A reported escapee from a Wilmington community correction center was arrested Wednesday night after snatching an off-duty police officer's purse -- which contained her police-issued weapon -- and holding officers at bay for about two hours.

Korrie Smyre, 38, approached the officer at about 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Home Depot in the Miller Road Shopping Center in the 3600 block of Miller Road. The officer, whom police refused to identify, struggled but Smyre was able to break free and run, police said.

"When she came out of the store, the suspect snatched her purse and ran," Wilmington police Master Sgt. Steven Barnes said. "She started to yell and get people's attention around her."

He said the officer is a 22-year veteran who was not scheduled to work Wednesday. Carrying a department-issued weapon or a privately owned weapon while off duty does not violate department policy and is up to an officer's discretion, Barnes said.

After Smyre got away, the officer chased him in her Dodge Ram 1500 pickup to the Brandywine Hills Apartments, at 4310 Miller Road, just blocks away.

Smyre ran into the apartment of someone he knew, who notified police, they said.

Police made contact with Smyre and talked him into surrendering shortly before 8 p.m. They were helped by family and community members, including Wilmington City Councilman Charles Potter Jr., police said.

No one was hurt during the standoff, but the officer whose purse was taken was treated for minor injuries suffered during the struggle.

"I was on my way to Bible study and the police weren't letting people in or out because they said there was someone in the building," said Kim Smallwood, who lives across a walkway from the building where the standoff happened.

Smallwood and other residents watched as SWAT team officers took cover on neighbors' balconies and pointed weapons at the building's entrance.

"They evacuated everyone from that building into ours," Smallwood said. "This is really stressful."

Vené Thomas lives directly under the apartment where Smyre was holed up.

"I heard the woman screaming and knocking on doors," Thomas said. "She said, 'I'm a police officer. Somebody stole my gun!' "

He said the man who lives in the apartment where Smyre was hiding has children, but had to leave once Smyre got there.

The officer's gun was recovered, police said. Smyre, who police said was a resident of Plummer Community Correction Center at 38 Todds Lane in Wilmington, was taken to headquarters, where he was to remain until his arraignment.

Purse carrying sounds like the biggest mistake imaginable to me...
While perhaps its not ideal, I think it is probably still a much better idea than not carrying at all. As much as some people like to say things like "its not supposed to be comfortable..." many people aren't willing to put themselves out that far and its going to be a compromise or nothing. I'd rather my loved ones make the compromise.

Don't they make special 'unsnatchable' purses for CCW? They're supposed to have some reinforced straps or something like that...
I wonder if Coach or Prada makes one? :)

I often use a Safepacker to carry a big sixgun or autoloader, but always have at least one smaller firearm and stout blade on my person. Of course, even more important is heightened awareness.

In this hippy heaven I still use a fanny pack. Only mod is 1/8" stainless steel cable woven inside the belt and through the back padded lining so it makes a complete circle. The release buckle on the left undoes the belt, the one on the right allows the bag to be opened for access to the weapon.

Carry

I either carry in hip holster or in my pocket. I don't see as where a guy would have many more options.

I had a friend that carried a p7 in a "carry vest" This guy was a sucker for this kind of goofy stuff. It was a nice vest goof quality leather ect had a nice holster built right in. Well he went home one week and took it off at a resturant put it on the back of his chair and got up to go and it was gone. Thats right gun and vest both lifted while he sat there stuffing his face what an idiot!

carry vest=$400
hk p7 3 mags=$1500
ccw=$35
look on face when its gone= priceless

22 years on the force hungh? Well, this just goes to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

MDeVinney: I guess you could say that reporting was in her blood.

Many years ago there was an incident in Oregon where a woman who had stopped at a highway accident was walking along the shoulder of the road when someone in a passing car grabbed the strap of her purse. The woman was dragged to her death. Wile I can't prove it, I'm convinced that she was probably using one of those holster purses with a stainless-steel cable in the strap, to prevent a thief from slicing the strap with a razor.
