Ok guys I'm wanting a carbine in 9mm to go along with my Springfield XD subcompact, but I have a few questions for those who may own one, first is, what do you have and or recommend I have looked at the HI-POINTS and for what they are I like them I know there are those who will say stay away from them but I like them if for nothing else than just a truck gun.

I would also be interested in an AR platform too, and what is the recoil like on any of them ?
The reason I ask this is because I have cancer and have a chemo port in the pocket of my right upper chest area where you would normally place the butt of the rifle you are shooting and I do not want to damage this in anyway. So what do you all suggest I look at ?

Any and all help is appreciated.
Thank you

I only sold my hipoint because my interests changed. Reliably reliable! What recoil?

I knew it wouldn't have much recoil but I also don't want to run the risk of damaging my chemo port so that's why I asked about it, and thanks for the response

I used to have a Hipoint in 9mm too. I'd say recoil is similar to an AR shooting 223/556. It's pretty minor. The 9mm is a milder round, but the higher reciprocating mass offsets any reduction in felt recoil.

A 9mm AR? I don't know, never shot one.

I wouldn't shoot anything heavier than a 22 on the side with the port. Even with that, I would not hold the rifle against the port or the catheter. It's unlikely to cause a problem, but the silicone catheter can crack and potentially enter your vascular system.

A 9mm AR recoils about the same as 5.56.

I shot mine well pitted against the bicep with the elbow in the short sling, you could shoot lefty too as with any other gun, but no I wouldn't put it right on the port. Wouldn't do that with any rifle personally...

That's what I'm thinking of trying to learn to do is shoot from the left side and that should be a fun day doing that....:)

Of course what ammo you load or by makes a difference, but an AR in 9MM has pretty low recoil. I load a 124/5 at 1050ish from a 5" barrel with a fast powder (N320) and it gains little to no velocity in the 16" AR. I have no idea what your port can handle. I'd be asking my Doc.

I have both, the AR has less felt recoil, and is more pleasant to shoot. My Hi-Point is a 1st generation. No complaints with it, but the AR is better in every way. Accuracy, capacity, and no cheek slap.

If I were you, I would seriously consider an 9mm AR pistol build. No shoulder impact, more accurate than you would expect, and when you are all better you can slap a new buffer tube and barrel (or tax stamp) on it and have a carbine. Less than $100 and no gas tube to worry about on the 9mm. Or just make a pistol with a 16" barrel now that I think of it.

I have some experience with the AR 9mm carbines from Colt and rock river. No recoil to speak of. Its like holding an M4 but firing a MP5, if that makes any sense. You should learn to fire from your non-ported side though. I wish you the best in your treatment. CANCER SUCKS!

There is very little recoil in my 9mm AR. I don't have any extensive experience that I recall with Hi-Point carbines but I know several people who have them and they think they are just the greatest things in the world and a lot of fun to shoot. I have a Hi-Point pistol in 45 ACP that's a blast. It's big and bulky and kind of ugly but just fun to shoot.

With a heavy buffer the recoil in a 9mm AR is pretty low... about the same or slightly less than 5.56 recoil.

As far as shooting with that port goes, lefty is definitely safer. If you must shoot right handed, consider getting one of those heavy duty recoil pads/shields that strap over your shoulder. This would spread any recoil out and avoid accidentally having all of it go on your port. I hope your treatments go well. Run this past your Dr too.

This is a great idea.

Take a look at THORDSEN CUSTOM AR Pistol Builders Kit and Enhanced Pistol Cheek Rest Kit W/CAA Saddle. There are some very good videos on youtube showing how comfortable and practical they are to use.

I had one of those chemo ports, but I had them put it on the left side.:) You will love the little scar that you end up with.
I have an AR-9 and have built two others, working on the fourth one right now. The price has dropped by almost $200 to build one.
You can get a nice upper from Delta Team Tactical for $160 Free shipping.

If you upgrade to a heavy buffer the recoil will be less. I used the Rock River 9mm buffer (about $25) in mine and recoil is very smooth.
The Hipoint 995 is heavy. Cancer treatments, as you know, make you very tired. I would go AR-9.

I currently have a keltec sub 2k in 9mm and have owned a CX4 Storm. You can grab a keltec for around $400 though the storm is better built in my opinion. The recoil is mild but I wouldn't take any chances putting it against the port. As mentioned, lefty would be a better route to go. Another alternative to the AR style pistol would be a CZ Scorpion, though I've never personally shot one.

I don't have any recoil from my Iver Johnson 9mm rifle
because I quit using it years ago
Some say they were ok--mine was junk
What a horrible thing to do to an M1 30cal carbine rifle--
convert it to a 9MM piece of junk

Thanks guys for all the replies they are appreciated very much, not sure which way I may go but will consider all suggestions made here.

As for the port it's in for a life time as I have to do some type of treatment for the rest of my life, I was originally diagnosed with stage four colon cancer that had spread to my liver.

I've had three surgeries two of which were liver resections, I took a break from treatment in August of 2015 and the cancer had returned and was very aggressive.

But by God's grace and Mercy I am still alive and kicking, my oncologist keeps telling me I should not be walking this earth.
Did not mean to stray off onto a long boring story about this so I'll again say thank you everyone for the replies and suggestions, I'll keep thinking about which way to go with this.

God bless and have a wonderful day
