Some friends (a couple) asked to borrow a rifle to deal with coyotes or coydogs hanging around their house. They wanted something with light recoil, so I let them try out three of my rifles today. Maximum engagement range is about 70 yards.

Which of the three would you select?

I think that a lighter caliber varmint rifle is the way to go, .223 is a good place to consider, i think so at least. you might even try an SKS. I hope to go coyote hunting with an SKS as soon as I can get ahold of one :)

Assuming you are patient enough to call them into close range, any will do the trick.

I will be using .308 168 grain in my Savage 10FP. Why? Practice, practice, practice.

BTW, have any of you ever watched one of the many coyote varminting videos on the market? I get the feeling from the poor shot placement I've seen all too often that they spend more time practicing calling than they do shooting. :(

I would have gone with the .223 myself, but my friends chose the M1 Carbine. They shot all three well enough, but loading the lever rifle was problematic for the wife because of her nails, and the husband was put off by the appearance of the Colt!:banghead: I'm going to have to explain a few things to him soon, but yesterday I just let it go.

So I loaned them the Carbine, two 15-round mags, and a box of Winchester 110gr HSPs.

Rick, I don't think calling them in will be an issue. My friends told me the varmints come within 50 yards of the house. I agree, any of these cartridges would work.
