Went to a local store to fondle and eye a Walther p22 to have as another plinker. Noticed a Mosquito also and fell in love at first sight. Felt right, nice sights, good weight for a "fun gun". Who has one and can tell me, is it worth the money? Does it shoot a good group? I'm not looking for a target gun, but I do want to hit what I aim at. Opinions, praises and gripes...tell me what you think. Thanks.

Wow... $249!?

Here in MD, where all guns cost a premium, the same P22 is more like at least $400 or so at my local gunshop.

Not even at the gun shows will you find so low a price. I'm envious!

Looked at one here for $325. It's the "newest" version of the piece. Several people here own early ones and report alot of feed troubles and other reliability issues. Two fellows at my range bought the newest versions and I did have a chance to run 50rnds through one without any troubles at all. My wife REALLY wants one, so it's just a matter of time before we pick one up at this point. It's like a little P226, so it appeals to me in alot of ways as well. Just need to make sure I get a "good one".

Is there a way to tell new version from old?

From what I've been told at this point is the serial # range. I plan on asking around to confirm this prior to making the purchase. The two I observed that were trouble-free are much higher serial #'s than some of the trouble ones I've seen. I was debating on calling SIG directly and asking, but I'm unsure how upfront they might be when asking about such things.

Check out www.rimfirecentral.com for good info.

I hadn't heard that Sig fixed the bugs. Most agree that the P22 has been "fixed" for what it is worth. Local gun store claims they receive several complaints on the Sig but sell the P22's like hot cakes.

I bought a P22 and have been pleased. It is not a Ruger or Browning....but it filled a niche. I wanted a lightweight plinker for backpacking. It is a lot more fun than a Beretta 21A (I think that's the small model).

I own both and never had a lick of trouble with either. Both have fed anything I've put in them, and I mostly shoot Winchester Super X, as I have a lot of it on hand.

They both shoot about the same and are plenty accurate enough for plinking. The P22 has a better DA trigger, and I think this is mostly due to the SIG's trigger shape. The SIG's trigger is also heavier, but really not all that bad.

I won one at a local gun club raffel, I got it in January, It doesn't like standard velocity Federals, buy shoots great w/ Remington hi-speeds. It is a really cool 22 though. I haven't had any feed problems. I'd probably buy this gun if I didn't win it.

I bought one about a month ago and have shot about 500 rounds through it and have had very few problems. I have shot the Aguila SSS 60 gr. round and it feed fine it also feed fine with the Aguila Colibri. I like the feel better than the P-22. Great little gun.

I have two p-22's one a short barrel the other a long barrel, paid $199 each for them, plus tax. The sig mosquito feels ok, shoots ok, runs eh. mine had too many feed issues, bought a new mag, tried that, it ran better but not 100% My brother bought it from me, knowing the issues because it fit his hand. He spent a lot of time on it and now it runs 100%. He wore out two cratex rods making everything slick. Supposedly, the new ones are much better, but unless I could get a real it runs or I get my money back from sig type of guarantee, I would not buy one.

Seems like I have read that both the P22 and the Sig have zinc die cast slides. If this is true, then :barf: . Die cast slides do not belong on a REAL gun--even if it is "only" a 22. Reminds me of the cap guns we had as kids.

Does anyone have the Sig and a magnet handy??

Edmond: I bought the P22 for $239. Most stores here are asking $249 to $269 now. Mine fills a niche. I wanted a gun for long hikes. I got tired of carrying my all steel Mak or even my CZ RAMI. I also got tired of carrying
9mm ammo. ON a 12 to 20 mile hike, every ounce counts. I wanted something lightweight and something I could plink with on my journey. When I carried my 9mm or 9x18 I would only carry a small amount of ammo.
Thus, .22lr was the way to go and the P22 gave me the lightweight gun that is fun to shoot. If attacked by a Mountain Lion, I'll just hope he is allergic to Remington Golden Bullets.....9 of them. The last one will be for myself.

Do I recommed it? Yes....for my situation. OR if your into the looks and feel of it. It is fun to shoot. Do I recommend it for a plinker that will last and always be reliable. No. It may....but I would recommend a Browning or Ruger for that type of a gun. My Browning fills that niche. My Walther fills another.

I dont see what this really matters. I have a nice pic of a Springfield 1911 with a steel slide that snapped in two. So far, neither my P22 nor SIG have. I have seen one pic of a SIG that did have a slide failure over on the SIGforum. I believe they said it was due to how the can was attached to the gun, but I dont remember seeing a detailed report. I think its the same for any of them, "you pays your money, you takes your chances".

If you dont like the gun fine, dont buy it. If you dont own one and all you do is pass on more internet rumors, "shut up!", you have no right to bitch, and "I heards" dont count. If you do own one and it has been a problem, then by all means, lets hear it. At least you earned the right to bitch and have actual experience to back it up.

Usually, when these things turn into a bad mouth session, and its usually from the same old whiners in all the different threads, when you ask those that "actually own them", what their experiences are, the good responses always seem to out weigh the bad. But dont take my word on that, I heard it might could be an internet rumor. :)

Oh, without stripping it down, the magnet sticks to my slide, even the places the barrel isnt under it. If you want a detail strip and report, it'll cost ya. :)

As far as the P22 is concerned, look at the date code stamped on the barrel in the breech. AG is the one you want.

AG = 2006
AF = 2005
AE = 2004
AD = 2003

gazpacho, why is AG the one to have? What is the difference?

Presumably they're working out kinks in production, machining and metallurgy. I don't know what specifically is different, but I can see why a trend of "newer is better" would make sense with a fairly new design that is having teething issues.
