^^ Yep, I'd think about a .22 too. You will be able to afford to shoot it when you may not have much cash.

I guess the folks recommending a .22LR missed the part about the OP wanting a rifle that he could hunt deer with.

I graduated High School. Mostly it will be used as a range toy, maybe a bit of close range deer hunting(Less than 150 yards).
Awesome. Welcome to the "real" world. It's scary here.

I voted Arsenal. Only gun on your wish list I'd wholly trust to save my bacon without worrying whether or not it's up to snuff. I know it is. Confidence in your tool inspires better use of said tool in my mind.

An AR wouldn't be a bad choice. I just get tired of chasing around things to customize. For some, it's fun. For me, I always get suckered into another couple hundred on an already expensive rifle. I'd rather it be one and done from the box.

I do deer hunt with .223, but out of a bolt. AR15, I'm assuming, means 556/.223, putting you farther down the rabbit hole should you decide .223 isn't adequate for deer (to each his own) and you want a 6.8 or 300blk. Now things are hurting the wallet.

Feel blessed you have money and a choice. My graduation present was a 1965 Chevy Malibu, that barely ran. Ugh.

Arsenal.

VZ-24. One of the finest Mauser rifles ever made and still reasonably priced. Get a nice South American contract rifle in 7x57 that's still full military and get the best possible.

I like the Savage 243 with the Accra stock and trigger. They are a very good target gun and hunting gun. Around 625.00 that way you will have money to buy a scope and ammo to shoot.----GOOD LUCK

Any of those are fun to shoot. A flat top AR will give the most accuracy with good optics especially at longer ranges. The Ar will cost a little more to buy and shoot, but every part is easily upgradable and you can build them anyway you want. The AK is cheap fun. Scope mounting is a problem, receiver cover mounts are pretty loose, side mounts are better but not great. You can't go very wrong with either for plinking. If you want to hunt varmint s the AR is best. If the AR is legal for deer in your state I'd recommend it. But the AK can kill big deer too. I've used both with good results.

I voted for the AR, since you are 19 and will be able to shoot it fairly well, with a little instruction. Also, you're sure to lust after one sooner or later. However, I also go along with you holding onto your cash and when the perfect rifle appears, you can get it. Unless you have to have it now, we all know that feeling, I'd wait..

If you don't know, then get an AR-15. It can be a range gun, hunting tool, or fighting weapon. Many calibers are available. The best part is that you can easily modify it to meet your needs.

I've thought about it a bit and I've decided to just go with the original gun I wanted, which was the VZ-58. I'm going to wait to see if J&G sales has them on sale again or maybe I can pick one up on Armslist or gun broker. Plus if I get a CAI I won't be spending all my money so then I can save some to buy ammo for it :D Thanks to everyone for their opinion.

I just voted VZ58 so you won't look like one of those posters that asks for advice and starts a poll, then ignores the 49.35% telling you to get an AR. :p

Excellent choice. Really.

I actually picked up a czechpoint vz58 in great condition on gun broker today for $645 shipped to my ffl. I'll post a range report when I get it. Thanks again for the opinions and advice.

Shooting .22 is more expensive than .50BMG - 4-5 round any I am dome, with .22 ( .22lr vz.58 conversion) I can shoot 500-600 round per hour and still cannot stop shooting...

And while 7,62x39 cost just twice more, its much more Joules for your money;)

Sa vz.58 all the way.

Arsenal AK for the win. Because AKs have class, character, that is devoid in AR-15s. An AK makes a statement and Arsenal makes a good AK, so it gets my vote. The AK is as accurate as it needs to be

It seems a lot of people are trying to turn their rifles into SMGs these days. Some of us still expect our rifles to be able to do real rifle things. This isn't an option with the poodle shooter. It doesn't matter how many rails or thousands of dollars worth of optics, lights, and lasers you put on your AR-15, it'll never be a real rifle. It sounds like a cartoon and feels like a toy to me.

I'd endorse an M1A, but the Minis are bastard abominations. How Ruger took a rifle known for its accuracy and realiability and from this rifle created a rifle known for neither of those, I'll never know.

The CETME is an interesting choice and would get my 2nd place vote, followed by the VZ58.

AR. Most versatile platform.

Besides, you can't touch a HK-91 at below $1k.

Actually a guy I know sold one earlier this year for $825 to pay for some college textbooks, but I wasn't in the market at the time. He sold it in two days.

I won't take anyone as serious who refers to the AR15 as a "poodle shooter." Good grief. :(

Of the options you list, I'd prefer the AR15 if cost were no concern. However, if you'd rather stick to $500, an AK variant is a good choice. I bought a Polish underfolder a year ago for about that amount, and I have loved it. Don't limit yourself to just the WASR and Arsenal, as those are basically the top and bottom of the spectrum. There are lots of good examples in between those two price points.

Why no Saiga 7.62x39 on the list?

Starts life as an very inexpensive, fun to shoot rifle with marginal accuracy. Magically converts to a really nice AK-47 variant with marginal accuracy.

AR-15's are even more popular now than ever, if that's possible but as someone mentioned, they seem to be money magnets.

Ask me how I know on both.
