Hello,

I'm getting my reloading kit back out after about a year away from the hobby, and I realized I need primers and powder. Where is a good place to buy them locally? I'm not planning to buy too much bulk (maybe 1000 primers and 1-2 pounds) so I'm planning to do it over the internet.

Also, what is the going rate these days? Last time I bought supplies it was about $18-20 per 1000 primers or per pound of powder. Last week at Bass Pro I saw some 1 pounders going for as much as $30 which seemed a bit high to me.

Try any of the Carters Country's. They are as fair priced as you will find. The one on Treaschwig seems to have the largest selection.

+1 on Carter's for (usually) having some choices in stock.

I was at Carter's in Pasadena last week and primers are in the $35/1000 range for pistol. Price varies a little based on brand, std. vs. mag, etc. They have some Fiocchi small rifle they must be trying to unload; they are still in the upper $20s - I don't recall exactly as I don't reload small rifle.

The North store may have more selection, but I like the staff at the Pasadena store better. To me, they seem like Hertz rental car: they try harder to help you.

Powder is another story. I waited two months for a pound of 2400 at either the north or Pasadena store. When I was there (Pasadena) the other day, Unique was gone, 2400 was gone, one bottle of Bullseye was left, almost most all Accurate powders were gone, most Wincheter powder was gone, and a bunch of Hodgdon was gone. Lots of IMR there, though. You may be better off putting together an order from powder valley, if you order enough, or get a buddy together and split the haz-mat fees.

Oddly enough I was at BassPro (288 and Beltway) They had a good powder selection including 2400 and a decent variety of bullets. They didn't have much in the way of primers, brass, or actual reloading equipment.

Give a try to a small shooter's shop called The 10 Ring. It's on Jones Rd north of 1960. I was in there a few weeks ago and they had a really good selection of powders at reasonable prices, also had primers and I picked up 3,000 Remington small rifle BR primers for I think $32 per K. Not bad.

They recently moved so you might want to call and get directions to their new location just down the road. Nice people there and helpful.
