find your seat in the theater and read the street signs as you look for your car! ;)

Yeah,I guessed the asp was a no no.....I saw a "walking cane" in some gun mag .......just can't remember the name of it.....it had a weighted end and was properly "balanced" for self defense..the fact that I actually have a limp is finally a plus for once...... ;)

Check out the cold steel City Stick. Smokey Mountain knives normally has a good price on these (under $60). They are fiberglass and stainless steel.

what I carry in NYC: A folding knife with a blade less than 4 inches, and OC.

You can not have an OC/CS combination though is my undersanding.

What can you carry?.....I've lived in nyc my entire life and have never been mugged or robbed..neither have my wife or kids.....my advice on what to carry as your primary weapon is ......drum roll please......CARRY YOURSELF- LIKE YOU BELONG HERE .....don't go into BAD neigborhoods ....you'll figure it out, it really is not that hard to do......A knife under four inches is ok...tighten it up a little so they can't claim that it's a gravity knife in case you need it ...but...I doubt you will.....DON"T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!.....flame on but when when TonyB get's home safe and sound I hope he gives a report on how over rated the danger in NYC is.The bottom line is that the city is more dangerous than most places but (IN GENERAL) there is no reason to be in fear of your life unless you are looking for trouble or you are just plain stupid.
Stay alert TonyB and you'll be fine....you'll see

NYC isnt as bad as many make it out to be. That said however the same basic rules of knowing what is going on around, and avoid "bad areas" is always good to follow.

I mean I have spent many a day and night in Da Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and it isnt all that bad.

Oh yes there are BAD areas, that I wouldnt want to go to at all!!!

Bad Areas?

Oh,I guess there will be a sign somewhere indicating you are entering the forbidden zone...
I am a native NY'er-I was born there and I have lived elsewhere as well. NYC is the only place I have been held up (twice) with a pistol and innumerable times with knives. I was stabbed when only 11 by another school kid.
Bad areas?
One block is cool, the next one isn't I lived in Harlem for a year and was fine -I got stuck up near Washington quare Park!
All of NYC is a bad area! Get a stout cane of some kind, pepper spray is legal and knives with 4inch or less.
My brother is a cop in NY & he wants me to visit but I aint spending another dime in that smelly armpit untill I can carry without having to become a cop myself.

Gunsmith,
What crime stats are you using to determine your opinion of violent crime in NYC?...or let's say for arguments sake ,a crime in which you would need a weapon to defend yourself?....Their are many more DANGEROUS places in the USA than NYC....do you disagree?.....would you avoid all of those places to?
I see that you are living in S.F......."google" the most dangerous cities in the USA and you will find depending on the year that NYC and SF are similar in violent crime......if you don't want to do it just ask and i'll do it for you.

Not to be a wise guy but there are all kinds of "SIGNS" that will alert you to where you should not be.

Grew up 18 years in NYC. Got robbed w/ knife once in JHS in the late 80s/early 90s.

City has been really safe the past couple of years tho. I think I lived through the worst of it (koch and dinkins).

I would probably carry some bear repellent and just wipe it/chuck it after using. You could probably get away with shooting someone with a gun in self defense, but you would have to avoid being apprehended by the police afterwards. Obviously this is a lose-lose situation. However, keep in mind that any situation in which you are likely to have no choice but to protect your life, the police are not going to be there to either protect you or catch you.

Obviously if you do decide to carry, it better be a damn small pistol. (keltec?)

I've lived in nyc my entire life and have never been mugged or robbed..neither have my wife or kids

I've been driving almost my entire life and never have been in an accident but I still wear a seat belt and keep an eye out for the "crazy" drivers. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong and it's always better to have and not need than need and not have.

Hey all,

Some folks actually have to LIVE in the bad areas and thus, can not avoid them. I was born and raised in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn (as was Mike Tyson, Chris Rock & half of all NYC rappers). Lived in Bushwick & Williamsburg sections of Brooklyn as well. As mentioned in previous posts, your best defense is what most on this forum call "situational awareness" and what I call "street smarts" or "common sense".

I agree that NYC rep for violence is exaggerated (crime stats will corroborate this) BUT its still a big city and like many big cities, there is poverty. Where there is poverty, there is crime. Luckily, I was able to move to a place that I feel is better for my family but I still have plenty kin left in NYC (including two NYPD LEOs with a third joining the academy soon). I still visit but I doubt I'll ever return to live.

The same thing everybody else carries... guns. I spotted three people carrying while I was there. They weren't hiding it very well. I suppose they could have been police, but I don't think so.

Sonny -my stats

My crime stats for NYC come from having a dad and brother being cops in NY.
They come from being mugged in nice neighbohoods and living in Harlem,Fort Washington,Washington Heights,Riverdale,Yonkers,Staten Island,Williamsburg, The East Village,Corona.
Question for ya!
How many New York'ers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Answer for ya!
"None of yer Biz!" :neener:
Anyway,I was cracking wise when I mentioned the "forbidden zone" please don't take offense,my humor doesn't allways translate well...When I was living on 94th and RSD it was very nice, however a walk to the park past Amsterdam ave could be deadly.
I hear things have improved but it's the only place I've ever been held up with a gun.
I moved out west after 30 years of insanity,I would love to visit but I refuse to spend a plug nickle in any city I cant pack in whether I "need to" or not.

Remember that it is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

I think that I'd pretty much carry what I carry now.

Or a sign saying, "please don't have relations with my corpse after you kill me!"

I'd move, pure and simple.
