When you can't carry, do you carry pepper spray?

I carry all the time, where legal. My girlfriend works in a Hospital ER. They have a no firearms policy so at work she carries Fox pepper spray.

I do not. I find it messy and haphazard. ... but I also have 23 years of martial arts practice and carry a knife - that I know how to fight with.

Yes. I have had a bad experience on BART and want at least minimal resource.

Four men came onto BART and began an outrageous farce of con games. They had three different games going (the two I remember are the pigeon drop and shell game) and were putting on pressure to the point that they could just as well demanded money.

Guess the phony con game front is supposed to make theft less illegal?

In any event, I am guessing that this non athletic 160 pounder would have had trouble punching out 4 gangsta types all over 190 pounds and focused.

Carry both all the time!

I don't carry spray as much as I should and I wouldn't suggest not carrying even when you do carry a gun. Think about it, why pull your gun when you can pull pepper spray instead? In most cases pepper spay alone is enough to drive away an attacker and if that doesn't work then pull your gun to stop someone. Besides that it looks a lot better to the officers on scene when they see that you first tried non-lethal force before resorting to lethal, it looks a lot betterin court as well. That's my thoughts on the issue, I just need to start taking my own advice a little better:uhoh:

Nope. For less-than-lethal situations I don't really need it. For deadly force situations I wouldn't trust it.

Some of you are saying that you ALWAYS carry a gun. Does this mean that you NEVER enter an area where guns are illegal (airport, bar, post office, etc.)? Or, do you ignore the law and carry anyway?

I agree.

For less-than-lethal situations I don't really need it.
What other method do you use?

When I can't carry, I carry, anyway.
In essence, you avoid all areas where it is illegal to carry a gun OR you break the law?

I live in CA, so yes, I carry pepper spray every day. It's in a case on the shoulder strap of my computer / messenger bag

No, I don't but this thread has me motivated again to get a fresh supply (me, wife and sister). One thing that bugs me is I always forget how long I've had it and long it is really good for. So I think this starts me to second guessing it.

Cheers

Yes.....I carry gun AND Fox Labs OC all the time.

I think its a great idea to have a less-lethal solution to your problems when carrying a firearm. Sometimes you cant run....but the other guy doesnt need to die.

There are very few places I go that the pistol is not on me. But, when it must stay in the vehicle, one flavor or another of OC (sometimes 2) usually goes with me. Fox stream unit, ASP Key Defender and/or semi-new Kimber 2-shot unit.

Haha, pepper spray. If the situation is severe enough to mace someone, then it in likely severe enough to draw a handgun. Basically, the only thing I would spray at thier face is lead, if forced to.

I live in one of the safest cities in the US, so I am not as vigilant as I should be. There just aren't a lot of creepy situations near me, and I stay out of the few parts of town where there might be. The nice parts are also the safe parts.

We do carry spray, sometimes, though, and we've vowed to carry it more consistently.

WRT non-lethal, followed by lethal force, I wonder if it couldn't cut both ways, though. "Pepper-spraying someone then finishing him off with a bullet" -- that's how the prosecutor or the plaintiff's lawyer would describe it -- might not look so good, either.

Do you carry pepper spray?
No, never, when I'm out and about (-- unless I'm working, in which case my employer requires me to have it handy).

Mr McGavin, you may want to check the RCWs and the WACs if you're a Washington resident ... You stated

Better check your definition of "illegal." You certainly can carry in the airport when you're picking up or dropping off someone (so long as you don't go into the secured terminal areas); you can even carry in school zones here when you're dropping off or picking up your kids ...post office? Even if the law on that was clear (it's not), use your local UPS store -- same services, friendlier service, shorter lines. In WA, you can't pack in bars or the lounges in restaurants or Indian casinos, no big deal ... or in mental hospitals, jails/prisons, military bases, federal buildings and courthouses. But you can pack in the state Capitol Building, did you know that?

Bottom line, I guess, is that most of us who do carry daily, probably don't often need to go into places where we can't carry.

So as far as that goes, is there really a need to carry pepper spray if you can't carry a firearm? All things considered, this is a pretty safe state (unless you have pressing business in the Hilltop area of Tacoma after dark or hang around in Pioneer Square after the clubs close). If I'm going somewhere where I thought I'd need pepper spray, I'd also want a firearm.

I too have quite a few years of Martial Arts training and carry an assisted opening pocket knife (Kershaw Spec Bump). If you want "less than lethal" treatment than try to victimize someone else.

I have this lil pack .. GREAT PRICE RIGHT NOW!!! 27.00 for the whole package!! i tried getting this on another site and it was 69.99..

These products are worthless junk and should not be confused with actual Tasers which actually work. I've been voluntarily shocked by a 100,000 volt device. It stun, it also did not stop my advance and I am not Superman.

As far as pepperspray goes, I don't usually carry it. Anyplace here that restricts CCW restricts all weapons including OC. I do carry a small can of OC when I run; it's for dogs and it works great.

I've had some respiratory issues since going back into my apartment two weeks after Katrina. (Stupid mold!) Pepper spray is not an option for me. If someone is dumb or desperate enough to jump me at work or anywhere else I can't carry, they get to learn about steel toed boots and the application of the same. I do carry a fairly serious pocket knife, and am somewhat less clueless than most about how to use it as a weapon (but nowhere near an expert!), but I really don't need the legal hassles involved with using it that way. (HINT: Juries associate knife use more with the Sharks & the Jets than with law abiding citizens.)
