I went to a beach in Rhode Island yesterday and noticed a very interesting thing while people watching. I'm not sure how to tell this story without sounding like a perv, but here it goes.

A group of friends, my fiance and I decided to hit the beach yesterday as it was a nice hot sunny day. We pack for the day and my fiance loves to be right near the ocean, which is fine by me as I get a better view that way if you know what I mean.

Anyway, as I'm sitting in my beach chair watching people as this guy walks by me on my left. (Ok, this is the perv part) My fiance always says I notice everything and I guess for the most part I do. As the guy is walking by I glance at him and immediately note that his bathing suit just doesn't seem right some how in the front. He was by me in a second and I forgot about it as other interesting people were walking by.

After a while I notice the same guy coming out of the ocean and heading towards me. As he gets closer it's immediately obvious that his bathing suit is imprinting on the handle of something on his right side. I immediatly think to myself, DAMN, the guy is carrying his CCW. As he was about to pass me it was even more obvious. The guy must have noticed me at that point as he put his hand right over the handle and pulled his suit away from it as he went past.

Ok now I'm all for CCWing, but really, how far is to far when making sure your safe? In the OCEAN????? :what: I'm hoping he had the thing in a zip lock bag or something to keep the salt water away from it. If not, that handgun will be toast REAL fast.

You have to watch out for those jellyfish, they're almost as bad as the zombies. :p

Hmmm.... SmartCarry, eh? I wonder which gun can take that kind of abuse.

Seriously, it's a good thing that beaches in Rhode Island are crime-free.

Many people are simply GUN OBSESSED. If we are all honest on this board, all of us are to some extent. Some of the more ridiculous things I have heard is how people agonize over if they should carry to weddings, first dates, and the doctors office.

They are hyper prepared in some areas and bare naked in others. My trips to the gunshow and ranges has shown me that most have not done a situp or push up in 20 years. How unprepared is that?

Guns are popular because they are a thing to fixate on and can be purchased without any self discipline. That is our culture.

To be the (rare for me anyway :p ) voice of reason here, it might have been an insulin pump or some other sort of medical device that you need to wear at all times.

Thankfully for us CCW types, there are plenty of odd shaped bulges on people's belts these days (cell phone, pager, ipod, etc) that it just helps with our camoflage. However there are very few that need to be worn in the ocean :what: .

At first I thought it had to be something else as well. Didn't know what, but I was doubting that someone would wear a handgun in the ocean. Until he was close. You could definitely make out the handle. It looked like a small J frame or something close to that. You could make out part of the finger groove as well.

Time for the really bulky bermuda shorts style trunks. Imagine trying to conceal in a Speedo! I do have to comment that years ago, I was told some California officers liked Raven 25 autos for beach attire...concealeble and non rusting with that zinc alloy. Plus, if the internals DID rust, who cared? Buy another $50 Raven next day.
If I had to, I use a stainless revolver in a plastic baggie in some sort of Thunderwear rig under the biggest baggiest shorts/trunks i could find, IF I was planning on getting wet. Since, as a former Navy type, getting INTO the ocean generally meant Bad Things Were Happening, I would just use what I have now under those self same super baggies, and kick back under an umbrella with a Dr Pepper....

Well, there are mods that allow a Glock to shoot under water. Maybe the guy is really scared of sharks.

It's funny. I just came back from vacation, and was mentioning to a cop/firearms instructor I know pretty well that I was surprised to see metal detectors at the main gate at an amusement park we went to. He asked what I did about it, and I told him we were heading to thw water park with the kids, so I wasn't carrying. He gave me a butt chewing, and told me to look into a Kel-Tec, or a Beretta Inox .32, so I wouldn't have such troubles.

I know Rule #1 of gunfighting is "Have a gun," but come on.

I carry a gun all day, every day, every where. Until I can accurately predict the future so I know when, where and how I will need to defend myself or my family I will have a gun on me. That doesn’t make paranoid; it makes me prepared.

You think it might've been a colostomy bag and he was embarassed that you'd noticed it? I don't think RI is big on CCW.

ShackleMeNot,

I don't intend to dissparage your choice, but do you carry a weapon while swimming? Running? Ever play softball with the guys from work, or golfing? Carry then? Go out for a day on the boat, cruising around with some friends? Ride a JetSki?

I think some of us choose to participate in activities that do not allow for CCW, do to comfort, safety (try sliding into second with a handgun carried IWB...ouch!), or out-and-out practicality. That would include the nudist thread above.

It's all about choices...

I wouldn't for a second dump my pump in salt water. OTOH, I see your point.

I do think some people take it too far, but if it isn't hurting anyone, I don't see a problem.

I'm glad I cannot imagine a time when I'd feel threatened enough to carry while swimming at the beach.

+1 to dave3006, I think it's important to be prepared physically if you're able, and this keeps you healthier anyway. Now if only I could stay away from fast food.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that bulge on Bush's back during the debates was a S&W 642 . . .

jmm

Personal choice to me. Maybe the guy was defending our beaches from The Base, or on a drug sting, or had received threats, or just wanted to carry a gun--fine by me anyway.

+3 to want dave'06 sez. Dan Flory commented to me at a gun show in Indy once that the very same guys worried about zombie bears and the UN should just look down and see their biggest threat--their food blisters! :uhoh:

Except for the water sports, yes.

I carry every day. I come home, the kids crawl all over me. We roll around in the grass or on the carpet. I go to the grocery store, the convenience store, the electronics store. I go on a friend's boat, or play frisbee in the park.

I take responsibility for my own safety all the time, not just when it's convenient.

(Oh, and with a SmartCarry, it's almost always convenient. And I carry a full-size 9mm with 15+1 and a spare mag.)

sharks are kind of scary. they have a lot of teeth.

I do carry when I do all those things.

I golfed last week with my in-laws and carried my Glock 19 IWB the entire time. I carried a Glock 26 on a 5 day 60 mile back country hiking trip in GNP. I carry when I mountain bike. I carry when I climb. I carry when I walk my 4 week old son around the block in my sleepy, little neighborhood.

You're right. It is all about choices. I choose to be able to defend myself regardless of how "safe" someone else thinks my location or current activity is.

all i know is that i would never admit to checking out another mans package. i might glance at it, but i wouldnt study it so intensely to determine theres the handle of something that might be gun shaped inside there.

:neener: :D
