I've got $1100 allocated to spend at the gun show this weekend.

I sold off all my handguns - minus 1 that is still up for sale (Listed here on the for-sale forum!) - so my wife is affording me the low-ball amount for that gun out of our savings.

With an $1100 hard-line limit, I am looking for a handgun that will meet these requirements:

  • 9mm or .40S&W (I don't reload - because of this .45ACP is just a little too expensive for me to shoot as often as I would like).
  • High Capacity (minimum of 12 rounds).
  • 3.7" to 5" barrel.
  • To be used as a range gun.
  • To be used as a concealed carry gun.(I've carried a Beretta 92FS comfortably, which isn't exactly a small gun, so - bulk is not a MAJOR concern).
  • Must have excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Prefer 2-tone but this is not a hard-ball requirement.
  • Must have night sights.
  • Compensated is acceptable - not required and not frowned upon.
  • Accessories (holsters/mags/etc) must be readily accessible and not cost an arm and a leg.
  • Prefer metal frame over polymer, but this is not a requirement.
  • Strong preference for something with a standard rail - not some proprietary one!

I'm just running into a major mental block here trying to figure out some options and good things to look for.

Feedback?

Don't hold back - lay it on me!

I'd get a P229 Elite two tone in 9mm...a beautiful gun IMO...:)

That was actually one of the ones I was drooling over - but - didn't want to walk in wearing blinders - hence my asking for any other options :-D

Hard to go wrong with a Sig! ;)

The only other suggestion I would say is either an HK USP Compact or P2000, depending on if you like cocked/locked or not.

I would recommend Comp Tac for your holster, whichever gun you choose.

The SIG P226 came to my mind as well. They have the two-tone and the SAS versions that you'd probably favor. I'd pick up the Blackwater version myself, but hey, they're all P226's.

Hk P7m8

Sig P226 Elite

Kimber Warrior .45

The Sig is the only one that fits your requirement however

Would $1100 walk out the door with one of these if you factor in the 6-7% sales tax and $5 instant backround check fees? It would be nice to have money left over for a holster so I don't have to use the cheapy Uncle Mike's neoprene ones that I have historically used.

I priced the Non-Elite two-tone P229 w/silver controls as well as the Sig Pro locally - they are wanting $725 and $570 respectively. Per Sig's website, the P226 and P229 are the same price if you buy the same variant (MSRP at least).

Keep the suggestions coming!

while sig builds a fine weapon,,,give the springfield XD line a look,,,,my wife carries an XD40 subcom,,, damn fine gun in my book,,,purty accurate too

you could buy a lot of ammo with the savings over the sig

my .02

My wife actually has an HS-2000 (the Pre-XD XD!)and it's a fine shooter - but she won't let me touch it because that's the one gun that she can actually outshoot me with - until I take it from her and shoot it myself LOL!

The 4" model is a great shooter, but the 5" tactical and 3" SC just aren't balanced right for me. The extra 1 inch of barrel on the 5" throws me completely off... The 3" SC basically ruins it for being a range gun.

I can't see spending $1100 on a pistol. For that kind of money I would get 2-3 pistols or a AR15 or a Keltec Bull pup.

1). Buy used.
2). Get something like a Glock or Springfield XD (9mm and .40S&W compacts are on their way this fall) and chrome the slide.
3). Another Beretta 92FS? Ha ha.
4). Heckler & Koch USP.
5). Buy used.

I don't know. I guess you get kind of uh, more limited with the range + carry + accessories trio than you're used to.

You want:

Steel receiver
9mm or .40 S&W
High capacity
Easy to carry

I say:

Browning High Power :D

The P35 is highly reliable, has beautiful lines, is comfortable in the hands, and dead-on accurate. In closing, that it was designed by JMB doesn't hurt. Browning High Power...it's the pistol you can fall in love with everytime you pick it up.

It's like this - the wife wanted a serious reduction of handguns around the house... Ok - no problem... BUT - it's either use the money at the show that I got back out of the sale of the other guns, or LOSE IT! DOH!

No places around here to fire a rifle unless it's handgun caliber, and if .45ACP is too expensive - forget about .223!

Since you don't want a 45. I would choose the HK P2000 or P2000SK with night sites and a LEM trigger in 40 caliber. I own both and the SK shoots better, so don't let size fool you. About $850.00 for the gun with night sites say $75.00 for a Glaco Concealable, which is perfect for the SK and the rest for spare magazines and some ammo. A trouble feel quality pistol.

Let me make sure this is clear - I personally have no issues with the .45ACP caliber - it's just with the price of the ammo. When I go to the range I'd rather spend $30-$40 on 200 rounds of ammo as opposed to $50-$60 or worse (ok - I picked these numbers out of my nose - but you get the point!)

I'm a Sig dealer, so I'll say this: For a two-tone Elite, you can order it online from someone like, say, me, and not pay sales tax. You will have to pay a transfer fee on your end, usually around $25, but thats half the tax you'd have to pay.

While I can't publicly quote a price due to Sigs MAP rules, I'll tell you this:
After paying the transfer, you'll still have about $160 left over for ammo and a nice holster--I'd recommend a Milt Sparks VMII, but theres a long wait for them.

Drop me a PM if interested, and good luck with the choice.

NIB I paid around $550.00ish for my BHP. 9mm, inexpensive pistol, and lots of money left over to buy thousands and thousands of rounds of ammo.

Go man...go...! Run and buy that thing!!! Let's do the math...you have $1,100.00 to spend, and you pay, as I did $550.00ish leaving you $550.00 for ammo. Now, $550.00 / $32.00 per box of 250 rounds of 9mm, equals 17 boxes. So, 17 boxes times 250 rounds per box equals 4,296 rounds of 9mm!

Don't like 1911 in anything other than 45 with standard capacity as they were designed but that is just me.

I choose this one.

This year I went with the P226 Tactical with a full treatment by Bruce Gray. It is currently wearing the nills grips.

Last year I went will a custom BHP.

I was thinking along the lines of a P229 Elite as well, but I was thinking stainless. You should be able to just squeak under the $1100 limit. Meets all your criteria. :)

It should be well under $1100 You should pay no more than $850 for any of the Sig Elites stock. No one should pay MAP or retail for a NIB Sig.

I personally do not like the beavertail but hey again that is just me.

I'd buy a BHP, XD or a CZ75 and use the rest of the money for accessories and ammo.
