So I bought a Mini-14 from this thread; http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=522320 ;

Silly me, I thought the rifle would at least come with the original factory magazine. I was mistaken. :fire:
When I contacted "rc601962" , he said, " I did not have a magazine for sale with this gun." :fire::cuss:

Now I ask all of you, is the way you sell rifles?
Am I out of line thinking that there would be a magazine included in the sale?? :banghead:

I would expect a mag...but then again, it's not in the picture. So part of me thinks he should have mentioned it didn't come with a mag, part of me thinks you should have noticed and asked. Or maybe not even notice the picture, but just say "To clarify, I am receiving a fully functioning rifle (Brand X, Model Y) with a magazine, case, lock, etc?"

I guess we know the answer to the question in post #9.

Anyhow, JoeMal is right. He didn't lie to you, you didn't ask every question imaginable, so you got what you paid for.

I'd go find some mags, and enjoy the snot out of that rifle!

IMHO, you should have asked. If it's not visible in the pics or mentioned in the description, I assume it's not a part of the package.

As far as it being a necessary part of the gun in terms of function, it's not like the thing was missing the sear or the trigger. Mags are, to me, an item that people usually have spares of on hand or can pick up seperately pretty easily.

That said, if it wasn't a part of the sale, it would have been nice for the seller to mention that.

Would you sell a gun that was missing a part to make it function?
Absolutely

Ever sold a car that needs new tires? Yeah the car might 'function', but you see where I'm getting at.

It does suck, but then again a mag will probably cost $30 max.

I would've expected at least a factory magazine to be included. It wasn't stated that it did come with one but I think it's a reasonable assumption that it should. If not, the listing should've stated that it did not include one. You still got a good deal though, I'd just buy a few and forget about it.

But yes, if I was selling something missing parts, I would definitely indicate in the listing.

I don't know if Ruger is still selling them but for a period of time not long ago, they were selling Ruger Mini-14 20 rounds factory magazines, direct-to-retail-buyers. If I recall, they were $29.95. (??)

You might go to the Ruger site and see if they're still selling them.

Good luck.

I don't find it wrong to sell a gun without a magazine, but I would expect the courtesy of the seller stating that it doesn't come with one. Buyer beware.

Mini-14's are mag finicky so stick with a factory one.

I wouldn't sell without a mag, unless there simply wasn't one. If I were to sell a gun and nothing else in the household took the same mags, I'd probably sell all of them at a fair price, mags to guns you don't own are clutter after all.

But in the end, mini-14 mags aren't that expensive, so whether you get spun up about it is up to you.

At least the magazine that came with the rifle when it was new should have been included. If for some reason I didn't get a magazine with a gun purchase (which I've done once), I would expect a corresponding price reduction.

I'm not saying I wouldn't have mentioned that it came with no magazine. However, the rifle will chamber a round and fire it without a magazine in place, IIRC, so saying that it was "missing a part to make it function" is a bit over the top.

Maybe a little on the slack (or shady-ish) side in terms of not saying it was without a magazine, but then again, the seller never said it did come with one either.

FWIW, I think it still seems like a decent price even without a magazine.

$475 shipped and has a trigger job? Sounds like a good deal. In my area, you'd still need at least another $50 to buy any used Mini-14.

Not the most honest thing on the sellers part? Sure. But the picture shows no mag and there is no mention of one, so no false advertising. I'll add another vote to "lesson learned and go buy a mag". Always ask questions buying anything used.

This is a classic instance of a "neither inclusion nor exclusion" scenario - basically, not mentioning the magazine at all. It's difficult to say if this is the "right" or "wrong" way to sell guns, but if there is any question, I always make it a point to ask the seller. Here, it was quite simple - you could've just posted "is there a magazine included with the gun?" or tried to bargain to have a few thrown in with the deal. I always make sure everything is included when I'm buying a gun - yes, even things that may seem dumb to ask - to make sure I'm getting everything necessary to load the gun up and shoot it without purchasing extra parts.

I would be more than happy to take that rifle off of you for the same price you bought it for. At that price I would be more than happy to buy a magazine or two.

If the price wasn't so good, i would be upset.

For the price you got it... id have to say suck it up and buy a new mag.
