I'm planning on buying an XD in the near future, and I'm torn between the 9mm and the .45 (no I'm not bringing that question up). I've only held my friend's .45; I've never seen the XD-9 before. Is there a difference in the grip size/length between the two? How does the XD-9 feel in the hand in comparison?

If anyone has both, a picture would be great. Thanks!

FWIW, I have the SC9, service 9 and the service 45. I like the SC9 better than the others. Fits my hand good using Pearce grip extensions. I use 40 cal SC mags with "tweaked" lips, this allows 13 rds total. My SC is super accurate also.

I have the XD-9 (love it!!). When I was at the shop looking around the guy was trying to sway me towards the XD-45 (he was a big .45 fanatic, and loved the XD-45 because of the way it felt, and the mag capacity). When I held the XD-45 it felt practically the same as my 9 (perhaps slightly heavier). As for size/length the two are pretty much the same. So basically it's just a matter of do you want a 9 or a .45? Hope this helped.

I have both and they feel about the same. The 45 is little thicker and actually feels better in my hand. I don't have a pix of my XD9. They both shoot very well. I'd get both if you can, but I'd vote for the 45 first (I'm a .45 guy).

Love my XD .45's

I have both the Service model and Tactical model of the Springfield .45 and they feel great. I have handled the XD 9mm, but do not own one. They feel very much the same, the difference is in caliber. Weight difference is 5 oz more for the service model .45 The tactical .45 weighs 1oz more then the Tactical 9mm. The mag on the .45 holds 13 and the 9mm 15 rounds. Soooooo I advise the .45 It is a fine gun, easy to handle, easy to clean, accurate and a real hand cannon. Can't go wrong with the .45

Have a great one!

They feel very much the same, the difference is in caliber.

Though dimensionally close on paper, the XD.45ACP grip is wider than the XD9, and that difference is very perceptable...at least to me...

though i know there is a difference in the two's grip girth, it was hard for me to tell when i was holding the .45. i could tell that the grip was longer definetly than the other calibers in the same size frame, but yet it still didn't make a great big bit of difference, it still felt good in my hand, and with small hands like mine that is unheard of to find a 13+1 .45 that fits that good! I like the .45's but i suggest the 9mm for the simple fact that ammo is so darn cheap and you will be able to shoot alot more with it!

I'm new here so won't take much time...shot my XD-9SC for the first time in some months. Starting win Win white box, I was not impressed by my performance. After settlinng down, I switched to Corbon which I had never fired and was very impressed. Nothing to post a pic of, but i could leave the range without a red face.

I recently handled an XD 45 at a gun show. Compared to my XD 40, I could tell a perceptible difference in the grip girth, my XD 40 fits my hand like a glove, the XD 45 did not feel nearly as natural or comfortable. Yes, I was interested in the XD 45, but after handling it, it just doesn't feel right.

Thanks for your answers. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 9, which is a big departure for me considering I've only had 1911s before this.

Now if I can just get enough money scraped together :( Yay college.

Depends on size of hands

For the 9MM or the .45ACP. I have the .45 ACP XD and I love it. I sold my XD 40 even though I liked that one as well.
Seriously, it depends on how each feels in the hand. The background mentioned above about only being experienced with a 1911 is perfect, b/c that's where the XD gets its grip from.

I have a XD-45ACP tactical and XD-9 service. They both feel about the same. The 9mm is slightly smaller and lighter but honestly, I don't really notice the difference between them when shooting except that the .45 has a little more recoil.

If you have to choose between the two you should then consider what you need it for. For range shooting I prefer the 9mm because it has less recoil so I can shoot it faster. 9mm ammo is also much cheaper so I can afford to shoot it more.

For personal protection I would prefer the .45 (slightly) because it packs a little more stopping power.

I just graduated college myself a few months ago so I know what its like to be broke. I would recommend the XD-9 because its easier to shoot, and you can shoot it more on your budget.

  • 9mm = $7-$11/box of 50 rounds
  • .45ACP = $9-$15/box of 50 rounds

With a high quality hollow point self defense round the 9mm is also very effective for personal protection. Even though it is a little less powerful than the .45, you have sixteen shots before you need to reload, and that clip can go very fast if you practice with it.
Practice with your 9mm in your free time till you become an expert with it. Later when you have more money you can step up to a .45 or even larger caliber and the transition will be easy!!!

just my $.02

I've never shot a 9mm, so it's actually a step down from what I'm used to. Maybe I should have transitioned, as you say, up to .45, but that's what I bought the day I turned 21 and I never had a problem with it.

I have a SC9mm and a 4" .45 XD and yes there is a good bit of difference in the frames and feel. I like both, but prefer the SC and the full size 9/.40 XD over the .45 feel. The .45 is a full size weapon, nice, just bigger. After shooting 1911's all my life I thought I would expand my mine and try some other things. I like the SC best as it feels great and shoots great. The .45 will be shot some but I take one of my 1911's to the range everytime I go. I'm back to 1911's, but I do like my 9MM SC XD.

I have the XD9 in service and subcompact, and the XD40 and XD45 in service. The 45 feels a little bigger, but I can really only notice it when I switch quickly between the 9 and 45. I have been shooting the XD alot this year, the 9 is cheaper, but I feel that 45 is just more accurate. Right now the XD45 is my favorite pistol, and the one I have shot at the local matches for the last 4 months. I would take a serious look at the new 45 compact if I didn't already own a few XD's.

What about the actual length of the grip between the two? I've held an XD45, and that grip is pretty long (though I suppose it kind of has to be to have a capacity like that).

That's a tough question to answer. Being an owner of both calibers, I would prefer the .45, which I currently own. I will be getting the XD45 compact when I get back to NH. I can get it for $525. I know it is probably cheaper to shoot 9mm, but I reload so for me it is cheaper to shoot .45. Even with that said, I would take the .45 anyday.

A pictoral history of the two guns in question

If I can be forgiven for posting a link to another forum, I reviewed and compared these with pics. I also just picked up the compact .45

EDIT: crud, the photo essay on the comparisons (not the compact)review got eaten by the forum software.

Here are some comparison pics for you.
