OK, I's 68 now, and been shooting for over 60 yrs. I carry for 45 of them. So no rookie answers here, I carry a gun every day inside or out, and still can't find a holster that either doesn't stick out or give me a pain in the ribs after a few hours.
I have "like most of you" tried everything from plastic, Krydex, and leather. with leather coming closest. The best way for me is to pocket carry a single stack 9mm, of even a XDS, but if I want to take a glock 19 or a 1911, I have to OWB it.
I even tried the pants with the holster in the pockets for 100 a pair, the elastic nut crusher that makes you look odd to many people with a 2 lb gun and a mag bouncing between your legs.
I know this has been covered, but really how do guys over 50-60 carry a full size or hi cap gun. The OWB needs an outer garment and FL makes that hard other that in the winter.

Yoou're gonna find out that we're not built like those that the IWB holsters are made for. Love handles and beer bellies just don't cut it.

When it's not a pocket holster for me it's a shoulder holster and I'm limited to say a keltec PF-9 or P-11

Honestly I am 190 and 6 foot tall, owned a health club, but my back is bad. That's the issue. But even when it wasn't, back in the olden days, like the 70's, we all wore a holster on the hip, shoulder or anke. I can't wear a shoulder rig in this heat, nor an ankle rig either.
So i am back to a conventional holster or a Blade Tech, "they are the thinnest I have found" after trying most other types, The Remora and stickey, work in the sense that I put a clip on 2 of mine and they stay iwb, in sweat pants, without a clip they fall right through.
I emailed them 2 years ago and told them they needed a clip, and guess what, now they offer one. But IWB is still a bitch to pull from fast enough for my liking. And I am not a heavy guy. It is just tight when you pull that belt to keep it from poking out.
The tactical pants from LAPD work, but you look like a Lineman for the County. I ordered another couple of pairs, brcause at least they have a dozen pockets. i can get a 26 or 19 in the waistband and a lcp or PM9 in a snapped pocket. along with mags and a phone and car keys. Soon I am just going to hire a guy to carry my stuff.
If someone has a better holster let me know, is the Safariland any better than the Blade tech. Also Bikini holsters work great, but your gun is visible unless you have tee shirts that hang down to your knees.
If this keeps up I will have to invent my own. I lost my text formatting after posting, weird. Lots of new computer Viruses last 2 days be careful, I scanned twice today and found 6 more.

I'm 6'3" and north of 300 lbs.

I carry a lightweight commander sized 1911 98% of the time.

Alien Gear IWB holster or a De Santis Inner Piece holster.

Living in North Texas I wear light shirts untucked all year. Never have a problem with comfort or printing.

I carry one spare mag in a magholder (brand name) on the left side and another spare mag in a pocket of my shorts/pants.

I'll also add I have severe chronic lower back problems.

There is no doubt it is more difficult to conceal, and comfortably carry a large gun, than a small gun. Everything is a trade off.

The OWB needs an outer garment and FL makes that hard other that in the winter.
As you walk the streets in Florida, do you ever see anybody wearing ...

Guayabera shirts http://www.mycubanstore.com/guayaberas.html

Or Hawaiian shirts http://www.hilohattie.com/collections/hawaiian-shirts

The Wilderness Tactical has their Sonoran shirts http://www.thewilderness.com/sonoran-shirts/

You could also use a travel/photographer's vest https://shop.nationalgeographic.com...ng/jackets-and-vests/travel-vest?code=SR50004

All of these would probably look a little out of place in Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland, but would be right at home in most of Florida.

I believe that a good (very stiff) leather belt and proper holster position are as much important as a good holster (and good holster means leather! :)) - I carry every day a full sized all steel pistol in an IWB holster, just behind my pelvis bone, similar to the Milt Sparks Summer Special 2 without problems. For warmer months I prefer polo shirts because I find the non-stretch garment of button up shirts to be uncomfortable and printing too much when I bend over or reach down. Pants are also important - classic, one-size-up, chinos with high waste line above the pelvis bone work best for me and they really help distribute the weight.

Best,
Boris

P.S. OWB holsters may seem easier to carry, but they are actually more demanding on good belt & proper carry position - (a quality) IWB is more forgiving.

Another vote for Milt Sparks and a quality gun belt.

I'm not built like Twiggy (6'4" and 245), and my full-size XD45 has ridden comfortably in a Milt Sparks Versamax II for years. My leather gun belt is by Galco and my synthetic instructor-style belt is from 5.11.

I have found that I only use the Galco belt when I have to dress "up" a little. With jeans and shorts, I almost always choose the instructor version because it allows me to set the perfect tension around my waist.

I L/handed and my 1911 IWB holster is made by UBGholsters Iam 6'2 and 285 . carried same way same holster at 350. Approx 8:30. Holster and good belt . I only wear jeans and a T shirt most of time in cold weather a jacket over the T shirt.

Yet another vote for Milt Sparks V-max.

And, I confess, also am fairly pleased with its clone, the Galco V-Hawk.

Both work well on a middle aged guy... But I'll also confess that any IWB holster is going to give the user a reminder to reduce some carbs and keep the love handles in check ...

The answer is simple unless you're in law enforcement, security or military you do not need high capacity or large handgun to carry. Ask yourself in that 45 years how many times have you really needed a handgun?

I found that the only comfortable answer is a shoulder system. If that is not possible, then it's belly pack. Learn to love fanny packs, collect and modify colorful ones. Fortunately at our age nobody bats the eye. Everyone dresses casually these days. I have to admit though, I have to stick to lighter, smaller 45s. I'm right in the process of migrating away from Kahr P45 to Shield 45.

I played with Kangaroo carry and Urban carry a little bit. Didn't like the result. Kangaroo always rotates on my body. Urban is not compatible with driving.

I did VM2, Crossbreed Supertuck, and a few others, and eventually settled on SmartCarry for work; I've *never* been made, and that's with my M&Pc in 357SIG - hardly a pocket pistol. It's not quite as quick of a draw, but I used to literally go running with mine on, it keeps a spare mag right there, and it doesn't pull your pants down. Easy to forget I'm wearing it. *May* have to buy pants slightly larger in the waist to be perfectly comfortable, you may not.

Seriously, I'd *strongly* recommend anyone try it at least once - it's been pretty revolutionary for me.

I'm 6' and 240, and Use a King Tuk for IWB with my 1911 and PT145, have Remoras for both of them, but to use the 1911 one, I have to squeeze my guts too tight. In this nice fall weather, I can wear the OWB Safariland for the PT145 (it's a P220 one, but fits well) , and a Bianchi slide OWB for the 1911. I have two nice Kydex IWB holsters that fit my PT145, I'm wearing one as I type this. I do have a 'universal' (adjustable) shoulder holster, but usually only wear it riding motorcycle.

4 or 5 times, including a 5 man home invasion team, 3 attempted car Jacxkings, I like nice cars, and used to enjoy late night life in NYC, many yrs ago, and a couple of attempted robberies in one of my stores in Queens and one on Lexington Ave, when 2 guys robbed a liquor store and walked up to me in my car tapped on the window with a 1911 in his hand, and said open the door.

theFor the gentleman that nothing ever has or will happen to, I did carry a snubby back when that's all we had, but the past 5 years has taught us that although violent crime is down, "caugh caugh", when it occurs it can be much more violent than 20 yrs ago, when maybe the guy had a revolver. Today you could be in the movies or the mall, anywhere, and some idiots decide this would be a good time and place to kill a whole bunch of people. I sure am not going to nit pick over 5 or 6 more rounds in my gun. I want 15+, why, because it takes 3-4 rounds to stop 1 guy, and 50% of all shots fired are misses. So that leaves me with an optimum of 8 rounds or 2 perps down.
If you ever did get into a gufight, you would know that 5 rounds take a second to shoot, and maybe you hit one guy , "you are all moving", it's not like shooting paper. Bullets are coming and going. Now how are you going to feel once you have fired your 5 rounds and there are still a couple of guys, maybe wounded as may you be, still shooting at you.
this happens a lot to victims of shootouts. Hopefully they run away after the first few shots, but these new gangbangers will stand and shoot at you. Go see Sicario, the movie, it's taken from true events, this is what is coming accross our borders by the thousands every day. They will draw down on Law enforcement knowing they will be killed. The FBI has stopped countless numbers of terrorist plots to shoot up malls and other events where Americans gather.
Maybe if you live in Kansas or Nebraska, "nothing against them, they are Americans just like me, but there aren't large areas of wealth, and elitest gathering areas, where a statement can be made, the "Port Cities" like NY, Miami, LA, Chicago, Texas, is where they concentrate their terror campaign, and the inner cities of many other states have Obama inspired race relation problems, which had just about stopped when this idiot took office. Things will get worse before they get better. If i could wear body armor and carry an AR sbr, I would. as many are keeping them in their vechicles now. Colon Noir showe his "truck Gun" last week, a Pellican case with an AR pistol and a Glock. He may be a bigger target because of the NRA position he hols as a spokesperson, but everyone is in some type of danger at some time.
At leats do the minimum that makes sense, carry a 20 oz Glock and an extra mag, so if the crap does hit the fan, where you happen to be with yur kids or grandkids, you will have a chance of surviving.
You need to wake up and see what's going on in this country. These people in San Bernadino, Orlando, LA, NY, and dozens more, they weren't doing anything and got gunned down

Honestly, if you're relatively thin and fit you might want to try appendix iwb carry. Start with a mic "holster". I found it easy and comfortable to carry with a GLOCK 26 and 19. Especially the 26.

I'm not sure carrying a "big" gun like a G19 or 1911 is ever gonna be totally comfortable, but I've found aiwb with a trigger guard holster to be as comfortable if not more comfortable than any other way. If you find you like aiwb then there are other options for appendix holsters.

Train it, practice it, and wear a good belt.

Btw, other appendix holsters that I've found good are the Blackhawk ARC (yep, I know, $20), and the raven eidolon ($$$)

Just some thoughts

As someone already mentioned, a proper belt is key......maybe even more important than the holster itself, but you need both to be constructed properly. My FFL, who makes quality holsters and belts, solved this issue for me years ago.

That said, I prefer owb carry unless it's a .32 or .380 in my pocket.

I'm not quite as old, but no spring chicken, and a wee bit overweight...oops.
I discovered that i don't care about "looking hot for the honeys" anymore, so I don't care if I like like a fat old slob with my oversize untucked t-shirt, or my over vest during the "cold" months here in AZ.

Three options that work well for me with full size handguns;

The High Noon Slide Guard, tucked in well on a good belt, under an untucked t-shirt works just fine with my very full size CZ P-09.

Then for IWB. The High Noon Down Under with straps also works very well with my full size CZ SP-01 Phantom, shwon here with standard 16 round mag as opposed to the usual 18.

Last, the High Noon Close Encounter with the P-09, a good rig, but as I..."expand"..I find IWB becomes a little more difficult. It still works well.

Dress around the gun and you'd be surprised what will disappear.

I'm only a few years younger than you. I gave up the experimentation and simply go with a paddle holster and leave my shirt un-tucked. I've found that a Wild Bill's "Fusion" paddle sits pretty tight against my side. You can also go with the small of the back carry but that makes sitting or driving kind of uncomfortable sometimes. Occasionally I even carry my XDs .45 in a tiny zipper case that looks just like a day-timer calendar! Nobody even suspects that little leather case on the table has a .45! in it!

It makes a big difference whether you wear your pants at your waist or at your hips. If you wear them down pretty low, then, sure, whatever gut or love handles you have will be pushing hard against the top of the gun. Wear your trousers a bit higher, and a lot of those issues go away.

I've got some love handles and am 58. I really like my Sticky Holster for my Shield. I have several types of holsters, but that Sticky Holster for an adjustable IWB works for me. It has never slid out weather working, on the tractor, in town or where ever. I can move it around a little according to how the particular brand to pant is fitting on my waist.
