1- a .22 lr, handgun or rifle
2- a medium caliber handgun for SD and small game - 9mm to .45
3 - a shotgun for hunting and clays....preferably a nice O/U
4 - a medium bore rifle in something like 260, 7-08, 308
5 - something for total fun and others to use

 357 Smith& Wesson revolver
Glock 22 (40 cal) auto
22 cal rifle with scope
12 ga. shotgun
Springfield m-14 :scrutiny:

AR15 in .223
Rem 700 in .308
1911 in .45ACP
Rem 870 in 12ga (with multiple barrels)
S&W 686 in .38/.357mag

These are all pretty much mainstream firearms and easy to get parts for.

Of course, if allowed a 6th firearm it would be something in a .22LR caliber, such as a Ruger 10/22 or Ruger MarkII pistol.

Heh - Cute

I can tell not everyone is actually reading the posts.

This one is a real chuckle.

from post #29

In order of importance

1. 50 bmg for general use
2. Phoenix arms .25 (with +p)
3. FN 57 for backup to the phoenix
4. 300 WSSM for small game
5. HiPoint 9mm for second backup

:D

Nicely played.

I'll play, too .... but, an 'arsenal'?

(1) .50 BMG rifle
(2) Colt AR-15 (.223/5.56)
(3) Kel-tec PLR-16 (.223/5.56)
(4) Remington 870 12 gauge
(5) 9mm semi-auto (Glock/Sigarms/CZ) w/.22 conversion kit.

.... And a tactical wheelbarrow.

Browning Hi-Power 9mm
Any semi-auto AK
S&W Model 60 .38spl. 2in.
AR-15 series
Mossberg Model 500 12ga pump

Ooooooo, I'll play. If we are allowed to have multiple barrels for a gun:

1. a .357, use .38's for practice (hd) (brand agnostic)

2. a 22lr bolt action rifle for working on form (plinking, practice) (brand agnostic, but I like mossbergs) (cheap will work)

3. a T/C encore or CVA Optima elite with: (350 for the optima with 1 centerfire barrel, barrels are about 200 each)
1 .50 cal Muzzle loading barrel (just for the experience)
1 .308 win., 30 -06, or 300 win mag barrel (big game, varmiting)
1 .223 or 243 barrel (varmiting)
1 12 Ga barrel (water fowl, game)

4. a mossberg 500 (HD, trap, hunting) (300 for this setup right now)
1 smooth bore with full, mod, and cyl chokes
1 rifled barrel for slugs

5. .50 BMG (why the heck not??) (hey, a guy can dream can't he.... the top four cover all needs and can be done for around 1200 total if you only have one centerfire barrel on the optima)

If we can't have multiple barrels
1. any .357/.38 (hd / range fun)
2. Mossberg 500 with a smooth bore (HD, hunting, trap) (about $200)
3. any .22lr or .22 mag (to work on technique, short range varmiting, plinking) (about $150)
4. savage 110 .308 or 30-06 or 7mm mag (big game hunting, long range target) (about $400)
5. .223 or .243 for varmiting
again, your five guns very well could end up less than $1200 dollars, especially if you are willing to use iron sights.

1.) 12-gauge Shotgun, Mossberg 500 for the versatility and customization
2.) .22LR Savage Mk II, or comparable bolt action rifle in same caliber for small game and practice
3.) .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle, Large Game and long range
4.) Handgun in whatever caliber you feel most comfortable with, your carry gun
5.) AR, SKS, AK-47 ect. Assault Rifle in whatever caliber you feel is the most fun and affordable. This one is for target blasting fun and maybe serious business if things really go south in your neighborhood (apologizes to the real south but saying SHTF was redundant).

Thats my wishlist, so far I've acquired #1 and am working on #2 with the money im making this summer.

Interesting thread... I used this sort of thinking in selecting my guns that I *need* and then the rest are just for fun..

Medium semi (S&W 410S)
Mossberg 12g
Hunting rifle (30/30 and Mosin)
AR-15
10/22

Others lost in boating accident....

22MAG revolver
small carry gun

But then what?

I want a garand and 1911....

1) .22 semi rifle - Marlin 60 or ruger 10/22
2) Offensive rifle - AR15 in .223 or AK/SKS(w/Tapco 20rd'rs)
3) Bolt-Action - .308 w/good glass - Savage,Ruger,Rem, Brng,etc.
4) Pump Shotgun - Moss 500 or Rem 870 in 12ga.
5) Defensive handgun - 9mm,40,45,357sig/mag of a quality brand pistol you shoot well.

Hmm. Based on what I have and what I plan to get:

.17 HMR bolt rifle. A much better option for small game hunting than the .22lr. CZ452 being my preference, with a good scope.

.243 bolt rifle. Suitable for pretty much everything that the .17 HMR can't kill. Howa 1500 is my choice, based on it being inexpensive, accurate and reliable.

9mm pistol. For home defence, range shooting and gun games. Glock 17. It is the jack of all trades gun.

.22 handgun: S&W model 18.

Centerfire revolver: S&W model 66. If concealed carry is an option, then swap this for a model 642.

I'm not a fan of shotgun shooting, so I have left these out. The above list will provide for most hunting, self defence and plinking scenarios, with some gun games thrown in.

A more outdoors oriented 5-gun starter package for a person who is likely to hunt in TN or KY:

...(hunting, home defense, protection and/or practice).

22 rifle; Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60. I’d choose the Marlin.
Remington Model 700 243 win for combination varmint and whitetail hunting
This would be modified to 270-308-30-06 for whitetail hunting and 223 for varmint hunting (two rifles) or stictly the 270-308-30-06 for deer hunting and no varmint hunting.
Smith Model 17 or 18 22 revolver (or 617), or Ruger Mark III w/5.5" bull barrel
Remington 870 12ga with 26-28” barrel and screw in chokes or carry gun such as a Smith 642 if you are unlikely to hunt small game.
Smith or Ruger 357 mag revolver (5” 686 or 4” GP100)

There is a difference between being a shooter and being a hunter. Hunters are often both.

The choices really depend on the job(s) the guns are expected to perform, just as if someone asked which 5 tools to choose. A circular saw won't be much use fixing a sink. Even qualifying the question as pertaining to someone just getting into firearms requires knowledge of what their goals are. If they have no idea what their ultimate goal is, then three may suffice - .22 pistol, .22 rifle and 20 or 12 Ga shotgun. Experience with these three could then lead to definition of their ultimate shooting/collecting goals.

I'm happy with the three I own - Ruger GP100, 12 GA Remington 1100, and M1 Garand. Future Acquisitions will be for my wife (to go with her Remington 870) and will depend on her shooting interests.

A good semi-auto rifle for all around, a good bolt action rifle to reach out and touch em, a good shotgun for up close, a good large-frame/mid-frame pistol as your primary sidearm and a good back-up weapon on your vest or on your anklefor ALL HELL SHTF.

Here are my picks, in order of importance with what I'd choose from my collection to fill each roll:

1) Major caliber carry gun. (XD45C)

2) 12 Gauge Shotgun. (Winchester 1200, 28" full choke.)

3) .22 Rifle with a quality scope. (Ruger 10/22)

4) Battle/Hunting Rifle with optic. (Saiga .308)

5) .22 Pistol for lots and lots of cheap practice. (Ruger 22/45)

I think those would cover all the bases well in just about any situation. If you lived in one of the ginormous cities and pretty much never left it you'd probably be well served to trade the .22 rifle for a New York backup of #1 and get the .22 pistol 3rd. Your results may vary.....

Remington 870- hunting/home defense
Ruger 10/22- Squirrels/soda can plinking
Remington 700 .270 big game hunting
Ruger p95 9mm self defense
Ruger .38 special revolver for ccw

Can you guess which gun companies I like?
