Hey guys...

I bought some ammo at Dicks Sporting Goods, but paid $9 for 50 9mm remingtons...

Is there a place online I can buy some cheap ammo for the range?

Also what would you recommend for home defense, in hollow point? is remington good?

Thanks :)

I've bought from here: www.outdoormarksman.com

Their prices are quite good. You can also try www.ammoman.com as I've heard good things about them.

But unless you're buying in large quantities, it might be better to buy local. Wal Mart sells Winchester White Box 100-count boxes for $13.00, it's hard to beat that. The weight, therefore shipping, of ammo is what drives the cost of it up when you buy online.

As for self-defense, I would recommend going out and buying a couple boxes of different SD ammo and putting it through your gun to make sure that it feeds and ejects properly before I would trust my life to it.

thank you.

I am still quite new to all of this and had not yet had the opportunityu to shoot any defenseive ammo trhough the gun. i will do as you suggested and try several brands to see which is best. ;)

I forgot to welcome you to the Forum. Welcome and feel free to ask questions. If you let us know your location, perhaps we can help you locate some local shops.

A few of my favorite SD rounds:

Federal Hydrashock
Winchester SXT
Winchester Ranger

cheap ammo

I just bought a bunch of .223 (Lake city M855) and .308( LC M80) from Ammoman.com.The price was better than cheaper than dirt, for the same ammo, and if you pick it up at the store it's cheaper yet.
They are nice folks to deal with.

I keep a list on LJ Guns

Let me know if you have good or bad comments on any of them and I'll update it.

It's here.

In case you can't read it I reproduce it here but it will get stale in time

Heres a list I've cobbled together. Got FMJ?

Reviews and additions? Comment. :)

I try to keep this updated. I will move a supplier from 'unknown' to 'known' with enough comments. That is for service not price.

I ordered from http://www.wideners.com/ (located in TN) last month. Placed order on a Friday, they shipped on Monday (next business day) via UPS ground. It was very well packed, box within a box, and no extra charge for the effort, only the UPS fee.

mrmeval has a great list of online vendors but one thing that needs to be considered is how far away is the vendor shipping point. Ammo is typically shipped by UPS or FedEx and the freight charges can make a big difference in the final cost.

Both UPS and FedEx use zones for calculation shipping charges so you may find a cheaper unit price at one place but the shipping can make the price higher than some other place that shows a higher cost but less freight.

Also, some of these vendors will not ship to certain states due to laws in that state.

For target ammo, I buy Miwall ammo from www.outdoormarksman.com They have reloaded 9mm 115gr bulk pack at great prices in 500 or 1000 round ammo cans.

For personal defense ammo, that can be a tough choice. As mentioned you should try different brands to see what works best in your pistol. Reliability as well as accuracy has to be considered. Some pistols will "like" one type of round over another so it's very important to see what works best. It can get expensive to test ammo but if you spent say $500 on a pistol, what's another couple hunderd to insure your safetry and that of your family?

Personally, I use Remington Golden Saber 124gr +P in my Ruger P98 for home defense. I shot about 350 rounds through it with zero failures of any kind. I had tried Federal HydraShoks and firing the same number of rounds, I had a total of about 5% failures of some type with that stuff.

Thanks George,

I'll need to add where they are to the list. I'll have to find out the different zones and such.

I'm subscribed to this thread so any notes about a vendor will be added to the list.

Thanks

I have ordered ammo from both CTD and SG. Both are pretty competitive. Both have reasonable shipping policies.

I can sometimes get ammo at gun shows for less than online if you consider shipping charges.

keep in mind when buying from ammoman.com that shipping is factored in to the price of his bulk stuff and smaller boxes you need to buy five and there is no shipping. So with them at least there isn't a huge shipping charge that just made it not worth it.

Keep an eye on the Dick's ad in the Sunday papers.

I just bought Remington 50 round 9mm for $6/box. The .45 ACP is usually "on sale" for about $11. They normally knock off a dollar a box if you buy the case

Wally World is still a little cheaper, but I'd rather browse around Dicks than WalMart.
