Seeking opinions on what you would buy & why for one of the following (money ain't growin on trees for me right now but I still feel like getting something):

1) Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag (50+ yrd target shooting & hunting).
2) Ruger SP101 in .357 mag 3" barrel (alternative CCW).
3) Ruger/S&W/Savage/etc. base model AR-15 (target shooting; still don't have an AR in my collection but not a huge fan of the cartridge).
4) Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt (replace one of my Uberti CAS revolvers).
5) Marlin 1895 in 45-70 (target & hunting).

I know this selection looks a bit random. I plan on getting something in each category, but am ambivalent about where to start. Suggestions on alternatives are welcome, but no semi-auto pistols please (I have plenty already), and nothing way more expensive than what I list (I know Daniel Defense makes an awesome AR, but I'm not payin for that).

Thanks guys

I'd say Super Redhawk cuz I don't have a 44 mag.

45-70 would be fun too. Do you load your own? If not, the SP101 is the only one of those that won't eat up a lot of money to feed.

Yep I roll my own; thanks for your input.

Hate the look of the Super Redhawk.
Own the SP101.(2.25")
Own an AR that NEVER gets shot.
The Vaquero just seemed too...big

Hands down the 1895 Marlin 45-70 for me.

Cool, then your options are wide open.

I've got an SP101 in 357. It's a handy gun.

I agree with Mn Fats, I too hate the look of the Super Redhawk. I prefer the regular old Redhawk. However, if you are going to mount optics, the Super is a way better option.

1) Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag (50+ yrd target shooting & hunting).
Good choice. I have one and like it. Lots of fun... Great for reloaders and bullet casters..

2) Ruger SP101 in .357 mag 3" barrel (alternative CCW).
I like the gun and the cartridge but it's bulkier then I like for CCW.

3) Ruger/S&W/Savage/etc. base model AR-15 (target shooting; still don't have an AR in my collection but not a huge fan of the cartridge).
You could get one in another chambering but 5.56 is hard to beat for target shooting....

4) Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt (replace one of my Uberti CAS revolvers).
Nice gun.. Don't have one but i'd like one...

5) Marlin 1895 in 45-70 (target & hunting).
Lots of fun. Have one and if you reload it can go from mild to wild... One of my favs... Good choice, especially if you reload and cast bullets...

Tough call. AR in oddball caliber would be my choice from your list. I am a Ruger DA hater though and refuse to own anything newer than a Six series gun. The marlin is an attractive option, but too many horror stories about the GG and Remlin quality issues for my blood. My choice on a classy classic lever gun is a Henry. If you were to be open to Other revolvers, I would lean real hard towards one of these 3:
-Taurus 66 if you can forget that it’s a Taurus
-Rossi Cyclops if you can forget that it’s a better Taurus product
-Smith 586, older gun. Preferably pre-Obama administration production.

You have it right. #1 is the top choice.

I also waited a looooong time to get a .223/AR. They are super fun and cheap. Did I mention they are cheap? You can get a Ruger AR556 for what, $500 on sale at Buds......can't beat that price/quality ratio with a stick.
Plus they virtually give away high quality PMAGS and ammo ain't too pricey either.

Also not a Super RH fan- much prefer the regular Redhawk. Have you seen the new 8-shot .357 RedHawks? Pretty cool.

Ive got an SP101. Good luck finding a stronger pocket pistol! But, its heavy and I only carry it during jacket weather OWB. Still a great gun.

Can't comment on the Vaquero or Marlin- my taste in lever guns runs to old Savages. If you don't have one yet, I highly recommend tracking one down. They are awesome!

So, for this list I would say:
1) AR
2)Redhawk
3)Savage M99
4)SP101
Good luck!

That's a tough one. I'd probably go with the 45-70 since you reload.

But an AR is a fun toy.

And as a guy who prefers handguns, I'd say I also like the sound of a 357, 44, or 45 wheelgun.

Basically, I can't help ya... Sorry haha

I love revolvers, bolt actions and big bore lever rifles so I would personally go with one of those. I CCW an sp101 myself, and have developed and affinity for single actions as of recent.

Even with that said, you state you don't have an AR, and it sounds like you have a hunting rifle and a ccw already coverd. So an AR fills the empty role . Varmints, home defense, plinking, just a good general purpose gun. And they are cheap right now. You say youre not a fan of the cartridge, but they come on other flavors than .223/5.56. if I was in your shoes the AR would get my money. Than aquire the rest over time.

That's an interesting list. Comparing the options against what I already have and enjoy shooting, I'd probably opt for the Super Redhawk. A 7.5-inch SRH is one of the guns I regret parting with. I would buy another if I didn't already have a 7.5-inch SBH Hunter.

A JM Marlin 1895CB .45-70 is on my watch-for list; none of the rest of those mentioned are.

I have everything on the list except the Vaquero but I do have a 41 mag Blackhawk so pretty close.
As others have mentioned, the Ruger SRH isn't the prettiest revolver but it's a very good one. I have an Ultra Dot Match on mine and have shot several deer with it.
The SP101 3 inch is a fine revolver with somewhat limited in usefulness. It's heavy for a 5 shot carry gun. The 3 inch barrel isn't legal for deer hunting in my state and limits the performance of 357 loads. 38 special is the most economical of the choices to shoot.
Multiple options of calibers available if you want an AR but for varmint hunting and targets, 223 is hard to beat.
My 45-70 guide gun is a lot of fun to shoot and load for. Since the 45-70 became legal for deer in Iowa a bunch of Marlin 1895's have been bought here. I have not heard about any quality issues locally.

I would buy the AR since you don't have one. To me, revolvers don't make sense for most applications. This is due to the cost of the guns and the ammunition, along with the reduced capacity. The only exception would be magnum revolvers for protection against bears, or big game hunting during a handgun-only season. As for the 45-70, outside of using it to hunt in a state restricted to straight-wall cartridges, I just don't see a point to it either, given the more modern rounds available (at a lower cost) that are more pleasant to shoot and have a flatter trajectory. Again, just my opinion. I have a 308 and I am toying with the idea of a 6.5 CM. For a hunting sidearm, I have a Glock 21 (45 ACP, 13 rounds) and a Glock 23 (40 S&W, 13 rounds). Its hard for me to imagine any hunting scenario in the lower 48 where i wouldn't have "enough gun".

Still yet another "not a big fan of the Super Redhawk". Would prefer a Redhawk or Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag.

Likewise I have never really cared for the SP101 (or the GP100 for that matter). Would rather have a S&W J frame with a 3" barrel.

Can't go wrong with any one of those ARs you have listed. If you don't like .223 there's lots more calibers to chose from.

Love my Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt; same goes for my Beretta Stampede. Lots of fun shooting them too and easy to reload for.

Always wanted (but never really needed), a Marlin Model 1895. Would look for an older used one if this is up for consideration.

If I didn't already own an AR, that would be next, while they're still cheaper.

Since I do already have one, I'd pick the Vaquero from that list to be my next, since I've already been considering it, but I'd get it in .357 instead.
