A Morgan County mother fired three times to stop an intruder from coming into her home Friday morning. She was home alone with her two children.

From the doorway to her kitchen, Suzanne Carson said she could see a man who appeared to be in his 20s trying to force open her back door.

Carson said her first shot hit the kitchen wall, a few inches to the left of the back door. She said she fired twice more before the man fled.

A woman home alone with her two children in Morgan County's Coalfield community fired a gun three times Friday morning to protect herself and her family.

Shortly after Suzanne Carson's husband left for work, Carson said she went back to bed with her 3-year old daughter.

When she heard a noise, she got up to check on her 4-year old son, who was sleeping down the hallway.

"As I stood here, I could hear someone at the back door," Carson explained, standing in her home's hallway, at the doorway leading into the kitchen.

Carson said she saw the face of a young man trying to open her back door.

She said he appeared to be in his 20s and was wearing a dark baseball cap with a yellow logo

Carson went for a gun, with only one thought.

"The first thing actually was my kids," Carson said.

She thought, "Ok, I'm going to have to do something to protect them."

Holding the gun, Carson said she yelled for the man to stop.

"I could see his arm entering my home," she said. "That's when I fired the first shot."

The kitchen wall took a hit, but it didn't stop the intruder.

"He stepped completely into the kitchen, and that's when I fired the other two shots," Carson explained.

The shots shattered the glass storm door and ripped holes in the screen.

Carson said the man wearing a thick dark shirt or jacket fled into the woods behind her home.

"I was terrified, absolutely terrified," Carson said. "And I remember screaming the whole time it was going on.

"He didn't say anything, not one word," she added.

It scares Carson to even think about what he wanted, this time.

She believes he was also outside her home Thursday night, when she was home alone with her children again.

"They actually tried to open one of the playroom windows," she explained.

The woman whose husband taught her to shoot a gun for the first time a month ago didn't hesitate Friday morning.

"I'm so proud of her for being able to protect herself and the kids," husband B.J.. Carson said. "She's truly a hero."

"I've been wanting a new back door, so I figure this is a good chance to get one," Suzanne Carson laughed.

Carson said her daughter slept through the whole ordeal.

The Morgan County Sheriff said prison dogs lost the suspect's trail in the woods.

They're not sure if he was hit, but hospitals have been notified to be on the look-out for a gunshot victim.

Meanwhile, the Carson's home is not far from the Coalfield school.

Friday afternoon, the school principal said school officials were keeping a close lookout in the area surrounding the school.

Wow I'm not sure if she should head off to church first to thank God she didn't hit the guy since he didn't threaten her or have a weapon visable or off to the range to do some serious practice shooting !

3 shots and all misses with the guy framed in a doorway isn't good .

I hope whatever state she lives in allows her to fire under the circumstances in which she did so she isn't facing some stupid charges .

Linky?

(Good article. Thanks for posting it. Hit all of my personal hot buttons!)

Okay, I'm not making light of the article and I'm thanking God this woman is okay (though she NEEDS to practice more).

But I couldn't suppress an internal laugh when I saw the line
"The first thing (she thought about) actually was my kids," Carson said.

It was "for the children"!

BigO01,

Look at the article more carefully. She warned him, he entered the home by reaching in after being warned, she fired and he came all the way into the kitchen regardless of the warning and the first shot and only retreated after she fired 2 more shots. In TN, and especially the area she's in, she'll probably get a medal, but I serously doubt she'd trade the lives of her children for the concern of whether she might face charges for a good shoot. She had a reasonable fear for her life and the lives of her children, the criminal broke into her home while being warned, armed or not he represented a threat. Luckily she has nothing to fear since criminals that have been shot in this type of situatin DO NOT get coddled by the courts here.

Holding the gun, Carson said she yelled for the man to stop.

"I could see his arm entering my home," she said. "That's when I fired the first shot."

The kitchen wall took a hit, but it didn't stop the intruder.

"He stepped completely into the kitchen, and that's when I fired the other two shots," Carson explained.

good for her!! i was hoping like most of you he got hit at least once..... as for her needing more practice yes she does but she did every bit as good as about 95% of the cops i've seen!!! good for her husband to get a weapon and teach her to shoot too!!

A twenty something male against an average female is disparate force.

Good for her, a little range time will help, she has only been shooting for a month.:)

Castle Doctrine, which states she has no duty to retreat in many states within her home. What should a lone woman do when a guy comes in without saying a word or having a weapon? Wait until he can take away her gun because he is unarmed?

She warned him, her presence while breaking in shows intent beyond burglary and a willingness to confront the occupant, presumably with force. Her first shot which without castle doctrine would be illegal and even with it is questionable, could be used to show he was determined even when faced with deadly force do do as he wished, as he continued to come completely inside, thus advancing. If she missed the following shots, well she needs some practice.

This was not in the streets. If she has Castle Doctrine to protect her she can stand her ground in her home and defend her home before the guy takes away her gun, not after. Shooting at a guy breaking in when he can see her and is she is screaming and there is no doubt he is willing to confront her is questionable, but once he made his way inside I think it became pretty clear cut.

Bet she just found the motivation to get back to the range with her husband.

Another one of those instances that never make into the anti's statistics, no one shot but a home defense handgun saves the day. Good job, good woman. Well done.

Hey, guys, take it easy: this woman has been shooting for exactly one month.

Bet no one here could have done much better under such extreme stress, a mere month after the first time he picked up a firearm.

Hey I have absolutely no problem with what the women did "Except Miss her Target" but I don't see the state anywhere in there and not having read any of the castle doctrine laws have no idea what is or isn't allowed under them or if she is even covered by them .

What I do know is I have read that in some states under these circumstance she could wind up in jail for a very long time "whos going to protect the kids at night while Mommy is doing prison time" .

Considering the fact that she missed with three shot at a fairly close distance I would say she is very lucky the guy didn't charge her instead of running away . Had he attacked I doubt she is capable of making an effective enough hit to to protect herself or her kids from harm .

All things considered I would hope she goes out and gets her family a good guard dog like a Germen Shepard , it would have kept the guy from entering the house in the first place .

Since she obviously can't shoot the next time the dirtbag might show up with a gun of his own !

She stood up when many would've been laying down. As the Norse say, "Luck often smiles upon the brave".

I tip a brew to her. The gun was just an extension of her will, her mindset, the most effective weapon one can possess.

Good For the Woman. One month of shooting, probably only once or twice, maybe 100 rounds... Cudos to her. The fact that she gave a warning shot, missed the first time, and the perp continued to enter, she would have had IMHO, a justified shooting, regardless of outcome, death.

If the guy comes back he's a fool. I think he probably got hit by one of teh following two shots in that the window and screen were hit.

BigO01, She would NOT go to jail for her actions. Completely justifiable. Ask any DA if he would prosecute a woman home alone with two children? I Say NOT.

A dog can be circumvented easily. the fact is anyone who has the desire to illegaly enter a property be it a business or home will get in. I'd recommend an alarm instead of a dog. Third party notification can go a long way in a shooting. Perp enters alarm goes off, Alarm company phones home, customer answers "HELP, he's comming in", police are called.

They're not sure if he was hit, but hospitals have been notified to be on the look-out for a gunshot victim.

Sigh. "Gunshot victim."

" . . . on the lookout for a suspect with gunshot wounds matching the description . . ."

Corrected.

Meanwhile, the Carson's home is not far from the Coalfield school.

Why is this of any significance? Are they worried that the perp might do something at the school? Or, more likely, are they intimating that this woman had a gun near a school! Think of the other children!

zoom6zoom,

It's sad that some of you are so brianwashed that you think that everyone who defends their families will be subjected to ridecule and legal persecution. It's just not that way in most of America and it certainly isn't that way here. They're saying it's near the school because the creep may have tried to get into the kids' room the other evening and there were 2 little ones at home when he did get in. Add to that the school is used as a landmark for anyone giving directions in the area.

Folks this is east Tennessee near Brushy Mountain Prison. Most folks have family that work at the prison. It's not like the blighted anti-ridden places you're used to. If she hit him and they catch him because of it she'll be lauded as a hero for defending her children and leading to the arrest of a dangerous predator. The word hero is in the new articles.

Absolutely, bully for her. Except ...

The woman whose husband taught her to shoot a gun for the first time a month ago didn't hesitate Friday morning.
She needs some serious range time. At least two out of those three shots should have hit something other than the wall and the window.

From packing.org, on TN law:

39-11-611. Self-defense.

(a) A person is justified in threatening or using force against another person when and to the degree the person reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to protect against the other's use or attempted use of unlawful force. The person must have a reasonable belief that there is an imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury. The danger creating the belief of imminent death or serious bodily injury must be real, or honestly believed to be real at the time, and must be founded upon reasonable grounds. There is no duty to retreat before a person threatens or uses force.

(b) Any person using force intended or likely to cause death or serious bodily injury within the person's own residence is presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or serious bodily injury to self, family or a member of the household when that force is used against another person, not a member of the family or household, who unlawfully and forcibly enters or has unlawfully and forcibly entered the residence, and the person using the force knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry occurred.

Under TN law, she appears to have nothing to worry about.

She had been shooting for one month, she had the presence of mind to arm herself in this situation, and she displayed the will to shoot in defense of herself and her family. I have the highest admiration for her, and if such a thing happens to me, I hope I do as well. (I also hope I am able to shoot a bit more accurately).

I seriously doubt the intruder will be back. I'd say "all's well that end's well." And, I'll bet the husband will provide additional training.

The gun succeeded in it's purpose, stop a threat. You don't always have to kill to stop a threat. The perps just have to be convinced that you are trying to kill them, or will kill them, and with a couple more bullets or better luck you will succeed. Worked for me in the past. It can actually work in your favor if you are a good shot, and can ventilate their personal space a little. Saves on lawyer fees and avoids police harassment. Just don't ever tell them you were only trying to scare them off. Your response should be "Officer, I was afraid for my life, had no choice but to defend myself, but I was trembling like a leaf and I don't think I hit them."

Fortunately, I've never been in her situation so I'm not going to be too critical of her missing three times. After all, I've read about and seen stories on the news of trained LEOs firing more shots than that before they actually hit anything. As far as I'm concerned, she achieved her primary objective, she stayed alive and protected her family. I'm glad she had the presence of mind to arm herself and the courage to actually fire at her attacker (proper mindset). Her husband should be proud. Atta' girl!!! :D
