Bought a rifle this week was wondering if anyone would know date of manufacture. Winchester model 94, 20 inch barrel, serial number is 48876xx .
She cleaned up real purdy. I rubbed in some cold blue and refinished the stock with truoil.

thanks rc. when I bought it looked like it had been used as an oar, hatchet and maybe a pitch fork.

Still a cool rifle. I have an 80's built one and it's still fun. Plenty capable within its designed limits. I just hope you didn't pay a premium because it was beat up.

Pay a premium because it was beat up? Interesting concept. 4Eyes, you did a nice job with the refinish. Better wait for the season to open before you shoot deer with it, but it will work nicely for that. I love my .30-30s.

When it's called patina instead of rust, character instead of scratches, and vintage instead of worn-out: it costs more.

Didn't see where he said what he paid. I bought my post 64 for $100 at a pawn shop in Durango back in 84. It was pretty minty at the time but has lived much of its life as a truck gun so it looks much like the OP's. Seen the Winchesters and Marlins go for some crazy money over the years.

Mine has lots of character & patina. ;)

My Dad paid 300 Pesos for it 50 years ago ($24 US at the time) in Monterrey, Mexico. It's pretty solid & tight for a 102 year old rifle. Still a good shooter too.

Beautiful.

It is anti-American to not own at least on lever action!

Thanks for sharing AB and 4eyes, those are great Winchesters!

ok since some are curious, I paid 300 dollars. I had been looking for couple years now. Many were selling for over 500 dollars in respectable condition. Not being afraid of a project I picked up one in need of a little TLC. I had never refinished a stock before but there were many helpful youtube videos on the subject. I watched several, settled on truoil product, and applied myself. Did the same with the coldblueing. Its not perfect but she's a shooter, which is what I expect from a gun. Rifle kinda likes Hornady 160 grain FTX with Hodgdon Leverevolution powder. Thanks to you all for your comments.
Respectfully, Bob

Better light

These photos have better lighting so you can see the uh (character).;)

The stock looked really hacked up with dents and scratches. One of the videos I watched fellow wrapped sanded stock in wet cloth and pressed it with an iron. Don't tell wife. That technique alone lifted all dents and really helped sanding out all the mars. It pulled some stains from lubricating oil and age etc. and made wood look very clean. Local paint store sold me jar of water base stain he mixed for customer that didn't like color for 10 bucks. Final sanding was with 400 grit paper. That Truoil is pretty easy to use. I like it.
