A while back we were talking about how easy it is to get a CCW in Alabama and how it appears that almost 10% of the population have a CCW permit. This has lead me to wonder which state in the Union has the highest per capita rate of people that either CC or OC ( legally of course ).

Who wants to guess because I don't know the answer and I don't know where to look for the answer?

I don't know, only stat I found recently was over %17 of Arizonans are involved in the shooting sports, according to AZ Game and Fish. With Constitutional Carry in place, no permit required, the number could be high, very high.

In Alaska, everyone 21 or older that can legally own a firearm and has picture ID can conceal/carry - no permit required. Open carry is even less restricted.

I don't know if we have the highest - but it is very common to see open carry and conceal carry seems pretty common as well. In small towns (which are the norm here as well) there is no local police and so folks do not live under the illusion of police protection and so take a more realistic view of personal responsibility for the protection of themselves and their loved ones.

If you don't limit the question to states, and just focus on geographic areas, I'd guess Baltimore for concealed carry.

my guess would be between vermont, arizona, and alaska.

I'm leaning towards arizona, though.

Ha ha you funny man; You might actually be right but I doubt it. I do however know even with the ridiculous restrictions people carry anyway. Too many thugs packing. Miami metro too both legal and illegal.

Same here in NC. I had to wait about 3 months before I received my permit. I don't think it's because of the numbers, just the incompetent local government dragging their feet as usual.

Here in MS. it is just fingerprints and background check.6 weeks later it comes in the mail.

Just did a Google search - Highest per cent is South Dakota -7.4%; tied for second are Pennsylvania and Indiana - 6.4%. This surprises me, I would have thought Florida would lead the league because of being the first state to have "shall issue" legislation.

also, just because someone DOESN'T have a permit, doesn't mean they DON'T carry. There are places that do not require a permit to carry open or concealed.

AK & Vermont being the two places not requiring permits. There are very few permits here (which you can get for reciprocity) because they're not necessary. Also the AK allowance to carry is not limited to AK residents. Any visitor 21 or older that can legally carry can do so here without a permit.

Florida wasn't the first state to have shall-issue concealed carry, just the one that started the trend of states passing shall-issue legislation.

The top five states on the list CoRoMo linked to were all shall-issue before Florida.

pa is 7.5% now . we have close to 700000 lincensees in this state

If we're talking per capita, and both open and concealed, I think AK has to be tops. AZ has a much higher population and a very big city.

Baltimore? Only illegal CCW; honest folk in MD can't get a permit. Political connections or big bucks brings home the pistol, the rest of us don't count.
