I was wondering which ar-15 is best and why? I live in the commy state of ca so i am limited on my options. I really like the smith&wesson m&p15 t but i would like to hear from others on what you think and what the difference is between rifles this will be my first ar-15 and i want a rifle that will last forever I WANT THE 556 CALIBER

I see you are new to the forum. Welcome!

Doing a search will probably reveal hundreds of threads on this exact topic. You can learn a ton about AR-15's just doing a keyword search. I promise.

"Best" is subjective and depends on your needs. What do you want this rifle for?

Thanx for the welcome i want a rifle for home defense and hunting but reliability is most important to me. I have about 1200 to 1500 or so to spend

Glad to have you.

You can do both with one rifle, but HD and hunting are very different activities, requiring different set ups to optimize that particular function. I would honestly recommend a dedicated rifle for each. What do you plan on hunting?

Honestly it's a question of how hard you are going to run it. For a little bit of familiarization and home defense, you can use anything. If you are going to run it hard, train every weekend, compete, go to Thunder Ranch for a carbine course, etc, you will want something more serious. Basic M&Ps are going for about $700. A serious Noveske is going to be more like $2k. And I'm not even going to try to explain what is or is not legal in CA.

i would hunt small deer there is no big deer in this part of the state. i guess i would first like a tactical rifle for if there is ever a red dawn type scenario

If you want a decent scope (glass) with your new rifle, you want to factor that into the buying price. I think Bushmaster is a good rifle, and that would give you plenty leftover to put a nice Leupold on it (around $500) and also buy a case or two of ammo (inexpensive steel-case Russian or a bit more money brass-case reloadable).

The real question is who is going to ship to CA - in black rifles, no one.

Your best shot is to go to a local gun store and ask what they have.

Colt is the standard in AR-15's. It isn't the best in every category, but it is still the rifle that others are measured against. It is very high quality. Not sure they make a CA compliant rifle though.

jim243 i have a ffl guy who will order and put a bullet button on any rifle i'm interested in i'm just trying to find a solid rifle any thoughts on colt

Go to a local shop and buy a lower, then buy a KAC SR-15E3 upper or a Noveske upper. You asked which is best in CA so there you go. :)

In reality, there is no answer to your question, you have to do research, get some experience, then decide which is best.

I'm in the same boat you are, but i don't have the money to spend at the moment because i just bought a bolt .308 & scope :D, however i've given the subject some thought.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Colt. A buddy of mine here in north county has a StagArms & it shoots great(i've put a couple hundred rounds through it). I personally, after reading the following link, am very interested in CMMG. This is a really exhaustive review of several brands, you should take the time to read JWise's write-up; http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?81462-So-you-want-to-buy-an-AR-15-huh

Good luck, let us all know what you end up with!

asahrts if you like cmmg you should go to the poway weapons and gear shop they have alot of them and they are where i purchase my weapons from. real good guys who want you to have exactly what your looking for instead of just pushing a sale on you and if they dont have what you want they will order it for you
