I'm a big fan of pistol caliber carbines for sheer fun. I have a Marlin Camp 9 in a Muzzlelite bullpup stock. I loved it just as much before I restocked it, but the stock made it short, light and perfectly balanced and pointable. I don't think I've ever shot a pistol caliber carbine that I didn't like though, so instead of taking this as an endorsement for the Marlin, get out and try a few to see which you like best!
The 10/22 carbine can be a lot of fun to customize, and it is DEFINITELY fun to shoot! I'm going to add a forward pistol grip and a laser sight as soon as my next paycheck comes.
