Why are gun rights supporters worried about bans on so-called assault weapons?

"Just don’t fault gun rights supporters for “paranoia” when the thing they fear is the very thing you’re trying to accomplish."

He is 'dead on' as is his whole article and reflects the stance of the Brady Foundation after the 1994 ban took effect. This is only the beginning they said and started redefining bolt action rifles as 'Sniper' rifles asking, "Why do you need those?"

We have a good memory.

The answer to is question is so blatantly obvious, that it invalidates and destroys is entire question. To wit...... these guns are NOT "assault weapons" in any way, shape or form. What we 'gun enthusiasts own are just 'modern sporting rifles'. His whole question is one of perception and an attempt to demonize our rifles. The same could have been said of the first semiauto rifles after WWII, or the cap&ball rifles between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Every time firearm technology makes a leap, introduces a new operating system, it is first taken on by the military, and later makes it's way to the civilian world. So, with the basic system of the 'modern sporting rifle' now being some seventy years old, it is high time it was seen for what it is, the logical evolution of the basic sporting and hunting rifle. Nothing more or less. The term "Assault Weapon" applied to our sporting rifles is offensive, obnoxious, and utterly wrong. We need to start educating these people to the realities of modern firearms technology.

@Bigdog57

You don't clarify in your post who's being "offensive, obnoxious, and utterly wrong," but since you're ostensibly referring to the article in the OP, you should note that the author goes out of his way to call them "so-called assault weapons," right there in the title.

Once you've established a banned list, it's a simple matter to just add others to it. The gun banners know this and it's part of their plan.
