Australia Sees Spike in Gun Crime Despite Outright Ban

Firearms black market in the island nation bigger than previously thought

Australia has seen a rise in gun crime over the past decade despite imposing an outright ban on many firearms in the late 1990s.

Charges for crimes involving firearms have increased dramatically across the island nation’s localities in the past decade according to an analysis of government statistics conducted by The New Daily. It found that gun crimes have spiked dramatically in the Australian states of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Tasmania. In Victoria, pistol-related offenses doubled over the last decade. In New South Wales, they tripled. The other states saw smaller but still significant increases. Experts said that the country’s 1996 ban on most semi-automatic firearms has actually driven criminals to those guns. “The ban on semi-automatics created demand by criminals for other types of guns,” professor Philip Alpers of the University of Sydney told The New Daily. “The criminal’s gun of choice today is the semi-automatic pistol.”

Gun control advocates in the country insist that the problem is too little regulation. They said, while most modern firearms are illegal and all legal firearms owners must obtain licenses from the government, ammunition is not controlled tightly enough. “There is very little regulation of ammunition purchase,” Samantha Lee, a spokesperson for Gun Control Australia, told the publication. “In most jurisdictions you can purchase ammunition because you have a firearm licence and there is no restriction on the type you can purchase – so if you own a rifle you can still purchase ammunition for a handgun.”

you know of course that the demos/liberals...will ignore this report.....cuz they are convinced that gun control will reduce crime in the USA

The Australian ban on semi-automatic guns has led to a black market supplying such guns to criminals, and increased use of semi-automatics in crime.

Gun Control Australia says the problem is there is no ban on ammunition for licensed gun owners.

Any bets a ban on ammunition won't lead to a black market in ammunition?

What's Australian for "stuck on stupid"? Gun Control Australia?

Silly question: If all semi-automatic handguns are banned, who would sell ammunition for them?

Semi-automatic rifles are also banned, so nobody would be selling ammunition for pistol caliber carbines, either. They may exist, but I've never seen a semi-auto caliber lever or bolt action rifle. Rimmed pistol calibers, yes, but not rimless semi-auto.

Gee!! You mean to tell me the crooks didn't turn their guns in too?:banghead:

More proof, as if any were needed, that the gun control mentality is ruthlessly absurd. It suggests that we should pass a law that prevents law abiding citizens from keeping and bearing arms. You end up with a situation where the predators have all the guns and the law abiding citizens cannot defend themselves.

Their "solution" implies that we can trust the government with a monopoly on guns even though we can't trust ourselves with them!

Now their leftist progressives are saying the problem is ammo? Their logic is so weird, it's just so bizarre because it's so bad. First they want to control crime by banning semi auto guns from public access. They do that and yet gun crime goes up with the very guns they have banned to you and me. So instead of admitting it's not working, they want to double down and ban you and me from buying ammo because in their logic, they can't stop criminals from getting illegal guns so why not ban non criminals from ammo? Because, you know, banning law abiding citizens from ammo will definitely lower crime because criminals obey the law.

It's just bizarre. It's insanity, that's really what it is.

Remember, Candidate Hillary said she was open to Australian style gun policies.
Obama touted Australia and the UK as models of gun control legislation, too.

It really doesn't matter what the President likes or doesn't like as far as gun laws go, when the House and/or Senate have a majority against it.

Checks and balances.

The President signs or vetoes the bills passed by Congress (both houses), and Congress can then overturn that veto if unified enough against the veto.

At this point, if Obama could have done anything unilaterally to install gun control legislation, he would have.

There isn't a 100% ban on semi-auto hand guns.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Australia

Target shooters are limited to handguns of .38 or 9mm calibre or less and magazines may hold a maximum of 10 rounds. Participants in certain "approved" pistol competitions may acquire handguns up to .45", currently Single Action Shooting and Metallic Silhouette.

IPSC shooting is approved for 9mm/.38/.357 sig, handguns that meet the IPSC rules, larger calibres such as .45 were approved for IPSC handgun shooting contests in Australia in 2014

And yet, in their southern neighbor of NZ (whose NRA is second only to ours) they have no such issues............
Gee, when will they ever learn that it is the criminal, not the inanimate object?

What id they get like 20-30% compliance? Maybe they'd get the same here or less..

Gun control and ignoring this report

you know of course that the demos/liberals...will ignore this report.....cuz they are convinced that gun control will reduce crime in the USA

:banghead:

No. They'll ignore it because they want to ban guns. It is not and never has been about reducing crime. I don't understand why more gun owners don't get it. They are arguing about ban guns to reduce crime and we fall for it. They are for banning guns to get control.

GCA has about 5 members, they are a joke, but the media always gets them to spew their 2c. They are painfully ignorant of the things they want to ban. There was also a Senate inquiry into the inability of police to yada yada yada, long story short, they were drowned with stats that refuted their claims and it went nowhere for them. Nobody in this pc place wants to say "it's mostly bikie gangs and middle eastern crime syndicates"

We have had some wins with some senators batting for us, like you guys, they are relentless in their pursuit of making the world cinform to their ideals.

There isn't a 100% ban on semi-auto hand guns.

I knew that, but my point still stands. Ownership is so limited that it would have to be a specialty shop that stocks any 9mm, and there's maybe a hundred people who own anything above 9mm. That being the case, I doubt that the average Joe with an Australian rifle or shotgun FOID is going to waltz into a random gun store and find 9mm, let alone buy some and then use it in a crime.

We already discussed .38 as a possibility for lever action, but not semi-automatics.

Most gun shops carry 9mm, 38 Special, .357 magnum and possibly .38 Super. The other calibers are pretty rare.
The legislation came about because one crooked dealer sold bulk ammo to a 'middle eastern crime gang' which is PC speak for Arabic tribal militia. Combine that with the same MECGs running a machine shop that produced Mac 10s and owning a customs brokerage/bond store to smuggle in firearms and the standard 'lock the door after the horse has bolted' behavior began.
In reality the gun dealer, the machinist and the broker are all in jail. Normal police detective work and good prosecutors solved the problem.

On the plus side in Australia, an attempt to ban lever actions just flopped.
An Australian importer took orders for 7000 lever action shotguns in two days.

The Prime Minister announced he would ban their importation. He is no longer the Prime Minister.
A meeting of State Police Ministers was called to approve prohibiting ownership by citizens as well. As usual there was over reach, they were asked to ban all lever actions with capacity greater than 5 rounds, which would have banned the Marlin 336 as well, which is a very popular firearm. The Police Ministers rejected the proposed legislation.

This is probably why GCA are pushing ammunition bans. Their last push failed, so they are changing tactics.
