In my experience I've loved both my Spanish FR8(straight bolt) and my Colt AR 15 9mm, I couldn't get enough of both. My 2 cents.:)

I second or third the m1 carbine.----
----and was quite possible the most enjoyable rifle I have ever owned.

Today I was shooting a M1 Carbine I bought a couple weeks ago.

And I was having a absolutely miserable time.:D

I have to agree with most of the others who voted for the M1 Carbine. It is s dream to shoot and always brings a smile to my face.

There are some reproduction Thompsons to be had from Auto-Ordnance for just over 1k...

I'm a big fan of pistol caliber carbines for sheer fun. I have a Marlin Camp 9 in a Muzzlelite bullpup stock. I loved it just as much before I restocked it, but the stock made it short, light and perfectly balanced and pointable. I don't think I've ever shot a pistol caliber carbine that I didn't like though, so instead of taking this as an endorsement for the Marlin, get out and try a few to see which you like best! :)

What's a fair price to pay for a Thompson?

The semi auto 16 inch barrel Thompsons (Kahr) are selling at the gun shows for $900-$1,000.

The things are heavy so it's like shooting a 22.

I modified a Weaver mount to fit my Thompson for mounting a Red Dot sight.

Yeah I know, a Red Dot on a Thompson looks like VW fenders on a Corvette, but my 69 year old eyes need all the help they can get.:D

The 10/22 carbine can be a lot of fun to customize, and it is DEFINITELY fun to shoot! I'm going to add a forward pistol grip and a laser sight as soon as my next paycheck comes.

The hi-popint is also extremely entertaining.
