What do you like about having extra ammo?

For me there are two considerations:

1) I like the idea of having extra ammo should ammo suddenly become restricted, or otherwise hard to get.

2) If prices become prohibitive, I can still do a lot of shooting before I run out.

P.S., This is not a thread about how much extra ammo you want or need.

I always have a lot of ammunition, but I never have extra ammunition.

I try to always have enough ammunition to let me ride out the next panic/shortage without having to buy when availability is low and prices are high.

For me, same reasons. Plus self-reliance. If I've got a good supply, I don't have to rely on someone else for it, and reloading nearly everything really helps.

What's extra? More than I can shoot in a single session? Anything over what I can move in a truck? I don't think I have any "extra" at all. I have what I want and think I might need in the future.

"Extra" ammo is like having "extra" money. Its a term that doesnt exist in a logical world. But, since we dont live in a logical world, I like having "extra" ammo to use as currency for the day the world implodes, much the same as liqueur/cigarettes and other "trade-able" tangible assets.:D

The same 'like' I have about extra toilet paper. Convenience and knowing that it will only go up in price. I could survive without it, but I really, really do not want to.

I suppose my idea of "extra" ammo is more like what I would consider to be my strategic reserve. I guess I think of it as ammo that has been set aside for future use, possibly in a time when for whatever reasons it's extremely difficult to come by.

Clearly the benefit of stashing any valuable thing away for the future is to bolster your sense of confidence. Some of us have "enough" ammo around to shoot for years, or maybe trade in a future economy where Benjis are kindling.

I like having "enough" ammo. How much is enough? I dunno as I have yet to reach that number. Every time I buy a bulk supply, I budget out more money for the next bulk purchase. As to why, we can't discuss that here. "um, did that sound like a black helicopter to you?"

Enough ammo calculation.

1. How old are you?

2. How much longer do you expect to live? Any children or grandchildren.

3. How much do you shoot each year? Family.

4. Do you have children or grand children?

5. Do you intend to teach them how to shoot?

6. Assume a 3% increase in each persons ammo requirement each year.

6a. For Competition add a 10% increase in ammo consumption the first 10 years and 3% thereafter.

7. Friends or others you provide ammo for/share allotment is set at 5% of your annual usage.

Once you figure the amount out you will know how much is enough. As for "extra ammo" that will be some number over and above of what is enought ammo. Say you want a 20% cushion of extra ammo then multiply your "enough" figure by 1.20 then subtract the "enough" total from that and you will have the extra ammo number.

Since I completed my Stock Up Phase several years ago, prior to the prices going crazy and the supply of some items drying up, I do not have to worry about skyhigh prices or shortages ... barring the purchase of firearms in not-in-my-stock caliber(s), that is. ;)

It is a comfortable feeling knowing that I no longer have to source ammo in order to shoot any of my guns, y'know?

Enough ?

I do believe that I have enough to shoot for the rest of my life [ I hope ].

I think that buying when I could, and building a small stock with the anticipation that it would be scarce or not there at all --- was the reasoning.

I don't focus on my count as much now because I'm not going to be a beggar at WW or pay scalpers for overpriced cheap ammo. But yeah I feel good about my stockpile, having good quality ammo for SD in abundance is the most important thing for me now, I not to confident in the future nowadays.

I have ammo anxiety. "Gee, I'd better not go shooting, I only have x boxes left".

Now when I go to the range I take an ammo can full of loose rounds with me.

Never enough?

In anticipation of Y2K (1999-2000), I stocked up with what I believed would carry me for a long, long time. 35,000 hard-cast handgun bullets, 20,000 jacketed handgun bullets, 25,000 jacketed rifle bullets, 50 thousand primers and 48 pounds of powder.

Most of the aforementioned was purchased at phenomenally great prices from Midway, Midsouth Shooters Supply, Valiant Bullets and David Vick’s reloading supplies for primers.

Except for the powder and the jacketed bullets, my stock is depleted to 20% of the initial purchase. So what was enough in 1999-2000 is not up to enough for me at this time. I’m sure I can hold out until this latest panic buying ordeal is over as long as we are not hit with another fiasco in the near future.

I like to keep about a years worth of components on hand. Some components will work in several different cartridges so it affords me the opportunity to load up what I need for the moment.

No shortages at my house or being held hostage by WallyWorld's two box limit.

All my extra amo is stored next to my extra gold, extra diamonds and extra paddock girls.:D

When the zombie apocalypse breaks out I don't wanna get caught short. I mean what if you run out and they are trying to get in your house? Are you going to be loading fast as you can to load straight in your gun to shoot them climbing through your window? Bad plan. Stock up now before the zombie outbreak.

LOL @ claiborne and fallout mike.

Hee!

What do I like about having "extra" ammo?

The extra ammo.

If I discharge roughly 300 rounds every range visit, I have enough for five days' shooting in each of .75, .63, .45, .30 and .22... and that's not very much at all "extra", now that I think about. BRB.

Well, in most of the movies they are very slow and uncoordinated, so you would prolly have more time than you think. I wouldn't worry about stocking up too much.

I like having enough ammo that I can still shoot the same amount monthly that I always have. I'm also happy that if needed I could supply several good friends with a basic load of ammo without cutting myself short.
