Would an AR be your only rifle?

You seem to forget that the legislature is the limiting factor at this point in time regarding new legislation.
That's fair. Fair indeed. Point taken. However, leadership is important. An effective leader at 1600 Penn would, presumably, try very hard, and succeed to lead legislators down their desired path. Witness the 40th President of the US. He was a supurb leader and was able to lead our legislators, many of a different party, to enact many things they may not have otherwise enacted. But yes indeed, if we have legislators that stand firm on this subject things may remain favorable to RKBA.

I'm a big fan of the AR15, but if I could only have one rifle, it would have to be a bolt action .270 Win or .30-06. And no, I wouldn't want an AR platform rifle in either of those calibers, regardless of how reliable it might be.

Nothing against ARs, but if I could have only one, I'd want something prettier, with wood on it.

I like having options but if I had no other options, I could make do with an AR type rifle for my lone rifle. Of course I would have to adapt my tactics and mission goals around what I could get the rifle to do for me.

All firearms have their strengths and weaknesses. I don't like the lighter weight bullets of the .223/5.56 ammo but by using extremely accurate shot placement I could survive with the AR rifle in a hostile environment. I did it in Viet Nam many years ago so I could do it again.

Right now the Filipino Marines are using rebuilt M-16 rifles that have been upgraded for use by their Scout/Snipers. These refurbished rifles have 3 by 9 variable Tasco scopes mounted on them and have bipods on them. If I remember right, the FMCSS people are also using slightly heavier bullets too and not the normal 55 grain bullets. I tend to normally use a 62 grain bullet in my AR rifles and M-4 clones when I can but, if I can't find anything else, I will relent and use the 55 grain ammo.

When you have a scoped AR, you have a tool that can deliver some pretty good accuracy as far as shot placement goes on a target. One site I checked out a while back suggested that if you engage a bad guy at 100 yards or less the shooter of an AR should consider trying to make head shots akin to something like doing a Mozambique Shooting Technique but with an AR rifle. The idea was to deliver fast and effective shots on a target that would stop a bad guy from hurting the person defending themselves with the AR rifle.

I would choose a 30-06 because, I could load 50 gr for squirrels, or 220 gr for the largest north American game! the most versitile chambering ever contrived by man......... And no I would prefer a bolt gun!

would I........? hummm NO . Cloud I ? sure. but my AR is in 25WSSM kicking a 120rg at 2950fps and a 75gr V-Max at 3780fps , a bit unfair YEP,.., but I guess I could , oh .. and I get to keep my handguns , right ? need something for brush hunting .

No, If I could have only one. No if I could have only one if the zombie horde comes. No if it WWIII starts up.

No I am partial to my bolt guns then I have a couple of levers I like a lot so no I wouldn't have an ar 15 as my only rifle

If it was, it would not be for very long. There is no way I could function in normal everyday life knowing that I only had one gun. This is a statement meant only to be true for me, not anyone else.

It seems many forget that an AR15 is NOT limited to 5.56/223 only...

OP never mentioned the caliber restriction, so you could have an AR in 6.5, 6.8, 7.62x39, 300BLK, 50Beowulf, etc etc.

Yes, it could be my only rifle if I was limited to one. I would probably choose a different caliber though to suit an all-purpose need, and granted you could have other firearms (shotgun and pistols).

Four numbers, 30-06, all the gun you'll ever need. Been getting it done for yrs. You can even get it in semi-auto! So diverse its scary!

Would it be. No.

Could it be. Only if I had to. It wouldn't be an AR15 but a 10 variant in 308. I'd be able to hunt most in North America.

Only if the .223 ammo were approx. the same price as 7.62x39, now back to .25/round.

Well, if you compare apples to apples, I just bought steel case .223 Tulammo (under the Herter's label) from Cabela's for exactly that...$0.25 per round. Earlier this week. It was $4.99/20

If you are talking about a one rifle only to take on a long term survival application that I had to depend on for everything it would not be an AR or anything semi automatic.

About the easiest rifle to maintain day in and day out for years that the user can work on is a 1903 or 1903A3

I would build one with laminated wood stock, stainless medium heavy barrel about 24" long Swamp cut with handgun scope or Scout Scope mounted about 10" in front of action on a Weaver 92A base. I would have 03A3 lower sling swivels inletted in side of butt stock about 3" in front of buttplate and another inletted in the right place for prone shooting on the front.

sling would be a m1 cotton web sling with the cotton webbing replaced with the rough weave M16 silent sling material. won't rot and lasts forever and doesn't slip down your are or off your shoulder.

It would be chambered in 30.06 with one of my custom reamers that is min dimension so that I could reload empty cases many times without having them fail.

You know, if I had to have only one, or grab only one if I had to bug out RFN, it sure might be the AR-15. I like how light it is, and how I can carry more ammo for less weight with it than high powered rifles. I can hit just about as well with it as I can with the .308 AR out to 400 yards or so... better at the closer ranges. If I had to use it to get game, it will kill anything in my part of the country no problem. Yep, if I had to grab only one, it would definitely be the AR-15.

Thankfully, due to double rifle cases, I shouldn't ever have to make those kinds of choices!

I have one and it is OK, but could never be my only rifle.

Yes you can switch uppers and calibers, but most AR calibers are compromised by OAL. 30 AR is pretty cool, but I have never seen it stocked other than in big cities. the 6.5 and 6.8 are also very neat, but just won't cut it out here in where we hunt in the mountains. Sure they could be pressed into service and work to collect game in a crisis, but I would never purposely take one of them hunting. I know that lots of folks do use them, but they seem to work better at .30-30 ranges.

A sturdy bolt action .308 would be my best choice if I could only have one.

AR's are great rifles, but most certainly not the best choice me as an all around rifle.
