James Yeager's latest .40 sucks video.

I stopped watching this guy a long time ago.
I think it was after the first 40 cal video he put out.

You have to wade through all the ego, trash talk, and other BS to finally get some info out of this guy.

I buy ammo at Walmart every payday at least -but then, I work there. ;)
Before the shortage, I was buying 3000rds a month from Walmart but had just found an online source that was competitive when the bottom fell out.

But do you only buy guns that you can feed from Walmart?

I shed all of my 40 caliber handguns several years ago. Then I was offered a Glock 23 at a price I could not refuse ( a family member deal). Last year a Sig P229 came my way rather cheaply and I'm back into 40....at least a little. Then I got a Sig 357 barrel for the P229... now another "dying" round to stock. Ammo prices have dropped lately and 40 is at most only $2 more than 9. Buy in bulk and don't give it another thought.

I never thought this thread would go this far.

Only reason I have any 40s is that I have been able to get the guns cheap and the ammo cheap.

Supposedly, he's actually an OK trainer and cool in person. But yeah, his theatrics are getting old. Really old. Sometimes trainers tell you, or the industry, what you, or the industry, wants to hear. Right now, "9mm all the things" is what people want to hear.

Money talks and BS walks. Those theatrics pay his bills.

.40 is still a good reliable round. Doesn't blow up Glocks unless you're a chump. Cycles more reliably than 9mm or .45. Great for silencers. Great for USPSA. Great for 3gun, when 9mm isn't dropping the "9mm calibrated" steel targets. More powerful than 9mm, even if you believe it's only equal in effectiveness.

.40 ain't going anywhere. When people get tired of weak cycling from weakly loaded cheap 9mm ammo, BTF, or as soon as 9mm fails to stop a wacko wearing a garbage can, it'll get popular again.

.40 became popular because the police were using it because it had more power, and was still high capacity. Now that they've all but dropped it, and it's been a fun to bash caliber, less shooters are trying it. It wasn't popular for very long at all. So how much demand is expected? It was never .45 kind of popular.

And newbs like cheap and easy. 9mm is cheaper and easier than .40 and .357sig.

the 40 s&w will be here for as long as "run and gun" competitions have a major/minor classification. it and the 38 super are the only commercial cartridges (as far as i know) that will make major and that can be chambered in a small framed gun.

as soon as the major/minor classification goes, the 40 s&w goes. it's not a nato cartridge, leo is dropping it for the 9mm, the fbi is dropping it for the 9mm. nothing else is keeping it alive as a popular pistol round, imo.

Mr. Yeager is a master of self-promotion and controversial gun-forum flapdoodle.
Yep a youtube legend o_O , why don't folks just shoot and carry what they like instead of being influenced by guys like Yeager and the rest of the youtube self proclaimed experts,

If anyone has a favorable opinion of this guy I have not heard it, but he gets a lot of Youtube air time. To be successful you must be noticed. He gets that.

Not intentionally, but currently, every gun I own, minus BP (our store doesn't carry it) has ammo available at Walmart.

From the standpoint of an engineer, listening to Yeager-meister talk about operating pressures just makes me think:

From the standpoint of a gunguy: If the .410, 28ga, 16ga, and 10ga all still have homes, and the 6.5x55 swede, 7mm mauser, 338 Federal, .327federal, 32 H&R, 17 HM2, 22WMR, 32acp, 25acp, 10mm, 5.7x28, .480Ruger, and a hundred or more other cartridges all have homes, then the 40 S&W is still going to have a home long after any of us, or our kids are dead and gone.

Is the 40 going to hold a spot among LE agencies long term? Eh, probably just as well or better than 45acp has...

I never jumped on the .40 bandwagon. I stuck with my 9mm and 38 special from the begining. I like other cartridges just never got interested in the .40.

Know what also sucks? Making threats about killing people online and getting your license to carry temporarily suspended. Looking your way you loud mouthed yahoo. Too bad it was a temporary suspension and not permanent.
http://www.guns.com/2013/01/12/james-yeager-carry-permit-suspended/

My opinions on him and his thoughts. He is an idiot. And his opinions are idiotic. This is the same man that thinks the perfect firearm ever created is a Glock 19. No other firearms should exist including rifles and crew served for military use. Anything can be done with a Glock 19...according to him. So do I believe this same loud mouth when he says .40S&W is going to die? Not a chance.

It's pretty difficult to escape the practicality of the 9mm.
Yes, Georg Johann Luger crossed a diamond with a pearl when he invented that cartridge.

I'd always assumed the 9mm luger was some kind of careful "optimization" to get nearly the same muzzle energy as .45ACP with 1/2 the bullet mass in a shorter OAL package. But according the the History of the Gun series on the History Channel, the German army wanted bigger than .30 caliber so he simply removed the neck and fit in the largest bullet he could in the 7.63 Mauser case to win the contract.

Apparently he also built a few Luger pistols in .45ACP for the US trials but withdrew when he won the German contract, surviving examples are true "million dollar guns".

I never was a 40 fan, but they were manufactured in enough quantity that they are going to be around for a while.

And now is a great time to swoop in, and get great deals. I'm seeing a lot of used 40 at the pawn shops and gun stores.
Ammo prices are dropping. Opportunity knocks.

The .38 Super is the same length as .45 Auto, and is therefore longer than .40S&W and requires a larger framed gun like a 1911, G20, G21, P220, etc., while the .40S&W can fit in guns designed for the 9mm.

The .357 SIG will fit in 9mm sized guns, but I don't know enough about competition rules to know if .357 SIG makes major.

I'm not a James Yeager fan boy, and I don't share his opinions on a lot of things...I believe he had a anti 1911 rant that did me in awhile back. Anyways I know OF him through a few other guys that run contract instructions for snipers. I hope everyone knows he's not just a dude that rants on youtube. He does run a school (link below.) Now with that said, im also not a fan of his....schooling...then again, I'm not easily impressed by most schools...especially NRA classes.

All and all i'm not a fan of the .40 cal. It doesnt offer anything that .45 or a 9mm wont offer, .40 cal has a snappy recoil, higher pressures...whatever...a .45 is nice and straight back, and same bullet designs..fmj will have about 13% more momentum then a .40. It all depends on what bullets are used. All things the same, a .45 will have more kinetic energy. Kinetic energy will kill.

I like 40 and 45.
These are chrono averages from my pistols:
Glock 23:
Remington Golden Saber 165 gr. @ 1,048 fps / 402# KE
Federal HST 180 gr. @ 1003 fps / 402# KE
Winchester Ranger T 165 @ 1,146 fps / 481# KE
Glock 30SF
Federal Hydra-Shok 230 gr. @ 811 fps / 336# KE
Winchester Ranger T 230 gr. @ 903 fps /417# KE
Remington Golden Saber 185 +P @ 1,008 fps / 418# KE
The 23 has a slightly longer barrel, but only about 1/4 inch, so it's fairly close.
180 gr. @ 1003 fps = .80 momentum
230 gr. @ 903 fps = .92 momentum
45 acp having 13% more momentum is right on in this example.
However, even with 45 +P the difference in KE is not much.
