I've owned a couple XD's and loved them, but sold or traded them off and regret it, but have the chance to buy a brand new XD 45 full size for $430.00 OTD the only draw back for me is that the gun would be heavy to carry on a daily basis and I have 9mm ammo for when I had my XD mod 2 service model so hate to go back to 45 but thinking for the price I could live with it and eventually get the 9 in the sub-compact.
So my question is should I buy this 45 and then get the 9 later

Sounds like a decent deal. Springfield also has a promotion right now where you get 4 free mags, a mag holder and a holster.

While $430 is a pretty good deal, this doesn't really sound like a gun you need or really even want that much. It sounds like you're buying it because it's a good deal.

A quick search on Gunbroker shows several mod 2's for close to the same price. Yes it may be a little more expensive with transfer fees and shipping, but if you could get what you want I think it's worth it.

If you see yourself picking up a 45 at some point anyway, then go for it.

I like my XD45 but I'd get a Mod 2 or Xdm if I were buying new today. Mine won't feed flat point 200gr ammunition but I hear that is extremely common to this model. Never found an issue with anything else and have nothing bad to say about the gun.The mag promotion is a nice deal, I've been thinking about the xdm 3.8 compact 9mm myself.

I had an XD 45 years ago and loved it I just went to the 9mm and would prefer to stay with it but have no problem with getting the 45, and had the mod 2 in a 4 inch service model in 9 that was probably the best shooting pistol I have ever owned and I'm no pistol shooter by any means but that one made me look decent

You're already on 9 mm, so it makes no sense for you to add a .45, unless it's specifically something you want. Just be patient and find a good deal on a long-slide XD or XDm in 9mm.

I'm in the opposite position, all my guns are in .45, and I often wish it weren't the case. "My" Shield is bigger than "your" Shield, is heavier, carries less ammo. Well, my XD is exactly the same as your XD though.

Ditch the original xd and go with the mod 2. There are many reasons including superior design ergos, and tbe ability to use different size magazines.
