My wife's carry piece is a Glock 36.
.45ACP, single stack subcompact. As for .45 being too much recoil for a woman, RUBBISH. She is just over 5 ft tall, and weighs in at 120 pounds. The attached photo is her shooting it in a class (taught by
Pat Goodale) where she shot over 300 rounds in an afternoon.
By the way, I heartily agree with the suggestion on having someone else teach her. As I wrote right after we took Pat's Handgun I class:
Guys, Get your girl into a "Professional" shooting class.
My wife has a natural propensity to lean backwards while shooting a sidearm. I’ve noticed other women who do as well. I kept suggesting she overcome it and assume a more aggressive/in control position, even physically adjusting her pose, to no avail. Nothing I said or did made a bit of difference.
Then, we took Pat's class.
Pat went over stances in the classroom, explained his preferred stance, and contrasted it with several others. Once we got on the range, he spent maybe one minute with her in the beginning. He corrected her stance maybe 3 times during the first part of the day. Now she holds a good stance all of the time, and self corrects when she catches herself standing wrong. I think the next time my wife wants me to teach her something, I'll make her pay me for it. Maybe then I'll gain some credibility.
Face it: Husbands don't know anything, and can't teach anything. I see this all the time in various areas of teaching, not just shooting. Boyfriends can sometimes get away with it, but only until they become long term or steady boyfriends. (This may work when you reverse the genders too, but since I've never had a boyfriend I'll leave that observation to someone more qualified)
It is just like having a 'consultant' tell your company something. The employees on staff can advise management for years and have it blown off. But have a high priced consultant tell management the same damn thing, and it is suddenly gospel that must be implemented immediately (Please don't ask me to expound on how I know this, my blood pressure is high enough).
