Sharp young woman with nerves of steel.

A young mom was shot twice during a home invasion this week, but heroically defended her life and her infant with her husband's gun.

Semantha Bunce, a 21-year-old combat medic with the National Guard, was feeding her 4-month-old son, Bentley, when the nightmare began.

Bunce’s husband was at work and their daughter at school when the attackers kicked down the door of the North Carolina home.

Bunce frantically rushed the baby up to the bedroom and grabbed her husband’s legally-owned pistol.

“I think it was a shock to the intruders just as much as it was to her,” Paul Bunce, her husband, told WSOC-TV.

She exchanged fire with the intruders, chasing them off, but was seriously wounded.

Bunce remains in the hospital but is in stable condition, reports WCNC. Family members say she will need at least one more surgery.

Police have increased patrols of the neighborhood and are still searching for the suspects. They say they're confident an arrest will be made.

Descriptions of the suspects have not been released.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help the young family, and more than $18,000 has been raised in the last few days.

Good for her, I hope she recovers soon and fully.
But I find it interesting that the reporter felt that they needed to say "husband's legally-owned pistol"...
Why the qualifier ? :scrutiny:

Because the reporter's an idjit.
That said, the key phrase is:

"...21-year-old combat medic." :D

Such people don't understand that they are
supposed to be 'victims'... and to leave their
well-being as a prerogative of the state.

Those kind of people are dangerous...
hence the reporters' immediate concern
that her means of defense was officially
sanctioned by that state.
(and I'm only slightly smiling w/ tightly drawn lips)

Another writeup I saw mentioned that "Even though she took two hits in the exchange of gunfire, she managed to climb back up the stairs and check on her son before she dialed 911 and began taking care of her wounds before the ambulance arrived."

If anyone wants to contribute to the GoFundMe campaign it is at https://www.gofundme.com/358qhydg.

I think cases like this are very important to publicize. I remember one a couple of years ago, a young mom in Oklahoma who had just lost her young husband to cancer like a week before, bad guys broke in (probably looking for the dead husband's painkillers) despite her having moved a couch in front of the door. The 911 call recording was released, she tells the dispatcher she has a gun and asks if she can shoot them if they get in, the dispatcher answers she can do whatever she has to to protect herself and the baby... they broke in and she fired. IIRC she killed the lead BG.

She showed real combat mindset! Stayed in the fight! In my book...she won!

I hope if it ever comes my way I can do as well.

Prayers for her family and an "attaboy" from this corner. For those who aren't aware there are still quite a few folks in our country able and willing to defend themselves and their families -to the death if necessary. I'd be proud to have her as a neighbor. As a retired cop I can remember more than a few instances where as a young cop I was sent to a residence (house, apartment, trailer) where someone had been forced to make that self defense decision. Mostly there was never a shot fired - but the willingness to defend yourself is an important part of the American character as far as I'm concerned...

I related this story to a co-worker,,,

I related this story to a co-worker,,,
Whose reply was:

"If she would have just complied and let them rob her house she wouldn't have been shot."

Statements like this lead me to believe that most people who are rabidly anti-gun are simply cowards.

They don't have what it takes to defend their own selves,,,
So they denigrate and revile those who do as stupid savages.

This sounds harsh but I firmly believe it to be true,,,
Like that oft cited internet quote says.

They sleep easy in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

These type of people are perfectly willing to let someone else risk their life,,,
Their justification is, "That's what we pay them for."

I have absolutely zero respect for these type of people,,,
They are the ones who want to "feel safe" by disarming everyone else.

I want to hate them but can only summon up heavy disgust.

I'd have asked him, "How'd that work out for that doctor in Connecticut and his wife and two daughters?"

Just more proof of the saying, "Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid."

That was my first thoughts exactly.

The NC intruders came armed. They expected to do what they wanted. With no good intentions.

I don't think this is necessarily true .....

I think a lot of people don't understand that there are some people who simply ARE savages.

Yes, a good example of savages.

Is anyone familiar with the CBS-network LEO drama called "Criminal Minds?" In this series the F.B.I.'s Behaviour Analysis Group (BAU) deals with a "psycho job of-the-week." Now, the show is fiction, but there are people like what is represented on screen in reality, and then some people like aarondhgraham's co-worker who simply thinks all criminals are just ordinary folk who "made a mistake" and can be talked out of it.
Geee, I wonder if any one of Jack the Ripper's victims tried talking herself out of being sliced-and-diced. It didn't work too well, if it was tried, did it?

But it isn't really cowardice.... it's naiveté.

Watch a few episodes of 'The First 48'.

So many robberies turn into homocides. I don't doubt that the perpatrators did not initially mean to kill anyone.

But.....look how those turned out. They ended up on the First 48.

Very tough young lady. Anyone who would criticize her actions in this situation is an idiot.

I'd have to go with naivete for the majority of folks that think "some other solution" would be more appropriate. And, of course, in recent years we've done our best to breed the manhood out of "urban man".... Folks that live out in the countryside are far more self reliant in my opinion.

By the way this same mindset "that most are basically good folks making bad decisions" has led to the election of more than a few individuals that shouldn't have gotten a job sweeping the streets.... as far as I'm concerned.

"If she would have just complied and let them rob her house she wouldn't have been shot."

My rebuttal is ... "And you know this... how?..."

Unfortunately you'll get an AMEN from me.
I wish there was a reason to disagree, but there ain't!

The anits could probably come up with something, but then you'd see their nose grow with a Pinocchio effect.

I'm sticking with the word coward,,,

I'm sticking with the word coward,,,
I do realize that it is a harsh/strong condemnation,,,
But I can't use the word naïve to describe not defending ones own self.

Or especially their children.

I've seen it first-hand too many times in my almost 64 years.

If it waddles, has big flat feet, and quacks,,,
I call it a duck.

OK, no big deal. We all have our opinions, as well as belly-buttons. ;)

"If it waddles, has big flat feet, and quacks,,," ~~ I was thinking Rosie Odonnel until I got to the "quack."

This ^^^

I'm not sure that I'd use 'coward'; but I think the sentiment is right.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, they hide their cowardice by naively thinking that if they comply with everything they wont be harmed.

And I suppose that's OK for themselves but when it comes to not defending their own kids, I simply cant understand how maternal/paternal instinct doesn't trump all naivety.

"If she would have just complied and let them rob her house she wouldn't have been shot."

Stress: when people say stuff like this and you have to overcome the urge to put a gun to their head and scream "GIMME YOUR WALLET!!"

"Stupid" is a pretty good description.

No plan I have ever had, have now or will ever have in the future involves trusting in the good judgment, common sense or basic decency of armed robbers.

If you point a gun at me and tell me that you're going to kill me if I don't give you "x", I have no reason at all not to take you at your word. Given that there isn't the slightest chance of me giving you ANYTHING you demand, that leaves me with the choice of running or shooting you until you're no longer an immediate and credible threat to my life and limb:

  1. One of the most valuable things that the Army taught me was that NOBODY an outrun a bullet. Given that I was a lousy runner as a twenty one year old 2nd Lieutenant, and am not one SECOND faster at fifty seven, I'm not going to even bother to TRY to run.
  2. Once you start pointing guns, it's become abundantly clear of what you may be capable. At that point, your well-being ceases to be of the slightest concern to me. My ONLY goal is to bring to bear against you, overwhelming deadly force until you are either incapacitated, surrender or flee.
Anybody who doesn't like that is free to not try to rob me. Most of the world hasn't in the past, and won't in the future. If somebody decides to try, actions have consequences, sometimes highly negative and irreversible ones.

Yes. That is my wife's favorite show. She never misses an episode. Joe Mantegna, who plays the lead, Dave Rossi , is strongly pro-gun. He comes from a family of LEO's who go back several generations.

A well acted drama with very little over the top gun hype or NCIS type nonsense.

Monsters and evil exist in abundance. Being a former US Army Medic, it makes me feel very proud of this young woman's brave actions.
