I own a P220 Platinum, an M&P 45 and several 1911's. The most accurate of course would be my 1911's and most of those are heavily modified. I was surprised that my M&P45 was able to group better than my P220... It just didn't seem to stand to reason that this light polymer pistol could be as accurate as steel, but at least in my case, it is.
If you want a superb non-1911 shooter, take a real close look at the M&P45.
Well, as much as surprise to me as it might for you, but I just bought an MP45c and after 200-300 rounds was routinely making groups (freestyle, 12 yds) as tight or tighter than with my P220 Elite Stainless. It could have been the mood in the air or how much coffee I did or didn't have...for me it's a toss up with nearly any gun and I'd never blame the gun until I really did some shooting.
What I know for a fact is that I could grab any gun out of the case and, for self defense purposes, the gun's inherent accuracy is not a factor in hitting the target. They're all far more accurate that is needed if I can make a single hole with them at 12 yards. JMO.
On the one hand, asking about the accuracy achievable out of non-1911s is snicker worthy in its own right, but I have seen a few impressive SIG 220s in my day and I saw a M&P45 at the range the other week that could earn a "accuracy bang for the buck" award.
