Why I HATE the NRA

American culture is not like that. Our individuality is our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. The problem in today's society is the lack of education or interest in affairs of state

Sadly, that is true. Right here in NYC, a group of NYU students a few years ago voted on a poll, saying that they would rather give up their right to vote for life in exchange for a free iPod.:barf:

And the attitude that many young people have today is exactly what the leftist extremists WANT us to have. Uninformed, and in the dark. The elitists understand the power of the informed and dedicated masses. They know their only weapon against us is to make us uninformed and un-educated. Sadly many of the younger generation took the bait.

We must start initiating reforms, now, at least on a local level. Then, the reforms can move on to bigger levels, and only then, we will see the nation's mindset change for the positive. If our masses keep wallowing in the dark, they will never realize that they are heading towards a river, and it is only a matter of time before we fall in and drown.

How about they do their good works without being obnoxious?

Fine, don't join. You probably wouldn't be an asset to the fight anyway with these attitudes.

I recall some recent NRA statements about keeping memberships current so their numbers are more reflective of people who support the NRA, which gives them more pull in Washington. Essentially, lack of participation of the majority is fine with them so long as you add to their numbers (which makes sense, and I'm not criticizing).

I wouldn't quit the NRA over something so silly. In fact, knowing how much they care about your freedoms and mine, I would encourage you to write a letter or email to them explaining their problem.

Hopefully they'll get the message. You might keep others from quitting as well.

Folks, it's easy to get irritated about mailings and phone calls, but I need to remind you that concealed carry, castle doctrine laws, guns-in-car laws, the defeat of Al Gore, the Thiart Amendment, and numerous other rights and benefits most of us enjoy are due to the NRA fighting the battle. Let's never, ever forget that. I would rather deal with imperfect customer service and enjoy the above rights and freedoms. The NRA is civil rights/sporting organization, not Apple Corp. If you are interested in customer service only, go with the latter, they are really good.

WELL SAID!:D

Apple Corp? Or go with Microsoft Corp. They are good too, but they send you information that is obviously correct but don't do any good.:neener::D

BTW LOL Torpid, good joke, but of course, joking aside, we must always remember history's lessons and not fall down the well again because of our own blindness to the lessons of the past.

LaPierre

I'm an NRA Life Member and on my birthday Wayne shows up to wash my car, shine my shoes and cut the lawn. Hell of a guy. I don't understand the problems you other guys are having.

We made Ron Paul quit, but we also made Al Sharpton quit, and you're quite welcome for both.

"You know what? It's no loss, we're better off without you." Translation: "Commander in Chief BH Obama." If you really cared, now would be the time to work to bring people in, encourage and welcome them.

And I'm not sure what's High Road about these whining posts anyway, these should all get locked. No useful content.

Amen, brother! Nobody wants to listen to whining!

Life member here. I simply called and asked to be taken off the regular mailing list. I get the NRA alerts via email.

Aw, common, folks. It is so much more fun to complain and gritch than to pick up the phone or keyboard and ask to be put on the "do not mail" list. It is so much more productive than complaining about our real enemies, too. [/sarcasm]

I wonder, sometimes, what a difference it might make if some people would put as much energy into bending a congressman's ear as they do bending ours about the nasty ol' NRA.

Hmmmm Re-reading that, I suspect I might get a moderator waving a finger at me. Not real HighRoad, is it.

"I was going to fight for my ability to exercise a basic Constitutional right, but I just couldn't take all the junk mail."

Freeloaders who would whine and cry about junk mail and membership renewal solicitations would also whine about having to pay taxes on a multi-million dollar lotto jackpot.

An organization spends decades helping to defend your Second Amendment rights, and some of you guys want to blast it or quit just because it asks you the same question twice or asks you for money more often than you'd like???

With this sort of reasoning, I'm guessing that some of you are on your 10th marriage (Don't ask me the same question twice, woman!!), and you kicked your kids out before their 12th birthday (Quit asking me for money!!). Perhaps you all could get together and write a book, "20 Ways the NRA Can Please Me and Avoid Offending Me in Any Way", or "I'm Too Cheap to Spend $35 a Year to Defend My Rights".

For all you guys who still want to rag on the NRA for not supporting Heller from the get-go, I'll say it again. Alito and Roberts were NOT on the Court when this thing was initially coming down the pike. Do you think our odds of winning would have been the same with Rehnquist and O' Connor????

Sorry that $375 for a Life Membership wasn't good enough for you. If it's any consolation, I paid $750 for mine. Would I have liked to have gotten it cheaper?? Sure!! However, I'm sure the money is being put to good use teaching kids to shoot or helping maintain a shooting range somewhere. Is some of it being wasted?? I'm sure a little bit is. I'm also sure it pales in comparison to the amount of my money that the Federal government flushes down the toilet each year.:barf:

The NRA is a very large organization, with all the problems inherent in such an organization.

It also does far more good than any and every whiner who complains about said problems while ignoring the good the NRA does.

If we keep on bashing the people who truly supports our gun rights, we will collapse just like the Ming.

The OP was not bashing those who support our gun rights. He is annoyed because the NRA advertisers are nickel and diming him, not to mention sending him physical spam mail to his front door constantly. I understand his frustration. The OP member should call the NRA and have them take him off the mailing list.

However, he did say he still wanted to renew his membership, so ultimatley, you can't say he is against what the NRA is doing. And you most certainly can't tell him he isn't an asset to the gun community. He has already paid money to them, which probably did some good at some point.

As a result, this correlation between the dynasty and the NRA is weak.

Im not a member of the NRA and I don't plan to be for a good time. Why? Because my money can go to a better use at the time. Does this mean that i shouldn't be able to go do some recreational shooting here and there? I think not, but if you do, well...I don't care.

That sounds to me as if the students were intentionally distorting the results of what they saw as a stupid question.

You know, it's not like junk mail is a necessary part of the plan. It is possible to support the NRA while protesting their policies by delaying membership renewal. They want our memberships for the same reason the OP didn't renew his membership: money talks. The faster they get back to doing what we pay them for the faster they'll get our money.

Think rationally, folks. The only way to change it is to be a member of the organization and work from within. Write letters, make phone calls, etc. Quitting never changed a thing. Except maybe a diminuation in your RKBA down the road a piece. Same lecture for the complaints you have with Congress and Government in general. Disassociating yourself accomplishes nothing. Getting involved might. Your choice.

Customer complaints are an opportunity. As HB pointed out, why would anyone accept a bait and switch, especially from some telephone solicitor?

Where exactly was the bait and switch?

The OP got mad before working through everything.

There are dozens of different "offers" out there and he gets mad because a minimum wage call center dude transferred him to the wrong minimum wage call center chick?

You think those phones are answered by NRA employees? That WOULD be a waste of members money.

You'd think the world was gonna end if the OP didn't get his $300 membership RIGHT NOW.

This is absolutely ridiculous. There's at least one open thread about the $300 life memberships, one or 2 THR members offering to sponsor in any number of ways etc.

This thread is just whining, and childish.

First guy offers Life for $300. OP is ready to accept. First guy transfers him to lady who tells him $750. After some back and forth, she comes up with $300 is for 65+ and veterans only. Okay, he's a veteran. Now, it's $375 for veterans.

"Let me check with my manager. How much were you looking to spend a month?"

Where exactly was the bait and switch?

Paragraphs 2, 3, 4, and 5. He receives a phone call offering a membership for $300, he accepts, then gets transferred to a series of people who will only allow him to purchase that membership for more than $300. It very well may not have been intentional, but it was either a bait-and-switch or horrible organization within the group.

Paragraphs 2, 3, 4, and 5.

No, that's minimum wage call center employees, that's not bait and switch.

Get educated. NRA does not employ the people working the call centers.

Could the system be better? Sure it could. Is it a mess? Probably. Is it an intentional attempt to swindle?

That's stupid on the face of it. It's a screw up.

In retail sales, a bait and switch is a form of fraud in which the party putting forth the fraud lures in customers by advertising a product or service at an unprofitably low price, then reveals to potential customers that the advertised good is not available but that a substitute is.

The OP didn't go far enough in the management/ escalation chain to find out if the $300 was actually available or not.

We know for a FACT that it is, many members here have recently taken advantage of that.

That, by definition, CANNOT be bait and switch. That's simply a confused (probably broke college student) person working a call center desk and reading from the prepared script and someone on the other end looking for a reason to get mad.

I'd hate to see how some of you people handle a REAL crisis.

I'm with the original post

I didn't stop belonging to the NRA because they sent me mail all the time or that they called me now and again. But when they started sending me unasked for tapes of Tales of the Gun and wanting some money I was done.

Looks like Wayne LaPierre continues to run the NRA with an iron hand. Is there any way to get someone else who is actually in charge and who is not just a front for the LaPierre management that continues to tick people off like me that would otherwise join?
