I found some around here. Unfortunately, I wasn't willing to pay for some of their prices. A consignment for a used 1894C, "Not too old, it has the newer safety", the individual wanted within $40 of the New price. Around $540. He wasn't budging. He snickered and said he'll get the money he wants. There were also a couple of 1894C at 2 big box stores. Cabelas has the 1894C in stock for $579 (not negotiable) and sportsman's warehouse has the 1894CSS in stock for $649. Add another $35-$40 for tax, and you're at over $600 for the 1894C and $690 for the CSS. Sorry, but they aren't worth that to me.
I did however run into a Rossi M92. 24" stainless steel octagon barrel. Got it new for $500. Some people said that some places online are as low as $470 and in the retail store for as high as $575. So I feel I did OK. I checked with 4 different online, who like everyone else was out of stock. He admitted that while the price listed was their most recent price when in stock; that they will most likely up the price if they get them back in stock. He said that 357 mag lever actions will probably start selling for a lot closer to suggest retail prices.
Most of them agreed that part of shortage has to do with a rising interest in CAS and amateur interest in cowboy type guns. Also; with the cost of ammo, the 38spl is a lot less expensive to shoot than the 30-30 or 35 rem.
Here's a bad pic, but I like the gun. I initially wanted the 1894C, but besides the price, they ONLY make the 357 mag in an 18" barrel. The gun felt way too small to me. I would love a 20" like my model 336 30-30, but that wasn't going to happen with a Marlin. But so far, I'm quite happy with the Rossi. Their quality has improved a lot of the years, and many CAS shooters talk highly of the Rossi series.
